Released Android x86 4.0 RC2

Android 4.0 x86

I was about to go to sleep, and I remembered the existence of Android x86, a project that has already been talked about before. It basically consists of making it work Android on devices that use x86 processors (mostly PCs, Laptops, etc ...). The support is aimed at Laptops, Notebooks, and other similar devices, although it usually works on Desktop PCs.

Well, apparently in the RC1 it had been achieved hardware acceleration both Intel as if to AMD Arms. Some will already know that Intel launched next to Motorola un certain smartphone that carries in its entrails a Intel Medfield processor (a reduced atom), which is architecture x86, so Intel wanted to contribute a little to the project (well, to AOSP code in general). This RC2 has the following enhancements:

  • Main branch updated to Android 4.0.4.
  • A translator patch from ARM to x86 for Dalvik.
  • Integrated code for the compiler Dalkiv JIT (Just In time) to x86 by Intel.
  • Linux kernel 3.0.36 with fixes and support for more drivers.
  • Added support for some 3G modems.
  • Allows selection of physical keyboard type.
  • supports two cameras at once.
  • Trying to access the SD card accesses the internal memory.

At least, they are the improvements that are noticeable at first glance. It should be noted that there is no Ethernet support yet, only WiFi. That contribution of Intel can be considered very important, Ya que Dalvik JIT speeds up application execution. And if you already accelerate it in ARM, in x86 it must be even better, right?

This makes me think that in a while we could see Desktops with Android x86 pre-installed and fully functional. I will not argue if this is good or bad, but what I will say is what to wear Android in a Laptop in plan Dual Boot not a bad idea ... Yes, Dual Boot, Android x86 it's compatible with Grub (Legacy at least, no idea about Grub2).

We can get it in the download section of your Official Site. The installation must be similar to that of other Linux distros (in advance I tell you that it is in text mode).

I am eager to try this RC2, in itself the RC1 he behaved very well in me PC with Intel. And you ... Do you want to try it? How about Android being ported to x86? Do you see a future for Android on desktop PCs and Laptops? Your opinion is important 🙂

hmm I really think it can be done, but many things would have to be changed in android since at the moment it is only intended for telephones, although it is ported to x86.

If it is about being free on computers, servers and laptops, Linux is already there, I think we should also be free on tablets, mobiles ... and maybe Android will help

Could it be that you can create a Live USB with Universal Installer or Unetbooting, to test it .. ??

With Unetbootin I probably made one with Suse Studio Imagewriter (Linux) and Rufus (Windows) and no problem.

I continue with the previous comment and add will it work with intel i3 processors? in addition to the HP assembly branch the g42?

Since there is no specific iso, it is a matter of choosing one that is compatible. For example, for that i3, the Asus Laptops can work for you (it works fine for me).

I report. I have already tested the RC2. My conclusions: better performance than the RC1, smooth scrolling on the desktop, a bit of Lag when opening the list of Apps, although the apps run in a couple of seconds. Latin and Spanish keyboards are not available, only English, Russian and others.
No Ethernet support yet, but a patch has already been designed and is being tested in some builds, apparently it works mostly on IPv6. Hopefully for the next RC there will be Full Ethernet support.
All this tested with a Compaq Presario PC (Intel E2140, GMA 950, 1GB RAM) with a 101GB Kingston DT4 USB.

interesting, I'll see if I dare to install it on a VAIO Desktop with P4ht and 256mb of ram. Win XP is slow as a turtle!

I hate to say it but I don't know if this version of Android suits you better 😛 ICS eats a lot of memory. Anyway, try and tell us ^^

Well I'm going to test it on a more recent laptop, what is the patch for the Ethernet? You can give me a post to review that. thanks.

The point is that it is not a patch to install and already, it is something that is compiled together with the kernel. You will have to test if the Ethernet is activated: S

Hi, if I get to this post, a lot of people are sure too, I know it's old.

Yesterday I installed it, it is very good, as the author already comments, there is a bit of lag when loading the apps, I installed flash 11.1 but I could not see YouTube videos, not all apps work, except all games.

It is very useful to make an LCD smarter, but the VGA output is not yet functional. I installed it by usb in 15 minutes, very practical.

    It's easy and adds functionality.

I'm testing it on my hp mini and it works fully with the asus build, the only thing that I can't configure is the ARM emulator, although I have already copied the files it needs, it doesn't open the angrybirds nor the my little pony game: 1

Thanks for the data of downloads. Regarding Android on PC, it seems to me that it is a system that has its greatest abilities in telephones. Even on tablets, it still falls a bit short. For me it is the best option for phones and tablets, and your future should be on those sides.
To emulate on vmware or another platform, Android x86 is essential. (the only one that emulates bluetooth for example.
