SolusOS: One More Debian Squeeze Based Distribution

SolusOS is a distribution created by the maintainer or initial creator of LMDE, Ikey doherty, who recently gave you an interview (what do I recommend) to our colleague burjans en Com-SL.

Well, for some personal reasons regarding the direction I was taking LMDE, ikey decide to create on your own SolusOS, a distribution based on debian-squeeze, but it contains, thanks to custom repositories, the latest versions of some applications such as:

  • Firefox + Thunderbird 12
  • LibreOffice 3.5.3.2
  • mini tube 1.7
  • Flash 11.2.202.233
  • PlayOnLinux 4.0.18
  • Basic icon theme.
  • FirstRunWizard fixed for ATi / AMD users.
  • Composer for the Desktop.
  • VLC 2.0.1

Also, I was looking at the page of Distrowatch that has packages of Xfce 4.10, although the default desktop is Gnome. For the future of this distribution, ikey leave the following message in the interview:

We will support Solus OS 1 until I allow it "Squeeze", however, long before that we will make known Solus OS 2 based "Wheezy" with Gnome 3, to which it has slight modifications improving Gnome fallback and including gnome-session y gnome-panel worked by us in order to offer the same experience as Gnome 2, which means that we do not need a fork and that we will keep 100% compatibility.

The requirements to run this distribution are the following:

  • I686 processor.
  • 512MB of RAM.
  • 3GB free disk space.
  • Monitor with 1024 × 768 resolution.
  • DVD-RW or USB.

I would have liked more that it was based on wheezy from the beginning, but what is without doubt is that it is beautiful. 😛

    So isn't it rolling?

I liked LMDE but I switched to Debian because LMDE was very overloaded, then Sid broke because I used the LMDE repos for Cinnamon ¬¬ », now I'm on Ubuntu.

Will I try this alternative? I think not, it is the same (Debian) only with specific configurations.

I have a question, how can I make new users have specific settings? if someone could help me on that.

So that users have files or folders in their Home when these users are created, you can put whatever you want in / etc / skel 😉

I knew it for some time now, they were walking, as expected, its developers were walking through the Linux Mint forums, but at that time there was still no stable edition, I suppose that with this announcement you mean that there is already one, right? It is a good option if you want to continue in gnome2 to have Debian Squeeze stability but not for this reason to have packages such as the browser, the mail client, etc. out of date.

With KDE it looks great… .I think that when I get tired of messing around with Suse I'll give it a look …… :)

It's not KDE it's gnome 2, just with the gnomenu

I just met her via G +, I had no idea about this project, so at first that it is based on Squeeze and that it is Gnome with the possibility of including XFCE 4.10 in the future I like it 🙂

I'm already toasting it to a DVD, this weekend it's going to my Laptop 🙂

Thank you very much, this is one of the few distributions that you can say that we can test with full confidence since its developer has already done a good job with LMDE.

    Regards!

I have not been able to resist and I have already installed and tested it.

Hey, I installed it on a virtual machine and I'm very interested, I wanted to ask you if you know if it is compatible with the compiz plugins-extra, if you know if they go without problems please let me know 🙂

I will follow it as soon as they include Gnome 3. If, as you comment, it tries to avoid what many consider LMDE errors, it deserves my consideration.

In the end, I went back to debian and installed the Wi-Fi drivers by parcel. At the moment everything works very well for me, I installed xfce4 and I thought it would be heavier, it is surprising how well it works
