Released the new version of Proton 4.2-4 with DXVK 1.1.1 and more

Valve-Proton

Some days ago Valve released the new version of the Proton 4.2-4 project, which is based on the work of the Wine project and aims to ensure the release of Linux gaming applications created for Windows and featured in the Steam catalog.

The developments of the project are distributed under the BSD license. As soon as they are ready, the changes developed in Proton are carried over to the original Wine project and related projects such as DXVK and vkd3d.

About Proton

Proton allows you to run game applications that are only available for Windows directly on the Linux Steam client.

The package includes DirectX 10/11 implementation (based on DXVK) and 12 (based on vkd3d), working through the translation of DirectX calls to the Vulkan API, provides improved support for game controllers and the ability to use full screen mode, independently screen resolutions supported in games.

Compared to the Wine project original, performance of multi-threaded games has increased significantly thanks to the use of the »esync» (Eventfd Synchronization) patches.

What's new in Proton 4.2-4?

In this new release of Proton 4.2-4 it is highlighted that the DXVK layer (DXGI, Direct3D 10 and Direct3D 11 implementation on top of the Vulkan API) has been updated to version 1.1.1, which adds support for placing shaders on compressed memory and increasing the performance of various games, especially those based on the Unreal Engine 4.

Also fixed crash when launching RAGE 2 game (To work on systems with AMD GPUs requires the use of a new experimental version of Mesa).

El support for working with the Vulkan graphics API was improved as well as compatibility with the game No Man's Sky.

A minor change that we cannot rule out is the improved icons for some window managers.

Other changes that stand out from this new release are:

  • Fixed a bug that caused the Wine process to freeze when updating the Proton version
  • Game controller definition issues in Yakuza Kiwami and Telltale games
  • Fixed bugs due to incorrectly generated landscapes in the Space Engineers game
  • Fixed crash when starting the game Flower.

How to activate Proton on Steam?

If you are interested in trying what the Proton project offers on your preferred Linux distro, the only requirement they must meet is to install the beta version of Steam Play for Linux or join the Linux beta from the Steam client (if you already have steam installed on your system).

To be able to switch to the Beta version of Steam, dYou must open the Steam client on your system and click on the Steam menu in the upper left corner and then on Configuration.

In the "Account" section you will find the option to register for the beta version. Doing this and accepting will close the Steam client and download the beta version (a new installation).

At the end and after accessing their account, they return to the same route to verify that they are already using Proton.

Now you can install your games as usual, you will be reminded for the only time that Proton is used for it.
