Plasma 5.1.2 available are you ready to use it?

The KDE development team does not rest even at Christmas and has been released version 5.1.2 of plasma 5 fixing a lot of bugs, which we will see next.

plasma 5

What's new in Plasma 5?

Some of its corrections have been:

  • The size of the words in Baloo's indexing is limited.
  • Points are no longer indexed in Baloo, because it is a regular expression symbol.
  • The Breeze icons license finally becomes LGPL 3+.
  • The remaining battery time in PowerDevil now updates correctly.
  • The free space notifier icon is correctly hidden when space is available again.
  • Breeze: It receives corrections in the margins and some buttons, among other things.
  • The Notes Widget now displays white text on black themes.
  • The Clock Widget fixes visual problems.
  • Plasma Desktop: Validate the names of the time zones before configuring them, among other corrections.
  • Plasma Workspace: The shutdown button on the lock screen is removed.
  • Other bugs have been fixed 😉

As you can see, little by little, improvements are being added, errors are being corrected and some users have even started using Plasma 5 in some distributions. Recall that Kubuntu makes available to everyone an iso with this new Desktop Environment, KaOS as well and in ArchLinux we can install it via repositories. That is why I ask myself the question, is it worth using Plasma 5?

Is Plasma 5 already worth using?

If we have an extra computer or we simply want to live on the edge, of course it is worth it. For example, I am one of those users who does not resist trying new things, but (and yes, there is almost always a but), personally I still think I'm going to wait a bit.

The current state of KDE 4.14.3 offers me the necessary stability and security, so jumping to Plasma 5 right now I don't think is an option for me. Anyway, what catches my attention the most about this new version is the visual part, and I have almost solved that. In DesdeLinux I showed them how install Breeze on KDE 4.X both in ArchLinux as in Kubuntu, and at least I loved the result. So if you ask me, my recommendation is that you wait at least until April or May to fully switch to Plasma 5.

So as the saying goes: War warned does not kill a soldier!

Well, the truth does not seem so unstable to me.
    : )

I could not stand it and installed it 3 days ago ..

The truth is that it is quite unstable and I regret it a bit. plasmashell crashes every 2 hours or so, randomly, when I minimize or open any application.

I already had to change kwin to openbox, because when opening many windows, kwin went completely crazy and crashed 6 or 7 times in a row (Plasma himself suggested me to switch to openbox with a nice little window)

I lost the icons in the systray of 2 GTK applications that I was using (megasync and nicotine +)
I lost some plasmoids for the desktop that I liked, the one with the photo frame. and the system monitor.

But it is very beautiful, so it compensates in part 🙂

An installation in Virtual Box can solve the problem, as long as my VB File does not show it I will continue with KDE4.14 also I think that KDE Connect is not ported yet

      If it is ported

Well, if they lightened KDE a bit more, I immediately migrate to KDE 5.

you know… I really love KDE, I hate the KDE ecosystem, but I can't live without QT, that's my life 😀

        You can use LXQT 🙂

I still see bugs in KDE 4.14.3 (openSUSE 13.1). Some did not have them before.

It's not just about plasma, KDE 4 applications are not fully supported.
February seems to me to be an important date for KDE, before that it would be to try to see the design changes only.

At the moment, I am comfortable in Elementary, although KDE 5 (or Plasma) tempted me two days ago. I downloaded a Kubuntu with KDE 5 and there was no way for it to start.

I am thinking of migrating to Arch.

    1.    Koprotk said

It is the best rolling release option in my opinion.

I would go for Manjaro if you can wait 1 week extra than Arch, in exchange for a lot of stability

It makes me want to, but it's better to wait a bit ...

The interfaces? not to mention equally horrible

Hey guys, the first graduate has already appeared in almost everything and axiomatically ruled that GUIs are "just as horrible"

I have been using Openbox for 2 years without more. And I admit that I never used KDE.

I just installed Plasma on Arch, let's see how it goes. 😉

I will comment on how I am doing. 'So far so good'.

To be my first contact, after several touch-ups, I was happy. First I thought of directly changing the wm to openbox, which I did, to have all my usual configs directly at hand. Then I gave kwin a try, and tweaking its configuration, I left it at ease.

While I know it is still in development, the environment itself is stable and really usable. Few are the bugs that really bother me, and as I find them I report them. On the other hand, if there are functionalities that it still lacks, compared to kde4, having never used it I don't know: Q.

As I said, so far so good, I am using it as my main environment, and for the moment I am really happy, the experience is good and it lets itself be configured to the minimum. Then I leave a screenshot for the forum. Regards.

First of all, sorry for the Off Topic. But I know that many of those who write in this excellent Blog live in Cuba, after yesterday's announcements, I hope that they will finally begin a path that has been denied them ... and above all, that the Network of PAIR BY PAIR. Greetings and again sorry for the Off Topic.

I had KDE 4 and "KDE 5" together using the PPA on Kubuntu 14.04, but out of nowhere they removed it 🙁. I don't want to make the leap if KDE4 is perfect.

Is there a distro that comes from the factory ... something like "unstable medium stable"

You state Plasma 5.1.2, but the page to which you direct the link is the 5.1.1.

I don't know if the same bug happens to someone, but I tried Plasma 5 Project Neon installed from Synaptic on my Mint 17 and every time I minimized a window or logout, a "shaking" or strange flickering of the graphical environment started.

I'll test later when Plasma 5.2 or 5.3 comes out

  18.   Ignacio said

Sounds good, I'm on Linux Mint 17, does anyone know how to install it? : - /

I tried the neon / kf5 repository, but it seems that repository died!

    Greetings.

A question. I use Linux Mint Quiana with Xfce because my computer is low on resources. Would it be worth moving to KDE? Would it be better to stay where I am? Basically I have no problem so far except that from time to time I feel like throwing this thing away because of its limited resources. Of course, then I remember that I have no money to improve it or to buy a new one ...

    1.    Luigys toro said

I would recommend based on the resources of your pc, that you stick to xfce.
