Slackel KDE 4.9.2: Slackware-based Distro with the latest KDE

Slackel KDE 4.9.2 has been released, and surely you wonder ... what is this? 🙂

From its name we can guess that it is a distro that uses KDE, specifically KDE 4.9.2 (right now the latest version), but not only that:

  • Kernel 3.2.29 (32 and 64 bits)
  • Firefox 16.0.2
  • KMail, KTorrent, Akregator, Kopete ...
  • OpenJRE-7u9 (OpenJDK-7u9 available in the repos), Rhino, Icedtea-web, Pidgin and Gftp.
  • Gparted, Wicd, slapt-get (and its Gslapt GUI), etc.
  • It also has Bangarang 2.1 and Clementine 1.0.1, as well as K3B 2.0.2 to record our discs.
  • In the Office automation section we have Calligra (Word, Stage and Tables), KOrganizer, KAddressBook, and the Okular viewer.
  • In the graphics section we have Krita, Karbon, Gwenview, KColorChooser, and KSnapshot.

In short, a KDE distro that has the latest versions, excellent for those who suffer from versionitis 😀

I do not know if it will be very relevant but I was seeing on the arch website that its new installation CD brings the kernel 3.6 https://www.archlinux.org/news/november-release-of-install-media-available/ So if this distro brings 3.2.29 it doesn't bring all the latest, right? Or is the arch 3.6 kernel older even though the number is higher?

There is talk of the latest when it comes to desktop, Slack is a distro that uses only stable kernels and extended support.

Perfect, I was just going to comment on this.
While Slackware is a server-oriented distro Slackel aims to be a modern desktop distro based on the strength of Slackware (something like SolusOS / Debian GNU / Linux).

Let's be honest, with kernel 3.6.5 released (Liquorix is in 3.6.4) there is no need on a desktop to use an old kernel, especially that today the optimizations and new features in each version of the kernel are enormous.

JO JO JO ... then I who use Kernel 3.2.0 ... am I in the stone age? … LOL!

          Y…
Among other things, the 3.6 branch brings an optimized ip / TCP routine that allows faster browsing, the quota of disk users using ext4 is improved (very useful for those who manage shared computers by several users), suspend / hibernate hybrid improved (that is, a suspend that activates hibernation when the battery is about to run out), improved BTRFS, faster wireless connection (and it shows!) and several other changes.

My policy whenever a new kernel comes out and does not have bugs (of those reported, of course) that affect me directly is to update, if I find a problem later I can always return to the previous kernel.

In this case, more (choice) is better! 😉

But as Debian users who are in the middle of the ice age due to the freezing of the distro, the repos are a bit out of date.

Yes! 🙁… I'm crazy waiting for KDE 4.9.x

Since this topic came up, don't you know how long Debian will be frozen?

And not to be so off-topic, I have KDE4.9 in openSuse and the progress is noticeable, it is much more fluid than version 4.9, and if we add the stability of its father Slackware it promises to be an excellent distro that can face it Chakra

@ KZKG ^ Gaara if you think KDE 4.8.5 is fine, wait until you try KDE 4.9.X

Please, chakra and slackel compete in two different leagues, don't make vain comparisons.

It seems like a good layout. What package manager does Slackware use ?! There is so much I don't know about this distro ..

    1.    msx said

Slackware, by definition, does not have a package manager nor does it automatically resolve dependencies upon installation! And as he says in his wiki: "this is the way we like Slackware who use this distro."
Obviously the method has its advantages and disadvantages, the first is how cumbersome it is to install and manage packages - compared to exceptional package managers like pacman, yum (awesome what evolved!), Zypper or connary.
On the other hand, Slackware packages are simply tar.gz files (I don't know if they have already upgraded to tar.xz) that are unzipped against the / directory and voila, the program is installed!

What Slackware does have is a package manager made by its community called slap-get based -much above- on (concepts taken from) dpkg / apt-get and that aims to alleviate this whole issue of dependency resolution.

With that said, I don't know if Slackel will use slap-get or has its own package manager.

If it is only unzipping the package to run the program, only the time it takes to install would be affected; but if you have to resolve dependencies ... how tedious 😐

Since they have touched on the kernel's issue here, I want to tell you about my experiences with them in the following distributions: Kubuntu 12.04 and 12.10, in both x64 and in 2 other x86 machines I have 3.5.5 installed, I updated it to 3.5.7 and without any problem, then (not to make it extensive) I tried in their order, 3.6 -3.6.2 - 3.6.3 - 3.6.4 and 3.6.5 and when I restarted with any of them and opened the Pidgin, it told me that it was already connected from another site and to reconnect, I did but the sign would come out again, I tried with Skype and although it opened it did not show me any contact of those who were connected, if then I opened a browser (Opera, Chromium, Mozilla) to see my emails Although I opened the page, the emails did not load, I restarted but with any of the 3.5 series and I did not have those problems, I tried again with any of the 3.6 series and again it gave problems, the truth is I stayed with the 3.5.7 and I hope someone can explain the reason for that reason on 4 different machines.

Ahhh I forgot to state that with the 3.6 series the bluetooh was misconfigured, it did not recognize any device, cell phone, headphones, keyboard, etc ... the brightness and volume buttons did not work, and even the LibreOffice took time to appear. With the 3.5 series everything is fine.

For those who want Slackware 14 + KDE 4.9.2, as always Eric Hameleers (Slackware developer known as alien) has unofficial packages:

    http://alien.slackbook.org/ktown/

These packages are very good, in fact the alien ktown repo is usually used to test the KDE versions that have to be integrated into the current branch of Slackware.

I also had strange problems when updating the kernel. Is that why stable distros use a kernel not as updated as 3.2
