Piper, an excellent utility to configure gaming mouse

During my search for some utility or configuration that could help me see the battery level of my devices Bluetooth connected to my computer and more specifically with my keyboard and mouse, to be able to be aware of when it was necessary to replace the rechargeable batteries that I use in them with another pair already charged, I found a utility that caught my attentionwell this destined to help the user to the configuration of mouse gamer, inside Linux.

As such, some years ago I had a gaming mouse that they gave me by Rapidshare (in its golden age) which I found very attractive since it had several action keys as well as a weight control, since I could add or remove small weights, as well as sliding speed, between other things.

The reason I make mention of it is that those action keys could only be set within games, as additional keys and as such there was no software that allowed me to control actions or even configure it. That is why the utility of the one I mentioned that I found caught my attention.

The utility of which I speak has as name "Piper", which is basically a graphical user interface that is intended to support the user for that this can configure mouse actions pFor games, but more specifically for gaming mice.

Piper is simply a graphical interface to ratbagd's DBus daemon, so it requires ratbagd from libratbag, installed and running within the system.

Piper offers us some configuration options, within which we can find the change resolution (DPI) mouse, set LED colors (if the mouse has them) and above all the main functionl which is the power set the behavior of the mouse buttons.

In addition to it Piper has the support for profiles, with which the user can create different profiles and establish different actions for the buttons (a very useful option for gamers and even for working with different programs).

Something to take into account is that not all mice are supported, so this part of the support is in development since it depends entirely on libratbag.

How to install Piper on Linux?

For the part of the installation of this utility, we can do it in two different ways, the first of them and the simplest is with the help of Flatpak packages, as it is a more universal method.

To be able to install by Flatpak, It is necessary that they have the support for this type of packages added to your distro, (as such Flatpak is supported by many Linux distros and some of them already have added support)

Now we simply have to open a terminal in the system and in it we are going to type the following command:

flatpak install flathub org.freedesktop.Piper

Once the installation is done, you will be able to configure your mouse. Just look for the utility in your application menu. If you can't find it, you can run it from the terminal by typing:

flatpak run org.freedesktop.Piper

The other way is to install the package that is available for the following distributions.

Who are they for Ubuntu, Linux Mint and any Ubuntu derivative users, they can add the following repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libratbag-piper/piper-libratbag-git -y
sudo apt-get update

And they install with:

sudo apt install piper

While for those who are Fedora users or any derivative of it, you can install it with the following command:

sudo dnf install piper

Those who use Arch Linux, Manjaro, Arco Linux or any other derivative distro For Arch Linux, you can install directly from the Arch Linux repositories:

sudo pacman -S piper

Finally for those who use any version of OpenSUSE, they can install the utility with the following command:

sudo zypper install piper
