Some of the news in Plasma2 [KDE SC]

I have long understood that the best desktop in GNU / Linux For me, the most modern and the one that best suits my needs is without a doubt KDE SC.

It has a stable development and very interesting options that make it unique, not only in GNU / Linux, but compared to the rest of the Operating Systems.

The news that will include plasma 2 confirm my opinion, because beyond the Artwork appearance which will improve a lot, under the hood very interesting options are prepared.

Of the changes that are coming, the one that most caught my attention was Baloo, a new semantic engine that comes to replace Nepomuk. The latter, although greatly improved from KDE 4.11, it is not the ideal option to achieve a Semantic Desktop as God intended.

It is because of that Baloo It comes to replace it promising not only faster indexing, but also a notable improvement in performance and CPU consumption. It will also come from Milou (in honor of the famous Tintin dog), a new application to search the desktop.

Another important step is support for Wayland, which will become one of the pillars of Plasma 2 and whose arduous task is to make Kwin stand out (even more) over the rest of the Window Managers.

If you thought that everything ended here, then know that KDM will be discontinued. The obsolete Session manager apparently it is the cause that the start of KDE be partially slowed down. Alternatives? Well LightDM o SDDM they are in the spotlight.

All this and more was what was cooked in the BlueSystems office in Spain from January 10 to 16.

I only have a question, why if in the photo you see that one of the KDE developers uses google chrome or chromium, I don't know, why the hell they don't help to integrate it with the whole system interface ??????
Not to mention firefox, which I think is the one that is doing the worst aesthetically in KDE.

On the other hand I am glad that they talk about many improvements in that desktop that I like so much (nothing was the same after losing Gnome2)

    1.    FreeBSDDICK. said

They could say the same about the operating system from which you publish ..- «Why, if there are solutions like kde for many distros, the users do not contribute at least with the use? «

My Chromium looks good on KDE. You just have to have Oxygen GTK installed, and in the GTK theme settings, activate oxygen-gtk. In Chromium you choose to use GTK theme and that's it.

If you use oxygen-gtk, even Firefox looks good, not to mention Libreoffice, which in my opinion looks beautiful with that theme.

Very interesting, you are convincing me to go back to KDE on my ASUS and leave the dear Xfce for my old laptops !!!!

PS: I don't think Milou is Tintin's dog, rather they sound like Baloo and Milou from The Jungle Book !!!!

What a donkey, my fault 😛

I did not know about baloo, there is not much information about it.
The truth is that the next version of kde looks very promising, especially what they are doing with kdelibs, it will help other qt developers a lot

Thanks for the info. He knew about Milou but not about Baloo. It catches my attention because Nepomuk was taking flight and until now, although it was not all that was expected, it was one of the great pillars of KDE SC. There is also Sprinter who will replace Krunner, so Milou will have to differentiate himself a lot if they do not want to duplicate efforts. I wonder what else will have to change in KDE so that it finally becomes, before the general public, the definitive desktop that for many it already is? Although we always realize that it can be improved.
    Greetings.

I have tried KDE (Kubuntu) for a month, it definitely did not suit me, it has some positive things, but I did not like it, they flood you with options and when you are looking for a basic option is to look for a needle in a haystack, but I like Qt more than Gtk programmed the 2 and I stay with Qt, in short I would love the gnome style (not shell) but I prefer the Qt libraries, hopefully one day XFCE will migrate to Qt not to Gtk, but maintaining a style similar or similar to Mint.

Without a doubt, the future of Linux is in KDE, I would like to see Wayland be implemented soon !!! Jubilen soon to Xorg, also good decision from the developers to discontinue KDM for me it was a bit ugly! And another thing when KDE Frameworks 5 comes out because the Neon Project is still with many bugs ... Good info by the way!

Good for the session manager, the main drawback of KDE is the time it takes to load the desktop.

How excellent that KDE is being improved even more, since it is my favorite desktop and as elav says it has improved a lot recently, which made me leave unity and gnome3, definitely moving to KDE, so go ahead KDE, Greetings

Thanks to @elavdeveloper I changed the gnome2 for KDE because cinnamon and mate still seem a bit immature for my taste, let's say, but I hope to try a mint 2014 LTS soon. What I like about Linux is the variety.
