ROSA Mobile: A mobile Operating System based on Rosa Linux

It is no secret to anyone that free and open source software (SL/CA) is a way to develop more and better software for everyone, in a safe, reliable, accessible and even free way. But, that it is also a viable alternative used by many people, groups, communities, organizations, companies and even governments (countries) to achieve the long-awaited technological independence. Both for themselves and their members, users or citizens.

And in these turbulent times, geopolitically speaking, where the world is on the way to being divided into blocs, it is logical that certain countries accelerate the use of the SL / CA to improve and protect their infrastructures and services provided. For this reason, in past opportunities we have seen and addressed, for example, China y Russia, in the midst of blockades and sanctions, in technological matters they have been developing slowly, but at solid steps, the development of national operating systems, desktop and mobiles. Therefore, today we will talk about one more initiative from Russia called «PINK Mobile».

What is known so far about Rosa Mobile?

According to recent official announcement known about the current «PINK Mobile» the following is known about it:

1. The official launch of the first version of this future and new mobile operating system based on Rosa Linux (GNU/Linux Distribution from the same company) is scheduled for the end of August 2023.
2. Its developer, the company STC IT ROSA, which is part of the Rutek holding (of Russian origin), hopes that this mobile operating system will be able to run on a wide range of smartphones and tablets. Very similar to Harmony, the Chinese mobile OS.
   
3. Its official development was completed recently, as stated in the legal and commercial system of Russian legislation (Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation: Number 16453).
4. It will be available in two versions: One for government clients and another for corporate clients with higher security and private requirements. And furthermore, it is expected thatThe first devices delivered with it are mobile equipment manufactured by the company Rutek JSC.
5. Against this project presents as difficulties or limitations the lack of access to documentation and support for suppliers of electronic components due to sanctions. Although, this is relatively normal in the field of free software and open source. That is, the lack of documentation and support when it comes to making free and open equivalents of drivers, firmware and applications, from and for proprietary, closed and commercial hardware.

Is Rosa Mobile related to Android?

Finally, and something important to note is that, as ROSA Mobile is built on the basis of its own ROSA 2021.1 repository from STC IT ROSA. Which allows its architecture does not require the use of closed Android OS components to implement hardware and software interaction between Linux kernel drivers and OS services. Therefore, with ROSA Mobile you can reach a new level of security on the mobile devices that use it.
