Possible problems with the blog

Hello everyone. I feel obliged to inform you that it is possible that from today you will experience certain anomalies in the functioning of the blog and then I will explain to you what all this is due to.

In the last few days we have been experiencing a series of drops as apparently we are receiving too much traffic. I've already hired Russian hackers to find out about it. 🙂

We were guided by the statistics of JetPack, where the highest number of visits the blog has received was yesterday: 12 098. But we were deceived, there are many more. Consulting the traffic with another plugin, we realize that in reality yesterday they were not 12 098But 17 702. 😮

One of the measures we have taken is to install a cache plugin to WordPress. It is possible that some have noticed a certain speed improvement when accessing the articles and it is precisely due to that, since this plugin serves requests faster (now it is not the case to explain how it does it).

The problem is that on the one hand it helps us, but on the other it affects us. When the plugin caches an article with its images, this can affect what you see for a time of 10 minutes, since this is the time we set to refresh the cache. Among the symptoms of the problem we find:

  • The number of times the post has been read is not updated.
  • The number of comments is not updated.
  • Another logo may appear in the sidebar, saying that for example you use Windows.

These are some of the problems we have detected.

We have configured the plugin to only cache when you are not a registered user. We deactivate this option for Authors, Editors and Administrators so that the posts are displayed correctly. There are many more things to consider, but the one who made the adjustments was KZKG ^ Gaara and right now he is Kilometers away from Internet access, therefore many more unpleasant things could happen.

It would be good if they gave us feedback on the anomalies they can detect. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

At the moment, this page loaded faster than normal, so it seems that, at least for those of us who suffer from "narrow band", the solution has been favorable. As for the rest of the details, without any problem, correctly identify the distro, load the images without problem (or these were ALREADY in my cache), etc. In case I detect something, I will inform you.

I'm glad to know that .. You will tell us later 😉

My old website ran on a low-resource server, used wordpress, and it was for headaches. I started developing a lightweight alternative to wordpress. It was based on html pages, and asynchronous javascript, no php. That they were updated when events happened, such as a new post published or a new comment received. Just serving html files is quite light. Unlike wordpress that is always consulting the database. I tried the cache plugin, but it didn't lighten almost anything.
So, when a new post or comment was published, all the data was sent through a post request to a file, let's call it process.php. There it was analyzed and if it met the quality requirements. It was updated, either the new comment was added in the corresponding html page or a new page was created by modifying the cover. It lacked a bit, to be stable. But surely someone has developed something similar. WordPress is increasingly commercial. Demanding more resources, thus benefiting hosting companies that offer increasingly heavy plans.

Lately there have been no problems with the network, apart from commenting from my Sony Ericsson W200 with Opera Mini 4, and when commenting from my PC with Iceweasel, it always appears when commenting that I use Linux From Scratch (since "GNU/ Linux"), but in the part of "To enter DesdeLinux, you use...", it correctly recognizes that I use Debian.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Let's see if Debian recognizes me as an operating system through Iceweasel when commenting.

They can use AJAX to request that information that should not be cached, I had a similar problem with Varnish and the solution was to use AJAX. a greeting

Well, it was time to use cache, the side effects are gone, and I even dare to say that showing the system used to access it, I will not miss it much, the important thing is the content of the blog.

Is this another post where you test your comments?

    1.    eliotime3000 said

It could be, but unfortunately, the operating system detection system through the user-agent would have to be refined a little more, and what I don't understand when commenting, it seems to me that I use Iceweasel, but as for the operating system, I It appears that I have Linux From Scratch (LFS) when I actually use Debian (except in the part "To access DesdeLinux, you use..." it detects that I use Debian).

As soon as I enter the page through the Chromium Nightly that I use in Windows, it always tells me that I use Google Chrome with the version of Chromium Nightly (the problem was the User Agent, which instead of saying Chromium tells me Chrome. what appears to me that I use a version of Chrome that seems to come from the future).

Has it ever crossed your mind that they could have used Drupal instead of WordPress? Because in WordPress, its main flaw is a lack of stability when receiving a horde of visits, but I do not know if you. They have experience when using it and being able to migrate their content to this CMS (it looks more like CMF than CMS due to its ease of management when using Drupal Shell).

Anyway, it seems to me that the site has improved a lot when loading, but I would suggest the use of Drupal, since its design is much more modular than WordPress and its level of customization is much better than that of WordPress.

    1.    elav said

Drupal? No way let's go. Not only is it bigger and heavier than WordPress, but we would also be under-utilizing it.

I do not share that WordPress is unstable, because WordPress.com shows you just the opposite. And another thing, although I have not really seen how it is designed in Drupal, with WordPress making a theme does not take you more than 2 hours .. believe me. It couldn't be easier.
