The Dead Rise: LMDE 2 Cinnamon and LMDE 2 Mate

I remember those times when they first released LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition), I was a user of Debian and without thinking twice I adopted this distribution as my first alternative. Then the problems with its support and maintenance began, causing Ikey Doherty to create his own version of a project that is not even worth mentioning, because he died like that, without warning.

But apparently the boys from Linux Mint They realized that their Community is important, and what the Community wants they give it to them. That is why they announce the launch of LMDE 2 Cinnamon y LMDE 2 Matte. I mean, we have another season of The Walking Dead. 😀

What's new in LMDE 2 Cinnamon

LMDE 2 Cinnamon

The minimum requirements to run this distribution are:

  • X86 CPU.
  • 512MB RAM (1GB recommended).
  • 9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
  • Graphics with 800 × 600 resolution (1024 × 768 recommended).
  • DVD or USB for installation.

If you happen to be still using LMDE 1, the development team is preparing an update package, so you can wait a bit. If we want to test the LiveCD, the username is "mint" and we access without password. And that's it. Did you expect something else? It's the same old Cinnamon with its improvements and bug fixes.

What's new in LMDE 2 Mate

LMDE 2 Matte

Well, the same as with Cinnamon, nothing that Linux Mint users no longer know, but instead of having Ubuntu as a base, they have Debian. The requirements for LMDE 2 Matte are the same as for LMDE 2 CinnamonAlthough I doubt it a lot, I think that with Mate you need much less.

However, you may encounter some problems with the GTK theme or the icons when you start the session (at least on the LiveCD), so the guys at Linux Mint recommend us to do the following: we open a terminal and put:

$ mate-settings-daemon && killall caja

Another thing to keep in mind is that they do not recommend us to use YUMI or any other program to create multiboot USB sticks, as LMDE will not work properly.

Not bad, but why would I choose this and not Ubuntu or Debian itself?

On a somewhat old computer like the one I'm editing from, I think the best option has been to install LMDE Mate. It works perfect. The only caveat is that I can't download YouTube videos and maybe, maybe, it's slightly slow. Otherwise it is perfectly configurable to suit each individual. It could not be compared with Gnome-Shell in terms of speed or elegance, but in it I can do the same as if I handled an Arch or OpenSUSE: Listen to good music, write a document and print it, or scan it, connect to the Internet and see my email etc. I think that the creators of this distribution can be satisfied with their work because they have achieved it to the full.

      1.    joaco said

I can do the same on Ubuntu or Debian ...

      2.    merlin the debianite said

You can download youtube videos from the console with youtube-dl
        APPEAL INSTALL YOUTUBE-DL
        youtube-dl link of the video

you wait for it to download and go.

But for few resources I think that debian with lxde is perfect.

You can choose the one that suits you, according to your tastes or needs.

Because debian lately gives a lot of errors in installation. You can install this and then if you want to switch to debian.

They can call it whatever they want. In everyone's house, the owner puts order as he wants. If what you want is to protest or whatever, find the place for that, DesdeLinux It will not be the place that will give space to debates of a political nature. 😉

They have not just given up the mania of saying that they work with 512 MB of RAM and I am completely sure that it is not true, »perhaps» MATE will do it, installing with this memory does not mean that after installed it will move, as always resorting to deception, something similar happened to me with the aforementioned ChalettOS, a little sincerity and transparency do not kill anyone.

On the other hand, Debian already has Cinnamon in its repos, it is not the same version, but I am sure it will be better cared for than the original.

It's just my humble opinion, I'm still very happy with Debian 8 + Xfce that does run with 512MB of RAM.

    Hello2 😉

    1.    arazal said

I currently have LMDE1 on a pc with 512 mb of ram and I can assure you that it is the most fluid distro that has gone me. I can do up to 3 and 4 tasks simultaneously, or browse with 8 tabs without despairing. So I give faith of it, it can work with 512 mb of ram, and it is the best that has done it, infinitely better than XP (it was unusable), better than Lubuntu 14.04 (that with the forcepae put the fans on top) better than Lubuntu 12.04 (which being a support version, not LTS gave enough internal errors). I can say that LMDE in performance is a gem, and in stability I don't even tell you. I don't know what a bug is, I don't know what a cracking is ... what is missing from LMUD? Of course, but in performance and reliability, no point of comparison

      1.    joaco said

A bit sensationalist your comment, in my opinion. In my experience with 1gb of ram, they all perform the same and go just as fast, it just depends on the desktop environment you use and how you configure it, that includes having compiled everything. With 512 gb of ram or with 30 gb of ram it should be the same.

        "I don't know what a mistake is."

Sorry, but I think for the sake of GNU / Linux, we should be a little more honest. I have tried many distros and all, ALL, have had their errors. LMDE too. I believe that for someone LMDE, Debian, Fedora, Arch, or whatever, it has not given serious problems and they consider it very stable. But no mistakes? Have you never had problems during an installation from Software Manager or with updates? Have you never crashed Firefox or MPlayer? Have you never had a problem opening an application, or has PulseAudio crashed? Come go. Now it turns out that all distros are great on all computers except mine, where something always happens, even if it's not serious.
On the LMDE 2 page itself it is said that there is an error at the beginning, "Gtk theme and icons failing to load". But it doesn't matter, surely someone comes saying that LMDE 2 has never given them an error, 🙁. I am not saying this for you, Arazal, you comment that you use LMDE 1.

Debian with lxde runs 128 to 256 mb.

The LMDE project remained in the hands of Schoejle and is called
SolydXK. It has two desktops: LXDE and KDE.

I think it is not LXDE and KDE, but XFCE and KDE.

In my opinion LMDE is not one of the strengths of Mint. I stopped using it a long time ago because the update pack always broke my system. I haven't tried this new version, I can't comment.
Anyway in my opinion SolidX (Xfce) and Solid XK (KDE) work better.

Infinite thanks Desdelinux because you have been a big doubt for me, given that I currently have LMDE on an old laptop that has been revived, and with the news and the update not appearing I had my doubts as to whether such a thing was going to happen. So thank you very much indeed

But also because I am proud to see my distro there with the prominence it deserves, and that Mint did not just give it to it, but it is a great one and based on a capital performance it shows. Many thanks

I use a mac from the year 2001, it is a 4 ghz g1.25 e-mac, with an integrated 32 mb video ati, 1 gb ram and a 320 gb IDE hard disk….
... after testing the few distros that can be installed on ppc, nothing goes better or faster than with debian wheezy and the MATE 1.8.1 desktop, it is perfect in terms of functionality, performance, it is configurable, nothing is missing, the ones that we use old PCs, we are more than grateful for the desktop fork of the old gnome2. This from LMDE I don't see anything interesting at all, it's just debian with a little visual changes and well, it doesn't add anything. It is not faster or better than if you had installed the blessed Debian with the graphical environment of your choice. It only changes that it has the classic theme of linux mint, a nice wallpaper that is not so cute either. Nothing else. I don't understand the enthusiasm of people using GNU-Linux with this LMDE. It is not justified.

    1.    merlin the debianite said

The truth is when I tried LMDE at that time when the first version came out it seemed very boring, I really couldn't configure the appearance, so as a newbie I started reading and ended up using LMDE with debian repos by giving aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade, which It was my surprise that the whole environment and the wallpapers changed to debian ones, so since then I have been using debian testing since 2012.

Leaving my brand new Linux MInt with KDE, which was where I learned the basics of linux since 2008.

It's good to test distros, but I don't make a living from it, so I installed Debian testing 3 years ago and it's getting faster every day.
I open at least 40 chrome tabs, (I need to leave them open) +5 Dolphin tabs + 15 kate tabs + filezilla + console + 2 libreoffice templates = 4Gb of RAM, I have almost 2 free. And it runs very fluid, zero hangs, I turn it off every 2 or 3 weeks approx if I am not going to use it for 2 days.

I recommend Debian KDE (I went through ubuntu, kubuntu, Arch, etc)

    Greetings from my house !!!

Does anyone know how long it might take to upgrade to Betsy from LMDE1? I say it for if this next save me the issue of formatting and other stories ... it would be interesting since, it is assumed (among other things) that if you choose LMDE instead of LMUD (Linux Mint Ubuntu Edition) it is because you do not have to be passing version every x time but you update and now

It would be interesting to know. Thanks a lot

Well, I struggle a lot with partitions and I don't know how to do them

I love the beginner thing. None of you have any idea what to install next, or how to secure your distro, and on top of that you talk.
Let's see if any give ideas.

My dear friend, I have been using Linux for 7 years and believe me, I still consider myself a novice, if you cannot do something as simple as partitions it is because you should definitely read more, since or I know it is due to the copy-paste that I made of desdelinux and other sites searching on the internet, it's not that difficult either, but believe me, I lost many files experimenting, including the U thesis. XD

I love LMDE. It is true that it had its problems, but I have been using LMDE 2, with Mate, since it came out, and it is wonderful. It has the security and stability of Debian, the elegance of Mint, and the speed of Mate. I have tried many distros, and this is the one I like the most, hands down.
