Proxmox Backup Server, a new product for backup and recovery of virtual environments

Proxmox, known for its Proxmox Virtual Environment and Proxmox Mail Gateway products, has released the first version of the Proxmox Backup Server distribution. The new distribution is presented as a ready-to-use solution for backup and recovery of virtual environments, containers and server padding.

Proxmox Backup Server is enterprise-class client-server backup software that supports virtual machines, containers, and physical hosts. It is specially optimized for the Proxmox Virtual Environment platform and allows you to safely backup and replicate data.

Provides easy management with a command line and a web-based user interface and is licensed under the GNU Affero v3 General Public License (GNU AGPL, v3).

Proxmox Backup Server supports incremental backups, data deduplication, compression, and authenticated encryption.

Using Rust as implementation language guarantees high performance, low resource usage and a high-quality, secure code base. It has strong encryption done on the client side. Therefore, it is possible to back up the data to targets that are not completely reliable.

The part of the distribution system It is based on the base of the Debian 10.6 (Buster) package, the Linux kernel 5.4 and OpenZFS 0.8.4.

The system is designed on the basis of a client-server architecture: Proxmox Backup Server can be used both to work with local backups and a centralized server to backup data from different hosts. Provides fast granular recovery and data synchronization modes between servers.

Proxmox Backup Server supports integration with Proxmox VE platform for backing up virtual machines and containers. The management of backups and data recovery is done through the web interface.

Of the main characteristics that stand out are:

  • Proxmox VE support: Proxmox virtual environment is fully supported and can back up virtual machines (which support QEMU dirty bitmaps) and containers.
  • Performance: The entire software stack is written in Rust, to provide high speed and memory efficiency.
  • Deduplication: Regular backups produce large amounts of duplicate data. The deduplication layer avoids redundancy and minimizes used storage space.
  • Incremental backups: Changes between backups are usually low. Reading and sending only the delta reduces the impact of backups on storage and network.
  • Data integrity: The built-in SHA-256 checksum algorithm ensures the accuracy and consistency of your backups.
  • Remote Synchronization: Data can be efficiently synchronized with remote sites. Only deltas that contain new data are transferred.
  • Compression: Zstandard ultra-fast compression is capable of compressing several gigabytes of data per second.
  • Encryption backups can be encrypted on the client side using AES-256 in Galois / Counter mode. This authenticated encryption mode provides very high performance on modern hardware.
  • Web interface: Manage Proxmox backups with the integrated web-based user interface.
  • Open Source: Proxmox Backup Server is free and open source software. The source code is licensed AGPL, v3.

Download

The project is developed and maintained by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH.

An ISO installation image is available for free download. Specific distribution components are open under the AGPLv3 license. For installing updates, both a paid enterprise repository and two free repositories are available, differing in the level of update stabilization.

Finally, for those who are interested in being able to test the product, you can get the system images from the official Proxmox website.

The files can be downloaded from this link.

The installation media (CD or USB) is a full operating system. It can be fully installed on dedicated hardware or in a virtual machine on all virtualization platforms, plus it can also be installed on top of an existing Debian installation.
