Released the new version of the LiVES 3.0 non-linear video editor

Last week the new version of the LiVES 3.0 non-linear video editor was released, version in which the developers performed the code rewrite whereby this important update, LiVES Video Editor aims to have smoother playback, avoid unwanted crashes, optimized video recording, and make online video downloader more useful.

For those who are unaware of LiVES, they should know that this is a complete video editing system, currently supported on most systems and platforms. Lives thas the ability to edit video in real time, in addition to successful effects, all in one application.

It has the necessary characteristics to be qualified as a professional tool, creating for example videos with movements of various forms. It is designed to be easy to use, yet powerful. It is small in size, but has many advanced features. LiVES combines real-time video performance and non-linear editing in one professional-quality application.

It is a very flexible tool which is used by both professional VJs and video editors: mix and switch clips from the keyboard, use dozens of effects in real time, trim and edit your clips in the clip editor, and stitch them together using the multitrack timeline.

For the more technically savvy, the app is frame and sample accurate, and can be remotely or scripted controlled for use as a video server.

And it supports all the latest free standards.

Major changes in LiVES 3.0

In this new version of LiVES 3.0 improvements were made to the openGL playback plugin, including much smoother playback.

Reference counting for real-time effect instances was also implemented.

Besides that the main interface was extensively rewritten, cleaning up the code and making a lot of visual improvements.

Recording was optimized when video generators are running, as well as improvements to the projectM filter wrapper, including SDL2 support.

Added an option to reverse Z order in multitrack composer (back layers can now overlap front ones).

Of the other changes that stand out from this release are:

  • Added support for musl libc
  • Allow "Enough" in VJ / Pre-decode all frames
  • Refactoring code for timebase calculations during playback (better a / v sync).
  • External audio and audio recording have been improved to improve accuracy and use fewer CPU cycles.
  • Automatic switching to internal audio when entering multitack mode.
  • Show the correct status of effects (on / off) when redisplaying the effect mapper window.
  • Eliminates some race conditions between audio and video threads.
  • Online video downloader improvements, clip size and format can now be selected by adding an upgrade option.

How to install LiVES on Linux?

If you want to install this video editor on your systems, we can do it with the help of a repository. We will only have to open a terminal and execute the following commands in it.

In the case of Ubuntu and derivatives, the first thing we are going to do is add the repository to our system with:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/lives

Now we are going to proceed to update the list of repositories and applications with:

sudo apt-get update

Finally We can install the application and some extras with the following command:

sudo apt-get install lives lives-plugins

Now for those who are Arch Linux users, Manjaro, Arco Linux and other distributions based on Arch Linux, the installation will be done from AUR with the following command:

yay -S lives

While for those who are Fedora users, they must have the RPMFusion repository enabled to perform the installation with the following command:

sudo dnf -i lives

Finally for those who are openSUSE users, the installation is carried out with:

sudo zypper in lives
