Tenacity, another fork born of Audacity's error of collecting data and that started on the wrong foot

Audacity's telemetry topic is giving a lot to talk about and it is that a few days ago we shared here on the blog the note of discontent from Audacity users upon discovering that the program was collecting user data and also upon noticing the publication of a privacy notice.

This generated a wave of criticism and negative comments towards Audacity and also towards Muse Group (who was he bought the intellectual property and trademarks related to Audacity) which also caused different groups of users to make the decision to create forks of the application, but eliminating telemetry.

Of the new forks that have been born we have already talked about one of them which is audacium which was created by a group of users from Sartox Free Software. In addition to eliminating dubious code that makes requests over the network (sending telemetry and bug reports, checking for updates), the Audacium project also points out among the goals of reworking the code base to facilitate understanding of the code and simplify participation in the development of newbies.

And now this time we are going to talk (and not with much joy) about another fork, which has as its name Tenacity, which recently kept the name "temporary-audacity" but later of internal voting by the members of the project I go to the name it already has.

So far everything seems to be going well, but the bad part of this fork is that during part of its process, its founder mentioned that he would be relieved of his position As maintainer of the project, this due to the constant harassment he suffered during the internal voting process that was carried out on the selection of the name of the project, which is a pretty unfortunate case And above all it leaves open source very badly off and that above all leaves more than one wondering if this project should be supported (which at least from me does not have it or this type of situation).

In his shared comments, the founder of the project mentioned that regarding the case that got out of hand and that he also feared reprisals and these would end in attacks on his person or family:

"I really thought a lot about this, and haven't slept in two days due to ongoing harassment from 4chan," stated cookiengineer in a post on the Tenacity GitHub issues page about 13 hours ago. “As the first people were literally coming to my place of life, where they knocked on my doors and windows to scare us, I hereby officially resign as maintainer of this project.

“My family's safety is worth more than an open source project. My address was discovered through a YouTube video where someone was posting my nickname combined with my real legal name (which was removed in the meantime due to my request). The incident happened today at 23:00 CEST [21:00 UTC], and the police took over this case '.

“It was an attempted murder with an illegal butterfly knife. Throughout the state of Germany, butterfly knives are considered an illegal weapon. There were three witnesses at the scene who saw the incident. They cut off my arm. On private property, which you have to physically break into in order to enter. '

Regarding the project, it is mentioned that Tenacity is planned to be developed as a clone of the Audacity codebase, free from changes that are questionable from the community's point of view. For example, the code will not have to send telemetry, crash reports, and other network activities. When making corrections in Tenacity, 8 developers have already joined, sent 10 Pull-queries and 35 proposals for changes.

Finally for those interested in the project, they can check the details and track the development In the following link.
