SLAX 7 RC1 Available

Slax, the mythical portable distro based on Slackware, is available for download, Release Candidate 1, which has many applications of its own. KDE (kde network, kde multimedia, kde games) pidgin IM, Firefox, MPlayer and more.

The entire medium occupies only 183Mb for the 32-bit version and 188 for the 64-bit version. With 256Mb RAM are enough to run this distro with desktop KDE4 (This is what the author assures 😀), without a doubt an interesting and surprising project, which has achieved a KDE with those consumer qualities !.

Slax has always used KDE, although with the move to KDE 4 they were using another desktop but I don't remember which one. It is a very well achieved system, if I'm not mistaken it has a program installation method in the style of the BSD Ports or the Chakra bundles, I'm not sure because I tried it about 5 years ago.

The merit here is to deliver a KDE 4 with such low resource consumption, which has always been one of the main features of Slax, and at the same time dismantle the myth that this desktop needs large amounts of memory.

Today I download it to test it. I do not believe that in such a small space there is a complete KDE O_O

It is surely cropped. You know, without Nepomuk, Strigi and without any effects. Still, putting any modern desk on a diet is commendable.

And to think that in Debian I had to download about 500 mb to install only the Kde Plasma.

    The INCREDIBLE truth.

      That's because of the debian meta-packages ...
