Slitaz RazorQT: A new flavor of Slitaz with Qt

I think we all know Slitaz, but for those who don't know what I'm talking about, well Slitaz it's nothing more than a distribution (or mini-distribution) ultra light, which allows us to use a computer with few features, and that only occupies an iso of 30Mb.

You can get more information at this link de Wikipedia

Slitaz uses LXDE to offer us a simple and fast Desktop Environment, and has a set of applications that will help us to perform the most common tasks: Web browser, IRC Client… Etc.

But something new is brewing among the developers of SlitazWell, we already have another flavor of it available, but this time, using RazorQT as Desktop Environment. Apparently it is still somewhat unstable, but it can be downloaded and tested right now.

What does the Slitaz RazorQT include?

In the .iso that I have lowered, which weighs about 39 Mb, we can find (among other applications) el Web browser Arora, a kind of fork of Mozilla Firefox, but written in Qt, which becomes an indispensable tool, because the preferences of Slitaz, or rather, its control center, is now managed through the browser.

How to Live Aligned with File manager we met with qtfm, which from what I see, is a fork of PCManFM, much simpler, but with the same characteristics such as:

  • Eyelashes (can be put up or down)
  • View in Details or Icons
  • Open Terminal in Current Directory
  • Custom ShortCuts
  • Custom actions
  • Bookmarks

It looks like this:

In the few tests that I have done, it can be noted as a characteristic of this distro, its lightness and speed. It still has a few bugs, but nothing that cannot be fixed shortly. For example in VirtualBox, when starting the session it gave me an error with the desktop RazorQT (that's why they see the black background) more if I lift the distro from a usb memory that does not happen.

In other words, simple details. The good thing about all this is that those who prefer to use applications Qt, no need to use KDE, they already have one more light option to count on 😀

It is good to see that not only does it stay in LXDe but that they try to move to other environments… .. now speaking of Slitaz, today I downloaded version 3.0 that was in GUTL's FTP (I know version 4.0 is out but that is the one that I have available at the moment) the problem is that I want to put it in a Flash memory so I put the iso in UnetBootIn and that's it but something must be wrong since now it does not recognize Flash as bottable. so I wanted to work on Slitaz 3.0

    😉

I apologize for how bad the URL code is

        Fixed 😀

openSUSE has an infallible tool to make bootable flash drives, it's called Imagewriter, I don't know if it will be in the repositories of the other distros, but it has never failed with any ISO.

If it is SUSE Studio ImageWriter I think it is designed to create a USB-Live from SUSE distributions, is it not? There is an Ubuntu ImageWriter (but with the same condition).

Thanks for the tip, right now I'm scheduling the download.

Remember to send me the link of the distro you want by mail to leave it downloading for the weekend 😛

In the JC FTP (GUTL / ISO folder) it was already put, I asked Carlos to download it and there it is 😉

Good thing (good Carlos always lending us a hand), in that case we already have a national mirror.

          1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Well ... actually the one who asked him to download it was me, but still hahahaha

          2.    Hugo said

You're right, what happens is that as my thanks for your collaboration in GUTL are permanent, sometimes I omit that part (errare humanum est). 😉

Don't worry about it, Pablo is already downloading it and it's about 75%. Thank you anyway.

You look at the distro more or less (evaluated only by the images) what strikes me the most is that it only weighs 40 MB 0.0

As far as I know qtfm and arora are not forks. Although it catches my attention that they have included arora that he has been standing for a long time and not qupzilla.

Likewise, the other day I was trying to have a qt environment without having to have kde or gtk libraries in chakra. The truth is that it is very difficult. The most uncomfortable thing is the file browser. Put qtfm to your liking, because it takes a while (I recommend atool to extract the different types of files). Also keep in mind that razor-qt is in alpha, it is not unstable, but it is quite incomplete, it lacks many configuration options. Another thing is that many qt applications use any type of icons, not those indicated by the system and it is not very aesthetic. Although, yes, it is very light, chakra consumes 115 Mb startup and when I add some kde programs (dolphin for example) the consumption does not exceed 160 Mb.

    1.    elav said

Well, maybe they are not Forks, but they are very similar in terms of appearance and functionality, which led me to think that, especially with qtFM, which is almost the same as PCManFM.

But hey, anyone is wrong 😛

Well, I'm writing about this distro (I use it occasionally), and it's really light. 40MB iso, and just started less than 50MB 🙂 I have already customized it a bit, here is a screenshot ... http://imagebin.org/225464 It is Openbox + Tint2 + LXterminal. The Openbox theme is Ambiance LXDE, and the GTK is Zukitwo modified to be orange 😛

Great note, I promise to try it. The truth is that it has little that I just discovered RazorQT, I have almost always been from Gnome, nowadays enlightenment, and when I wanted QT then obviously KDE, but I am trying other proposals and I am looking to see how RAzorQT and IceWM. Maybe it's a bit off-topic, but it would be great to find a guide to configure these alternatives

    A greeting !

And how about Slitaz repositories? What package system do you use?
I have never gone beyond putting this distro in a usb to test it (luxury, yes), but if it has a good package system it may deserve to be installed 🙂

    1.    auroszx said

Well, its repositories are small, but it has a plus about it (I'll tell you later). Its package manager is TazPKG, which uses packages compressed with lzma, which have the extension .tazpkg. Because they are well compressed, it takes much less time to download and install them (I think I installed Xfce4.8 in about 15 minutes…). TazPKG has many options from other managers, although it may be missing one or the other ...
Regarding the repos, they have few packages (the entire Stable repo weighs less than 3GB), but TazPKG can convert packages from deb, rpm, pkg.tar.gz (Arch), and tgz (Slackware) to use them ... of course, You must convert the dependencies if you need them (or if you have them but in incompatible versions ...).

It sounds quite interesting and it seems straightforward. Maybe the goal in a PIII that I have died of laughter, to see if he behaves well.
        Thanks for the info!

Interesting, I've always liked programs that use QT, but on my KDE Netbook it goes awful. RazorQT is the option.

I love Slitaz, it is super light and super good, I love how it handles and the ease of use, hopefully soon try it on my USB

How do I pass it to my USB from Windows?

      1.    elruiz1993 said

With Unetbootin, there is a build for Windows

  11.   xykyz said

Let's see if this increases the growth of RazorQT, because the truth is that I liked it when I tried it.

Version 4.0 gives me problems when lifting from USB, it does not load me, I have downloaded it three times from the official site. The first time I put it in the USB from debian with Unetbootin, the 3 worked perfect but the 4 the black screen remains at the beginning but it does not start. I also put them in USB with the Tazusb from windows, the same, the 3 perfect, but the 4 identical. Now going down RazorQT, let's see what happens hehe ... greetings ...

    1.    Sergio Esau Arámbula Duran said

the same thing happens, do not use tazusb with Slitaz 4 LXDE or with Slitaz razorQT

      1.    doofy said

And since it happened from windows without the TazUSB, at the moment I don't have linux installed… Well, I'll do it on a virtual pc, with the UnetBootin, it should work right ???

          1.    Hyuuga_Neji said

Downloading ... I wait to see if with that I can have the Slitaz 4.0 (which I like better than the RazorQt) in the USB because with Unetbootin I could not achieve it.

You know that I discovered that Slitaz 4.0 does not come with a video player by default so I suppose in your repos they are, it hurts that we here in Cuba cannot use the repos directly from the internet

Hi, I'm Ariel, I'm trying to install the 3dfx vodoo 3000 series driers, do you have any idea how to install it, since I have a 4 mhs pentium 2.3 with 256 ram and 16 video, I realized they are not installed because I can't play the emulator Sega in full screen and I don't know why but when I'm playing it in window mode the screen flickers.
