Plugins that your Rhythmbox cannot miss

Not many know but Rhythmbox, the music player that is installed by default in many GNOME-based distributions, has the ability to add extra functions through plugins.

Some of these plugins are available in the official repositories of the distributions. For example, in the case of Ubuntu, it is possible to install the package rhythmbox-plugins, which includes several plugins:

  • cover art search
  • Last.fm
  • Context Panel
  • DAAP Music Sharing
  • FM Radio
  • IM Status
  • Internet Radio
  • Song lyrics
  • Notification
  • PythonConsole
  • LIRC
  • send tracks
  • Replay Gains
  • MediaServer2 D-Bus interface
  • MPRIS D-Bus interface

However, fossfreedom, a user in the AskUbuntu community, has decided to collect a huge number of third-party plugins that greatly expand and enhance the variety of plugins available for Rhythmbox. Thus, although the player is quite complete, these plugins allow us to optimize and expand its functionalities, taking it to another level.

Depending on the version of Ubuntu (and therefore the version of Rhythmbox) that you use, some of the plugins mentioned below may not be available for you.

Installation

1.- Open a terminal and enter the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: fossfreedom / rhythmbox-plugins sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-complete

2.- Then you have to open Rhythmbox, go to the menu Accessories and activate plugins as needed.

3.- It is also possible to install the plugins selectively. Here is a brief explanation of the most interesting ones:

  • Equalizer: 10-band equalizer.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-equalizer
  • microblogger: publish the song you are listening to on identi.ca or Twitter.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-microblogger
  • CoverArt Search Providers- Replacement of the official plugin to search for album covers.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-coverartsearch
  • Remember-the-Rhythm: remember the last song played before closing the program.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-remembertherhythm
  • Tray icon- Add a notification icon from which you can control Rhythmbox. This can be useful for desktop environments that do not have a menu to control audio playback.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-tray-icon
  • JumpToWindow: allows you to add a functionality similar to the "Jump to file" that is included in Winamp, thanks to which it is possible to add a song to the playback queue.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-jumptowindow
  • lLyrics: alternative plugin to get the lyrics of the songs.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics
  • Countdown Playlist: Create playlists based on a keyword.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-countdown-playlist
  • Random Album Player: play albums randomly.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-randomalbumplayer
  • Cover Art Browser- Browse and play music through a catalog of album art, similar to the one used by Banshee.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-coverart-browser
  • lastfm-queue- Automatically add songs to the play queue based on suggestions obtained from last.fm.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-lastfm-queue
  • Open Containing Folder: Add an option to open the folder containing the selected song.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-opencontainingfolder
  • Radio Browser: allows you to search, play and record online radios.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-radio-browser
  • Repeat One Song: Repeat playback of a song.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-repeat-one-song
  • Send-First: Add the selected songs to the beginning of the playlist instead of the end.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-send-first
  • Small-Window: shrinks the Rhythmbox interface, turning it into a very small screen containing only the basic commands: play / pause, previous / next.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-smallwindow
  • Stop After Current Track: Stop playback at the end of the current song.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-stopafter
  • Suspend PC: Suspend the computer after Rhythmbox has finished playing all songs.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-suspend
  • Website Menu: Search for a song on Youtube, Wikipedia, AllMusic, RateYourMusic, AllAboutJazz, DiscoGS, Last.fm, Grooveshark, Facebook, Amazon. It also allows you to find information about the artist in Wikipedia, AllMusic, RateYourMusic, DiscoGS, Last.fm, Facebook, Myspace, Torrentz.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-webmenu
  • Fullscreen: Maximizes the Rhythmbox window to fill the entire screen.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-fullscreen
  • Rating filters- Add filters based on the ratings given to songs.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-rating-filter
  • Art Display: View album covers.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-artdisplay
  • close on hide: Closes Rhythmbox (does not minimize it) when the (x) button is clicked.

    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-fileorganizer
  • Hide: Allow Rhythmbox to start hidden or minimized.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-hide
  • Looper: allows you to infinitely repeat a portion of a song.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-looper
  • Parametric EQ: a parametric equalizer with up to 64 bands.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-parametriceq
  • Playlists import / export: allows you to export all your playlists. Ideal to synchronize your lists between several computers or to make a backup of them.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-playlist-import-export
  • Rhythm Website: allows you to control Rhythmbox from any web device, be it your IPod, Android, Windows etc.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-rhythmweb
  • Screen saver: pause playback when GNOME screensaver is activated.
    sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-screensaver

Hope someone designs a new plugin for Jamendo, because they discontinued it and it was useful 🙁

How can you put a skin on the Rhythmbox

  3.   Monica Aguilar said

Rhythmbox doesn't support skins, but it does change their appearance every time you change your GTK or Metacity theme.

It worked for me before, but in Ubuntu 11.10 it doesn't add the plugins to the list, at least not the lastfmqueue which is the one I use. And that I have put it in both folders to test ...

Which ones don't work? I tried them again and found none broken.
Could it be that you are using a version of Ubuntu that is not compatible with the PPA?

All of this is provided by Clementine by default (including the amazing Nyanalyzer Cat). 😀

Precisely for that. I love the concept of plugins or extensions for applications. Because they make the software much more flexible and adaptable to each user. In this way you can choose, and you only add the functionalities that you want and use, not a lot of them that come by default, that you will never use and that only serve to make the program much heavier.

      1.    mario said

heavy clementine? it's the old amarok 1 maintained ... I don't think a show from a decade ago is heavier than the current ones, it's usually the other way around.

      2.    paul honorato said

I agree in part, Clementine brings many options that I do not even use, such as the options of Last.fm or other online radios. But from there to saying that it is heavy, there is a long way. Clementine is astonishingly light and does its job perfectly, with a neat interface and does not pretend to be another player.

      3.    Devil's lawyer said

Let's see if you understand me well. I'm not saying Clementine is heavy. I mean that the plugins that you do not use and come by default, only serve so that the program, (whatever, I am not specifically referring to Clementine), occupies more megabytes of disk space, and consumes more when loading those plugins that they are not worth anything to you.

What if you don't use them? What do you want them for? It is much better that you have the option to choose, and to load, only and specifically, the plugins that you do use. And this is much more important, if you have an old PC with little RAM or processor; because in those cases, every kb of consumption that you can save, becomes real gold.

I am looking for a player or plugin to play the audio of YouTube videos as if it were an online radio

    it's possible?

    1.    let's use linux said

In principle, it is possible. What's more, I don't want to disappoint you but I think there are already programs that do that ...

      1.    syous said

it would be interesting to know what they are xDDD

Does anyone know how to migrate all the information in the music library from banshee to rhythmbox?
More than 80Gb of music stored and I don't want to lose information such as number of reproduction, punctuation and my list of reproductions. Banshee is getting heavy on me. Please, any response or indication is very much appreciated.

You probably forgot to run "sudo apt-get update" before sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-equalizer.

        Cheers! Paul.
