This time we bring you a guide of installation of the fresh out Fedora 18, the distribution sponsored by Red Hat that will not leave anyone indifferent. |
Pre-installation
Before you can install Fedora 18 you have to follow these 3 steps:
- Download the Fedora ISO image. On the Fedora page, you will have to choose the architecture and desktop environment of your choice. If you don't know what this is about, I recommend you read our guide on distributions, for an introduction.
- Burn the ISO image to a CD / DVD or a pendrive.
- Configure the BIOS so that it boots from the CD / DVD or from the pendrive, according to what you have chosen in the previous step.
Step-by-step installation
The bootloader will appear. Choose Start Fedora 18. After starting the system, the login screen will appear. Select the option Live System User.
Once logged in, click on the icon Install to Hard Drive:
The installation wizard will appear. The first thing to choose is the installation language. Choose Spanish:.
On the screen that follows you will be able to configure the date and time, the keyboard and the partitioning scheme of the hard disk. To do so, just click on each of these options. Its configuration is quite intuitive, except for the partitioning of the disk, which we will see in greater detail.
This is the hardest part: disk partitioning. Here are 2 ways to follow:
Click on the hard drive where you want to install the system and click the button Continue. In case you want to encrypt it, to obtain greater security, select the option Encrypt my data. This option is only recommended in cases of extreme necessity, since the resulting performance effects are not justified.
The disk partitioning wizard will start.
At this point, there are 2 options:
a) remove the old operating system and install. This is the easiest option: delete everything and install above. No need to heat your head about partitioning the disk or anything like that. In the new Fedora 18 installation wizard, this option is called Claim space.
The procedure to follow in this step is simply to select the partitions you want to erase, select Delete and then Claim space.
b) partition the disk manually. This step is optional. It is only recommended for intermediate or advanced users who know what this implies. Any wrong step can result in data loss on the disk. If you don't want to risk it, don't do it. In case you want to continue anyway, select the option Partition scheme configuration. Anaconda will suggest an "ideal" partition scheme, however it is possible to modify it by selecting the option I don't need help, let me customize the disk partitioning.
Generally speaking, my recommendation is to divide the disk into 3 partitions:
1.- Partition root. Where the system will be installed. You have to mount it in /. I recommend the EXT4 file format. The minimum size must be at least 5 gigs (2gb for the base system and the rest for the applications that you are going to install in the future). I repeat, this is the minimum size, not the ideal one (which can be 10/15 GB).
2.- Partition home. Where will all your documents be. You have to mount it in / home. I recommend the EXT4 file format. The size is a purely personal choice and depends exclusively on how much you are going to use it.
3.- Partition swap. Space reserved on the disk for swap memory (when you run out of RAM the system uses this disk space to "expand" it). This partition cannot be omitted and must exist yes or yes. The recommended size is: a) for partitions of 1gb or less, the swap should be double your RAM memory; b) for partitions of 2gb or more, the swap must be at least 1gb.
In the last step, it will ask you to set an administrator password.
Once done, the system installation will begin.
When the installation is finished, you will be able to enjoy your new system: Fedora 18.
Once everything is ready, you can reboot or continue testing the system.
Finally, reboot and remove the disk / pendrive.
