PlayOnLinux or how to play your favorite Windows games on Linux

PlayOnLinux is a tool that allows you to install and run many of the games and applications originally designed for Windows. As we all know, at the moment few popular games designed to run under Linux and, definitely, this is one of the factors that discourages many users from overdoing to Linux. PlayOnLinux brings to the palm of our hand a solution to this problem, without cost of any kind and through the use of free software.

PlayOnLinux main features

  • You do not need to have a copy or license of Windows to use PlayOnLinux.
  • PlayOnLinux is completely based on Wine, so all its features and benefits are shared, although it keeps the common user well away from any complicated configuration.
  • PlayOnLinux is free software
  • PlayOnLinux is developed in Bash and Python

It also has some flaws, like all software:

  • Occasionally, you will experience slowdowns in performance (the image may be less fluid and the graphics less detailed)
  • It does not support ALL games, although it does support a large number of them.

Installation

Fortunately, PlayOnLinux has installers for almost all distros. Those who don't use Ubuntu can find the installation instructions here:

http://www.playonlinux.com/es/download.html

Ubuntu users can install the corresponding DEB package or add the PlayOnLinux repositories:

Package: @ http://www.playonlinux.com/script_files/PlayOnLinux/3.7.7/PlayOnLinux_3.7.7.deb

To add the repositories, I opened a terminal and typed the following:

sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_lucid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install playonlinux

Use

When you start PlayOnLinux for the first time, you will see that the main screen of the program will appear somewhat empty. This happens because most of the space is reserved to list the applications and games that you are installing.

To install an application / game, click the Install button.

The installer dialog will appear. From there you will be able to select the application / game to install, either by browsing the categories on the left or by searching for it through the search engine located at the top of the window.

Once you have located the game / application you want to install, select it and click the button Apply.

The installer of the game. Unless you are installing a patch for a previously installed application, most installers will start with a "presentation." Then, the directory in which PlayOnLinux will save all the files of the program in question will be created.

After this point, several things can happen: the installer can start the discharge of the game, may require the game installation files, may require the Game CD / ISO, etc., depending on what was set in the game installation script. Some examples are included in the screenshots that follow:

At some point, PlayOnLinux will run the application / game's native Windows installer. Something important to keep in mind is that, sometimes, the PlayOnLinux installation scripts need to modify the installation once it has finished, so it is highly recommended to install in the routes that are established by default, and using the configurations that come default. Once the installer completes its work, PlayOnLinux will display a final dialog to determine where to create the shortcuts of the game.

After the installation is complete, you will see the main PlayOnLinux window again and the game / application in question should have been added to the list of available programs. For run the program just installed, just select it and click the button Run. You can also double-click on the program, or run it from the shortcut created by the installer.

Finally, the love with all the games fades and the tragic moment of its uninstall. To do this, select it from the list and click the button Remove. Keep in mind that, although all files and settings saved in the Registry will be completely erased, all program shortcuts may not be erased properly. Anyway ... it will have to be done "by hand".

do you accept cracks and patches for the games?
and how can I apply them?

  4.   Let's use Linux said

Of course. The mechanism is the same as always. Find the directory where the game was installed and copy the crack. Or run the game, run the keygen and enter the key, etc.
    That easy. Cheers! Paul.
ps: a hint, surely the games are saved in your HOME / .wine folder

  5.   Daniel said

    Oh, thank you
then I see that it is like installing them in windows
    and another question
When the game to install it asks me to have the directx installed ???

  6.   Let's use Linux said

In general, the game itself installs it (the directx you need to play it). Otherwise, download it separately from its official page, install it and then try to install the game. That easy.
    Cheers! Paul.

Notice. Install the DEB package and find the game in the list. If it appears, you can but not. However, the fact that it does not appear in the PlayOnLinux list does not mean that it cannot be run using Wine, but rather that there is no game installation script under PlayOnLinux. So, in case it doesn't appear, try installing it directly from Wine.
    Cheers! Paul.

I've been using it for a while now, and it promises 😉
The tutorial images are old stockings, they are from some previous versions already.
If there is no installation script for a game or application, you can download the ones that are being tested by the community in the PlayOn Linux forums.

    Greetings.

It asks me for the cd-rom and then it doesn't download as I do

      1.    let's use linux said

Clear. You have to mount the cd in a folder on your hard disk (it is a procedure similar to the "virtual disk" that you probably used in Windows). Otherwise, you have to put the CD. 🙂
To mount an ISO in a folder, you have to use the command:

        sudo mount -o loop disco.iso / media / iso

Obviously, you have to change disk.iso and / media / iso for what corresponds in your case.

        Cheers! Paul.

Hello, I have a problem with PlayOnLinux, a few weeks ago I had problems because the office was closing unexpectedly so I decided to remove the PalyOnLinux office, now every time I start my UBUNTU, it appears that the application cannot be loaded and it shows me one for one the MicrosoftOFFICE packages. I already manually uninstalled all the MicrosoftOffice folders that were in the PLAYONLINUX, I deleted some execution entries in the PLAY folder where they named me the OFFICE execution, I completely uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it remains the same ... any ideas?

Hello, very well explained the post ... Still, it is not very technical to say ... What if we use a netbook? How can I play a game that requires multiple CDs without them? The question is why at the time of playing the pendrive where I burned the game CDs does not recognize me ... Sure, I have a netbook ... I have searched in different forums but ...

    thanks in advance, diplomat

  14.   Let's use Linux said

Hi Guille! What a solemnity !!
If I understood your question correctly, you want to know how to play games that, as you play them, ask you to insert new discs. I honestly don't have PlayOnLinux installed. It has been a long time since I wrote the article. However, my first reaction would be to try to mount the ISO of that disc when the game needs it. I imagine that in the PlayOnLinux or Wine settings there should be an option to specify that it read that path as if it were the CD / DVD. Anyway, it would be logical ... but, once again, I do not have the program installed to corroborate it.
If you make any progress or come to a solution to the problem, I will appreciate it if you share it with all of us.
    A hug! Paul.

why does it appear to me that you need a cd rom

    1.    Amaranta Rosnovsky said

Friend, up there are some options (when you are looking for the game) and there you have to click on "it is not necessary to use CD" and also on "it is a test program" you will get some signs, you accept them and it you choose: 3

    2.    cristian said

because you should have put it "IN TESTS" you have to put it in "NO CD NEEDED" the game you have mounted needs the CD OR cdrom to be able to install it

  19.   Amaranta Rosnovsky said

Hey, you don't know how you can reinstall the game without having to download it again? (in my case, League of legends)
