Steam on Manjaro (Playing Counter Strike)

Today I come to tell you a little about how it runs Steam and more specifically the game «Counter Strike 1.6" In Myself Manjaro Linux. I tell you that I do not have super hardware and I have always used Debian, but I was never able to have the same efficiency that I have had in Manjaro.

My Hardware

My computer is a Pentium IV (yes, no kidding, IV) with a little more than 1gb of ram:

About the game:

Wikipedia says:

«Counter-Strike is a multiplayer type game (either on LAN or online). It is a complete modification of the Half-Life game, made by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe who released the first version on June 18, 1999. The latest version of the game is Counter-Strike Global Offensive, one of the versions of the action game The most played first person online in the world, before more recent games, such as the Counter-Strike: Source (or CS: S) version based on the Source engine which has been developed for the Half-Life 2 game. Today, it is also playable on GNU / Linux or Macintosh OS X from the Steam platform. »

Basic principles

Counter-Strike action takes place in rounds of a duration chosen by the creator, in which a team of terrorists (or TT's) faces a team of antiterrorists (or CT's).

The victorious team is the one that fulfills all its victory objectives or the elimination of all the players of the other team. If at the end of the round there is no direct victory for one of the two teams, the team that did not achieve its objectives loses by elimination.

It is curious that this popular and old game needs so many hardware requirements in Linux if we compare it with its version in Windows, on the other hand it is a game that is worth spending a few pennies.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Well, that of the requirements is because the game runs with the resolution that you have by default on the desktop (and that means more hardware).

In the Windows version, at least, it runs at a resolution of 480p minimum.

Nor is it that it asks so many requirements in Linux compared to Windows, this game is very light even if you put it at 1080p, since it lacks high quality textures and other modern effects that if other games have, not everything is resolution.

It's the magic of Linux. Obsolete equipment for years, they are still fully functional under Linux. When will people open their eyes. The average user blames that it is difficult to handle… .. and Windows 8 ???? That really is complicated and messy for everyone. I love the retro aesthetics of the game, it will be because I am older.

But this game is from the year of the cart, obviously it runs with that hardware, it is not Linux magic or anything, I even run it in Windows 7 with 1 GB of RAM and an Atom that is worse than many Pentium IV If I could run for example Metro Last Light on a Pentium IV there if you could say that Linux does magic.

Gnu does allow to exploit the potential of old PCs very well .. but if I remember correctly the video requirements of this game were 128mb minimum and 256 recommended, with a similar order of ram xD even a cell phone can run it at 1080p while playing minecraft in HD at the same time (?)

Hahahaha Of those hours mine are very few, when I bought the game as I did not play it much, I lent my account to a friend who did play every day but had the pirate game.

I must confess that many years ago I had a copy of cs 1.6 piratona: D, I remember that an anti cheat program had to be installed in win to be able to play on the servers protected against cheat or whatever it is called and that this program for linux was not . Does the steam counter bring the anti cheat program? Or do you have to buy it separately? Or does it not exist for Linux yet? or is that not necessary in steam?
PS: the truth is that 7- 11 dollars is a reasonable cost for a game

    1.    @Jlcmux said

I think you mean the Sxe-Injected. When you use STEAM it is not necessary to have it. And it still doesn't exist for linux. That's why I could never play it pirate D: haha

      Greetings.

Hello I wanted to know if by chance it was possible to juagr that I have a problem with the radeon ati hd 5450 it is not compatible with the linux kernel the last one and I have problems to juagr to counter strike zero conditioz and offensive is more I cannot play my name meredithszx from gran canaria spain age 23 and if you can help me my email is jodercualpongoo@hotmail.com I do not accept funny people, I have not warned any of that or strange things about people who believe that they know 4 things hackers are created hahaha, I also know a little bit about the topic, so be warned, Kedais, sorry, who could have offended a thousand kisses to all and hug I hope reply

        1.    anonymous said

I recommend that you use Manjaro Linux, the HD5450 (and all radeon) will not have problems with the latest Kernel and the proprietary drivers, since in Manjaro they give you the proprietary blobs for all the Kernels that are supported (Kernel 3.14 including) and all from the same official repos, nothing to add things from AUR or other sources of dubious quality.

      2.    rainbow_fly said

I think he refers to an Anti Cheat program (With a blue icon) that fulfilled the same function that Sxe injected later occupied (the latter takes off when the CS begins to be distributed only by steam and the "No-Steam" games appear)

You also make a mistake, the Sxe-Injected is necessary whether you have steam or not, you have the pirate or original game. If the server administrator uses it (The sxe-injected server if it exists in Gnu) then all free system players are supported, since there is no client outside of windows, in fact there is not even one for mac (which has a little more of gamer history than us).

Besides that the software does not work neither with Wine nor in a virtual machine and the developers are not interested in a client for other systems

It is one of the biggest problems that is having with all the games of the generation of mods of Half Life 1 and that in my opinion is one of the reasons why Steam did not take off so much for gnu / linux when we saw them arrive.

Basically you start the game and you can play in Lan, single or Online by hamachi, but as soon as you try to enter almost any of the servers (and this happens in all of Latin America, I don't know how things are going for the lords of the stars and stripes or the old continent) you enter and you get a message that you need the client, your screen goes dark and the server closes. Goodbye poof.

Steam brings VAC, you don't need to install anything other than the official client.

      1.    rainbow_fly said

If you want to access the servers that not only use VAC (those that use SXE for example) you need to install particular software that 99% are not present for systems other than windows.

These servers are almost 80% in Latin America

Are you still trying to play on linux? now in 2014 is that they can play a game 10 years ago this for windows, hahahaha what idiots

    1.    rainbow_fly said

But s left 4 dead 2 is only 5 years old
Dota 2, metro last light, system shock 2 are only 1 year old
      Natural Selection has 2
      Serious Sam is 3

And I'm not saying anything about the cataract of indie games that came out for Gnu / linux in recent times

But maybe this does not come to be a competition of «oh, my system has those games since I ate the snot»

Because if you are looking for that, I hope you never celebrate when they port those classic console and arcade games to windows, it would be somewhat ridiculous and hypocritical of you. At the time it was played on a platform, today there are better ones, we replaced the WHY (affectionately) with better systems

ps: Do not forget to pass the antivirus, pass the anti-malware, restart, defragment the disk, restart again, clean the registry, repair it, restart again, then repair the disk, restart, wait the 40 minutes for windows to «repair »With its own methodology the disk (generating new registry problems) and remember to save money to buy the next windows .. Because the standard support of win7 ends on January 13, 2015 and it will not be that an update of Microsoft suddenly disables the power on your pc.

The truth is that I have played this series of games a lot and the improvement from 1.6 to Counter Strike Source was quite noticeable. Have you tried launching more current games?

  12.   Gustavo said

I still play it on linux, the condition zero, because the cs1.6 closes about 10 minutes after starting it ...
