Steam will start selling apps on September 5

Valve has announced that its video game distribution platform, Steam, is not going to be dedicated simply to selling video games but it is also going to be in charge of distribute software. Turning Steam into a kind of AppStore for PC from September 5 of this year, allowing you to download applications for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Steam will offer its users the possibility of using the 'Steamworks' service, which consists of adding an easy download and installation system, automatic updates and cloud storage to the applications. This means that you can have all the files of various programs on different computers simply by connecting to your Steam account. The Steam Cloud service will be a new competition to services that already include cloud storage such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

As Mark Richardson recounted in the press release:

The 40 million players who frequent our platform are interested in more than just playing. They have told us that they would like to have software through Steam, so this expansion is the answer to their requests.

We do not yet know which applications will be the first to appear on Steam, but what Valve members have communicated has been that they will be programs that will span "from creativity to productivity." Surely, with this initiative Valve will be a direct competition to Microsoft and the application store that will include Windows 8.

It is undoubtedly great news that increases business possibilities for developers. And it is that the sale of applications through an online store is the present and future model in the distribution of applications. If we add to this the possibility offered by the mobile application with which we can perform remote downloads, etc ... we see that Steam will be successful.

In addition, we will be able to attend a possible price war as well as promotions in which certain applications will be more profitable to buy in one or another store.
