Crowdfunding campaign begins to make GNUPanel v2.0 a reality

Those users who maintain a website on a hosting, are generally familiar with CPanel.

CPanel is a proprietary payment panel, which is used by almost all hosting providers. Through this panel you can perform all kinds of tasks, manage our domains or subdomains, FTP, emails, sites, among other options.

The CPanel license does not allow us to modify it, adapt it to our needs, share it, nothing of which the software that is Free Software does.

How would you like to have a hosting panel that is Free Software?

Or better still be part of that hosting panel, make its development possible, use it and make improvements and changes.

I mean a panel that you can install on your server with a simple apt-get install gnupanel and they can manage everything related to domains, subdomains (dns), put online or offline sites with simple clicks, https, create our own ftp with users in less than 1 minute. Or have our mail server in a few minutes with zero effort.

Crowfunding campaign for GNUPanel 2.0

GNUPanel is a panel written by the founders of GNUtransfer (same company where we have hired servers y gracias a la cual funciona DesdeLinux). Es libre y está disponible para todo el público dese hace varios años.

It is a panel that they want to rewrite from scratch, to reprogram it completely so that the new version (v2.0) is infinitely better than the current one.

What you want to achieve is to universalize GNUPanel. That allows the 'on-foot' user, one who does not know anything (or not much) about advanced system or network administration, to do all of the above, view statistics, and fully manage their hosting space.

GNUPanel will also have a plugin system (yes, like Firefox), through which the global GNU / Linux community could add functions, options, and improve it constantly.

Unlike CPanel (for which they would have to pay $ 200 a year and it would not be very simple to install) GNUPanel would be free and most importantly: Free Software, so anyone could contribute to its development. It would be a community project, done by the global GNU / Linux community and for the community.

Crowfunding campaign

CrowFunding is the new way in which great ideas or projects manage to gather the budget to be put into practice, to make them real.

It consists of explaining the idea, what you want to achieve with the project and then asking for donations to be able to put that project into practice.

Ricardo, Jorge and Mariano are the authors of GNUPanel, what they propose on the crowfunding page is to raise $ 25.000 to be able to work between 12 and 16 weeks constantly and uninterruptedly. They will be able to leave their daily occupations and dedicate the 3 for several months just to reprogram and improve GNUPanel.
(This rewriting was planned a few years ago and did not materialize for the reasons stated. here)

This will be a campaign called "all or nothing", their goal is to raise $ 25.000 but in case they do not reach it, the money is fully reimbursed, that is, suppose I want to donate $ 20 but regardless of my desire help; not enough people donated and the desired number was not reached. My money will not be kept by other people, much less, 100% of the money I donated will be returned to me. If the contribution is specified, it means that the new code is specified.

What do you want to achieve as a result

  • You want to achieve a completely free panel, the best and most flexible free alternative to CPanel.
  • The code will be 100% new, polished, optimized, it will be all under the GPL license.
  • In addition, the installation of this new panel will be really simple, they will be available to all .DEB packages (or others) so that it can be installed without problems, in addition to being included in the official repositories of distros such as Debian.
  • System of plugins, addons, through which anyone could help, contribute to the development in a simple way, without much problem.
  • A completely new graphical interface, which can be customized in appearance and dimensions.
  • Support for IPv6.
  • The source code and packages are available for everyone to enjoy, so that it can be added to the official distros repositories.

GNUPanel does not discriminate, it does not matter if your business is large, medium or small, you can install and use GNUPanel at no cost

Currently there is a reality, the code of the current version of GNUPanel does not allow you to do what you want, scalability and flexibility are not virtues of it at all, that is why you want to totally reprogram in order to take it to a new and better level .

Software details

screenshot2

  • It will be all rewritten using PHP and Postgre as the database.
  • Everything that the current version of GNUPanel allows will be in the new version (subdomains, FTP, email accounts, manage databases, mailing lists, redirect, tickets, directory protection, statistics, etc.)
  • The ability to write plugins and increase options will be a BIG step forward.
  • A guide to using the plugin system will be available.
  • The panel will initially be available in English and Spanish.
  • All information related to installation and configuration of everything related to the panel will be on the Wiki.
  • The user interface (GUI) will be fully editable, CSS styles, colors. Logos, images and icons can be changed from the same administration interface.
  • It will have support for payments using initially PayPal or Bitcoin through Bitpay.
  • Sensitive information (users, domains, etc.) will travel over the internet in an encrypted manner.
  • The domain gnupanel.org will be active for support and help, mailing lists, forums, news updates, everything necessary to help and assist those who use GNUPanel.

Can't donate? Other ways to help

We know that not everyone can help with donations, either due to characteristics or restrictions of the country where they live, due to financial difficulties of each one, etc., it is not something new, far from it.

The good news is that Anyone can help the campaign, just give it a lot of promotion in forums and social networks, share the URL of the campaign page (on Indiegogo) and visit it frequently so that it is among the most popular on Indiegogo. Not everything is money, that will also help a lot.

Crowfunding campaign for GNUPanel 2.0

Keeping up to date?

I recommend if you want to stay informed about this, that you follow @GNUTransfer on Twitter, you can also review the Indiegogo page or check the site frequently GeekLab.com.ar.

Let's see if with more patience (not so much) I will be contributing my Nuevo Sol cents to be able to contribute to the project.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

And by the way, GNUPanel is not alone. Is also ZPanel, which is installed on the hosting that my website has. Anyway, I will do my best to support both GNUPanel and ZPanel.

      1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Yes right, could you install it with aptitude install zpanel? I imagine that the installation was like a guided script, as with iRedMail, which are not in the official repos, right?

        1.    eliotime3000 said

Well ... I haven't had time to install the zpanel on Debian, but I'll try it anyway.

And by the way, I will try to install the zPanel with this script to see how it works out.

And why not invest the time to improve Kloxo?

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Because this project is precisely aimed at the FSF, it has also been the first free alternative to cPanel that has emerged.

These types of projects need everyone's help!
    Good contribution!

And by the way, there is not even a beta of GNUPanel 2.0 to download on that site.

      1.    elav said

The goal is to raise money to work on the new version full time. How is there going to be something that you haven't started working on yet? I mean, maybe they have some proof, but maybe not.

        1.    eliotime3000 said

Well, I wish they had released an alpha version so I could contribute to the coding. Recently, I just refilled my debit card that I affiliated with PayPal.

Anyway, I hope that the campaign will prosper, and that the FSF promotes it as an alternative to cPanel (in fact, it is much easier than zPanel and cPanel together).

Is it true that SoluOS will not be continued? This is announced on their official website. For me the truth is a shame.

Sounds like an interesting product to me, but the rewards should improve.

    1.    xenfan said

As this is not a project to manufacture a product or open a business, the rewards are rather symbolic and aim to create a community.
The code itself and its unrestricted public use is the great prize for all 🙂

      1.    eliotime3000 said

And not only that, but also the possibility of being able to adapt it to several platforms (among them, Windows, OpenBSD, OSX and many others).

And by the way, the GNUTransfer customer service is spectacular.

      2.    Windousian said

I think they should put t-shirts or nonsense like that to encourage donations. At this rate they won't get anything.

        1.    xenfan said

If the program and its characteristics and its gratuitousness are not enough encouragement, that is not going to change with some "t-shirts or nonsense" as you say.
It would also increase the budget. Isn't it better to be tight and get the program?
You can buy a t-shirt at any store. Low participation has nothing to do with it!

Paradoxically I commented on the news in another forum to help and there are those who say that it is a development too…. economic !!

Well, I think physical rewards help. I follow a lot of crowdfunding projects and those details show.

This project seems excellent to me, it should have left a long time ago, even so it is never too late, I have no money but I already shared the link on all my social networks, I hope it is achieved.

I think that the best alternative these days is ispconfig 3, it has an app for android from where you can monitor the server, although it costs a lot to install it and it doesn't have as many functionalities.

Here's a how to for debian:

Hopefully they decide to use Cherokee as the server for GNUPanel and not the old and inefficient Apache.

    Cherokee: http://cherokee-project.com/

    1.    xenfan said

As Geeklab clarifies, version 2.0 will use Apache as usual but the new package may have derived with other web servers such as Cherokee, Nginx, etc.

Whoever can make their contribution so we can use it 🙂

    2.    mario said

But first it would be necessary for someone to support Cherokee, but obviously they will choose something supported like Apache or nginx. In distros for servers such as debian Cherokee it is in oldstable, that is, nothing was uploaded for years, nor was it included in wheezy.

  9.   Mauricio said

It would be very good if that project becomes a reality.

Tomorrow, which is payday, I will contribute a few dollars to the cause, hopefully if it comes out and is a watershed.

Thank you very much for your help to the project 🙂

    2.    xenfan said

There are several of us who spread the word but nothing happens.
Only here there are 30000 or 40000 followers, is not it incredible to think that with 5 contributing 5 dollars it will come out?

      1.    Mauricio Baeza said

Yes, that is the logic of those who contribute, but not that of many others ... this project seems very necessary ... but you see, not all are of the same opinion ...

        regards

  11.   Juan said

Would there be a way to participate in its development?

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Write to jorge [at] gnutransfer [dot] com to explain about it.

In the meantime, I will be adapting the GNUPanel to run on Windows (I know it is difficult, but the truth is that it will attract more curious by using that control panel).

This project seems a bit out of place!

    1.    eliotime3000 said

It does not seem to me that it was so out of place, because the control panel in question is mainly focused on LAMP servers, BSD and / or other children of UNIX.

Also, many people are interested in managing their website, so cPanel could be useful but it is proprietary software.

I think this campaign is very important, and although it does not affect me directly, I think that I have indirectly used web pages that use this background technology, but ... is it always necessary to have it first?
For some time I thought that the blog had not been updated. As an opinion, it seems unfair to me that a piece of news has these privileges over others.
Could another way to highlight this news? (not so intrusive).

    Thank you

    1.    Javier said

This project obviously does not work but there are several obvious clarifications to make, it is not good to despise logic with such care!

Of course, it is not NECESSARY to be in the first place. It is simply a CHOICE. A show of support for a project and a way to help.

Nor is it an INJUSTICE because the order of the news is not established according to any ranking or vote. And for this very reason there are no PRIVILEGES.

And finally ... Is it really so INTRUSIVE to support a campaign for only 40 days?

This is not going to reach its goal for other reasons and NOT for taking the post off the cover, that is evident. There is also a target data: The number of readings has no longer changed.

Do not exaggerate with purist positions out of context.
