Purism released final specifications for Librem 5

Recently the Purism company released the final specifications of the Librem 5 smartphone in a publication, whose developers have taken a series of software and hardware measures to block tracking attempts and collect information about the user.

Spotlight we will find as part of the computer software that the operating system is based on the PureOS distribution, which uses the Debian package base and the smartphone-friendly GNOME environment (KDE Plasma Mobile and UBports can be installed as options).

The smartphone is notable for the presence of three switches that, at the level of the hardware circuit interrupt, allow you to disconnect the camera, microphone, WiFi / Bluetooth, and the baseband module.

When all three switches are off, the sensors are also locked (IMU + compass and GNSS, light and proximity sensors).

The components of the baseband chip, which is responsible for work in cellular networks, are separated from the main CPU, which ensures the work of the user's environment.

For the baseband chip, there are two options to choose from: Gemalto PLS8 3G / 4G modem and Broadmobi BM818 (made in China).

Librem 5 Specifications

The smart phone will be equipped with i.MX8M SoC with an ARM64 Cortex A53 CPU quad-core (1.5GHz), one chip Auxiliary Cortex M4 and a Vivante GPU with support for OpenGL / ES 3.1, Vulkan and OpenCL 1.2. memory RAM: 3 GB, built-in 32 GB Flash slot plus microSD.

The device will come with a 5.7 inch (IPS TFT) with a resolution of 720 × 1440. The battery capacity will be 3500 mAh.

Other components include Wi-Fi 802.11abgn 2.4 Ghz / 5Ghz, Bluetooth 4, Teseo LIV3F GNSS GPS, 8 and 13 megapixel front and rear cameras, USB Type-C (USB 3.0, power and video out), reader slot of 2FF smart cards.

Mobile apps work is provided by libhandy library (a library that we already talked about here on the blog), inside from which a set of widgets and objects is developed to create a user interface for mobile devices using the GTK and GNOME technologies.

The proposed widgets allow creating universal interfaces that work organically both on large PC and laptop screens, as well as on small smartphone touch screens. The application interface changes dynamically based on screen size and available input devices.

The key objective of the project is to provide opportunities to work with the same Gnome applications on smartphones and computers.

Using libhandy allows to connect a smartphone to the monitor to get a Gnome desktop typical based on a single set of applications.

In addition to supporting applications in the C language, the library can be used to create mobile versions of the interface applications in Python, Rust, and Vala.

Applications translated to libhandy include: all Gnome apps such as gnome-bluetooth, Gnome settings, web browser, Phosh (Dialer), Daty, PasswordSafe, Unifydmin, Fractal, Podcasts, Gnome Contacts and Gnome games.

Since as we mentioned the software is based on the PureOS distribution, using the base of the Debian package and the GNOME Shell for smartphones.

For messaging, the proposed default decentralized communications system based on the Matrix protocol.

Librem 5 represents the opportunity for you to regain control and protect your private information, your digital life through free and open source software, open government and transparency.

The Librem 5 is a phone based on PureOS, a totally free, ethical and open source operating system that is not based on Android or iOS.

Librem 5 hardware and software development is progressing steadily and is scheduled for an initial release in Q2019 XNUMX.
