Red Hat joins Facebook in its Open Computing project

Red Hat has joined the Facebook project to make better use of Open Source technologies in new Data Centers (Data Centers).

Red Hat's first step as a member will be to certify your RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) to work correctly on two specific servers, that is, two servers that meet the specifications and characteristics of this project.

After you are certified, Red Hat will test your platform rhev (Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization) and their data storage technologies that they obtained as part of the Gluster acquisition on those servers.

Now, the question everyone should be asking is ... What is this project (Open Compute Project)?

With this project, Facebook wants using the OpenSource model to redefine how Data Centers should be or be designed.

Bian stevens CTO and vice president of engineering at Red Hat said:

With our constant focus on innovation and end-user value, it was natural for us to take part in this project, not only to extend the benefits of Red Hat products for these systems, but also to help broaden the reach of the open source technologies in its entirety.

Facebook launched this project in April, after building a Data Center in Prineville, Oregon. This is considered the most efficient Data Center in the world, using 38% less energy compared to the other Data Centers of this same company (Facebook), which represents 24% savings and therefore benefits.

Dell, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices y Asus These are some of the other CIAs that are already contributing to this project, either with their intellectual property or with hardware.

Personally, it is actions or movements like these that sometimes make me doubt the real intentions of FacebookI'm not a supporter or fan of this social network, much less what it represents, but I guess not everything is bad or negative, right?
