A few weeks ago the release of the new version of RawTherapee 5.8 was announced, version that comes with little news, but of which one of them is considered quite important for the application since RawTherapee 5.8 includes initial support for RAW images in CR3 format used in Canon cameras, as well as some additional changes.
For those who are still unaware of RawTherapee should know that this is an application that provides a set of tools to correct color reproduction, adjust white balance, brightness and contrast, as well as automatic image enhancement and noise reduction functions.

RawTherapee stands out being able to have the support to be able to support a large number of RAW file formats, including cameras with Foveon and X-Trans sensors, and can also work with the Adobe DNG standard and with JPEG, PNG and TIFF formats (up to 32 bits per channel).
Also the application implements various algorithms to normalize image quality, adjust lighting, remove noise, enhance details, combat unnecessary shadows, correct edges and perspectives, automatically remove broken pixels and change exposure, increase sharpness, remove scratches and dust trails.
RawTherapee is based on the concept of non-destructive editing, similar to some other RAW processing programs.
Actual adjustments to the image are applied during the export process. RawTherapee can work with RAW files from digital cameras, and with images in conventional format. The project code is written in C ++ using GTK + and distributed under the GPLv3 license.
What's new in RawTherapee 5.8?
In this new version highlights the inclusion of the new tool «Capture Sharpening», which Automatically recover details lost by lens blur (diffraction). Capture Sharpening in combination with Post-Resize Sharpening allows for detailed and sharp results.
Another novelty that stands out in this new version is the inclusion of initial support for RAW images in CR3 format used in Canon cameras. Until now, it is only possible to extract images from CR3 files, and the metadata is not supported yet, but it is expected that in later versions this feature will be improved in the application.
As well enhanced support for various camera models is highlighted, including cameras with DCP color profiles with two light sources and white levels, as well as performance optimization of various tools.
Finally it is mentioned that now in this new version the link with the libtcmalloc.so that comes with Google tools to solve problems where glibc will not return the memory to the operating system.
How to install the new version of RawTherapee 5.8 in Liux?
For those interested in being able to obtain this new version of RawTherapee 5.8 you can get this new version by visiting their official website where you can find the different installers of the application (Windows, Mac and Linux).
So for our case "Linux" We can obtain this new version by downloading the AppImage of it.
This can be done by opening a terminal and in it executing the following command:
wget -O RawT.AppImage https://rawtherapee.com/shared/builds/linux/RawTherapee_5.8.AppImage
Done the download now we must give it execution permissions with:
sudo chmod u+x RawT.AppImage
And they can run the application by double clicking on the file or from the terminal with:
./RawT.AppImage
In the case of those who are Ubuntu users and derivatives, they can choose to add a repository to their system and with which they will not only get the latest version published but also inform them about new updates.
To add the repository, just open a terminal and in it you have to type the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway -y
