What sounds in our player? Part 2

En another post our partner Tina told us about music groups so I have decided to do the same with the music that I like.

Regular readers know that mine is the metal, but apart from metal I like some of the hard rock, some song of not metal y metalcore (which I do not consider metal), and even Chinese music y Japanese, although I am not very knowledgeable about this music.

First I will start by talking about the genre that I like the most, the progressive metal:

Progressive metal is a genre that combines metal with the amalgams and time shifts of the progressive rock. This subgenre emerged with groups such as Fates Warning o Crimson gloryThen I will talk about some of the groups that I like the most.

Dream Theater

Dream Theater is a progressive metal group from the US, originally it had the name Majesty, but then they changed it to Dream Theater.

It was founded in 1985 by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy, the three original members have remained in the group until Mike Portnoy left the group, being replaced by Mike Mangini.

Pagan's Mind

Pagan's Mind is a progressive metal group with some power metal influences from Norway. It was founded in 2000 from the group Sliverspoon, this same year they released their first album, Infinity Divine.

It has barely had line-up changes as it retains 4 of the 5 original members, as guitarist Thorstein Aaby has been replaced by Jørn Viggo Lofstad.

Symphony X

Symphony X is a group of progressive metal with influences of power metal and neoclassical metal from the USA. It was founded in 1994 by Michael Romeo.

That same year they recorded Symphony X, the group's first album and the only one with the singer Rod Tyler, who was replaced by Rusell Allen.

Kamelot

Kamelot is a progressive metal group with influences from US power metal and symphonic metal. It arises in 1991 thanks to Thomas Youngblood.

In 1994 they recorded Eternity with the discography Noise Records

Now I'll talk about him metal thrash:

Thrash metal is a subgenre of metal characterized by its speed and aggressiveness, several groups use guitars and basses with active pickups, since they have a lot of output.

One of the pioneering groups in this style is Overkill, although the best known are the Big 4: Metallica, megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax:

Panther

Pantera was a thrash metal group from the US, although they were glam metal until Cowboys From Hell. It was founded by brothers Darrell Abott and Vinnie Paul Abott in 1981.

He was active until the 2003 murder of Dimebag Darrell by the madman Nathan Gale.

never more

Nevermore is a group of thrash metal with progressive elements coming from the USA. He was born in 1991 from the ashes of Sanctuary as they were pressured to do grunge.

Nevermore is characterized by the use of 7-string guitars. Currently singer Warrel Dane is the only original member along with Jim Sheppard.

Slayer

Slayer is a US thrash metal group founded in 1981 by Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. Slayer has a compatriot of elav y KZKG ^ GaaraDave Lombard.

They have been accused of being satanic because of the theme of their lyrics.

We go to melodic death metal:

Melodic death metal emerged in Sweden and aims to combine the brutality of death metal with something more melodic. This subgenre makes use of the guttural voice and sometimes the clean voice. Pioneering groups are Dark Tranquility, At The Gates and In Flames until their Clayman album.

Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy is a melodic death metal group from Sweden and one of the few groups in the world that uses a guttural female voice.

It was founded in 1996 by Michael Amott and Johan Liiva. It was led by Johan Liiva until 2001 when he leaves and is replaced by Angela Gossow.

Children Of Bodom

Children Of Bodom is a Finnish melodic death metal group with influences from power metal, it was founded in 1993 by Alexi Laiho and Jaska Raatikainen.

At first they were called Inearthed, and after the name change Janne Wirman joined the group.

The group's name comes from a murder at Lake Bodom in the 60s.

We go to the extreme and start with the death metal:

Death metal derives from thrash metal. It is characterized by the use of guttural voices, guitars with low pitches, and songs with many changes.

This genre began to be created with the group Possessed, which began to use guttural voices.

Death

Death was a pioneering group in death metal, founded in the US by Chuck Schuldiner in 1983 and active until 2001. It was dissolved by the death of Chuck Schuldiner due to pneumonia associated with a glioma.

Within death metal possibly in my opinion they are the best.

More extreme still, the black metal:

Black metal is a highly criticized subgenre due to its characteristic anti-Christian lyrics and the Inner Circle. It is a genre that uses very fast guitars, throaty vocals and very fast drum rhythms. It arose in Norway.

I don't like this subgenre too much, but I can rescue a group from it.

Immortal

Immortal is a Norwegian black metal group founded in 1990 by Abbath, Armagedda and Demonaz. They are not considered satanic unlike many black metal groups, as Immortal's lyrics are usually about winter.

It arose from the roots of the Amputation group.

We're going to adulterate black metal so ... symphonic black metal:

Symphonic black metal adds the use of clean vocals to pure black metal, just like adding keyboards and even real orchestras

Dimmu borgir

Dimmu Borgir is supposedly a Norwegian symphonic black metal group founded by Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv in 1993.

They have been widely criticized for modifying their style towards something lighter. Dimmu Borgir means dark fortress in Norwegian.

For me, Dimmu Borgir is symphonic metal with a black metal voice and image, nothing more. Of this group I only like 4 albums, the Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropy, in which the symphonic roll is smaller than in the other records, the Spiritual Black Dimensions, also here there are fewer symphonies and I would say that it is more gross than the previous one mentioned, the In sorte diaboli , although it sometimes lacks atmosphere and Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, which is also gross, although with more melodic parts, these could be considered black metal, although not pure, but symphonic.

Still it seems like a good symphonic metal group to me.

But since not everything is brutality, we are going to talk about another subgenre, the gothic metal:

Gothic metal is a subgenre that is characterized by using a clean female voice and a male voice, which can be clean or guttural. The theme of the lyrics is usually somewhat sad or romantic.

This subgenre is not much for me either, but I can rescue an album and some songs

Sirenia

Sirenia is a Norwegian gothic metal group founded in 2001 by Morten Veland. It was formed thanks to the departure of Morten Veland from Tristania, his previous group.

Sirenia has been characterized by having a different singer on each album until Ailyn entered permanently.

The records that I rescue from the little I have heard of Sirenia are The 13th Floor, An Elixir for Existence and The Enigma Of Life.

Theater Of Tragedy

Theater Of Tragedy was a Norwegian gothic metal group founded in 1993. They disbanded in 2010 after 17 years for each to get on with their lives.

It is formed by the departure of Hein Frode Hansen from the Phobia group.

From here I rescue the song Cassandra, although I hardly know the group.

Lacuna coil

Lacuna Coil is an Italian gothic metal group founded by Marco Coti Zelati and Andrea Ferro under the name Sleep Of Right, later they were renamed Ethereal and when it was already taken they changed the name to Lacuna Coil, which means Empty Spiral.

From here I rescue Trip the darkness y Heaven's A Lie.

Let's move on to something quiet, the symphonic metal

As its name suggests, symphonic metal adds orchestral lines to metal and epic choruses, many times these groups have played with orchestras.

Since the symphonic roll is not my thing, I rescued some songs

Epica

Epica is a symphonic metal group with gothic touches from Holland.

It was formed by Mark Jansen under the name Sahara Dust, which was later changed to Epica.

Let's go to the dragons and the story, the powermetal:

Power metal is characterized by its speed and technique, both on keyboard and guitar. It has a characteristic use of double bass drums and its lyrics are based on epic things and history

It's another genre that doesn't suit me but I rescue another group

Dark moor

Dark Moor is a power metal group with symphonic and neoclassical touches from Spain. It was founded by Enrik Garcia in 1993.

The latest albums are somewhat more progressive without neglecting power metal.

Now we will talk about the typical, the heavy metal:

Heavy metal is a musical genre that arises from hard rock but also includes elements of other styles such as blues, psychedelic rock, etc.

It emerged in the late 60s with Black Sabbath.

As the genre is not much for me, we will talk about the group that I like the most within the genre

God

Dio was a heavy metal group founded by Ronnie James Dio when he came out of Black Sabbath. It dissolves by its death from stomach cancer.

On the cover of the album Holy Driver we can see the typical metal horns, which apparently was a ritual that his grandmother used to drive away spirits.

We go to glam metal:

Glam metal is a style that is characterized by its image. The lyrics are about sex, drugs, etc. Because of the image and its sound similar to hard rock, many do not consider it metal, but I do.

Mötley Crüe

Mötley Crüe is a glam metal group from the USA. It was formed by Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx. It has had several line-up changes but currently the original line-up is active.

The name comes from the modified name of the beer they drank.

But not everything is metal, so let's talk about two music groups:

Slipknot

Slipknot is a nu metal group formed in Iowa in 1995. It contains the bestiality of 9 members in the group.

This group is characterized by the use of masks during concerts.

From here I rescue Before I Forget, the only song that I like of nu metal.

As I was saying before, I do not consider nu metal metal, rather it is rap with distorted guitars and basses tuned to low pitches (Slipknot tunes them to B). Due to the rap influences, the use of samples and dj's, many people do not consider nu metal metal, I include myself.

As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is a US metalcore group formed in 2000. It was formed by Tim Lambesis upon leaving Society's Finest.

It was consolidated as a group in 2001.

From here we rescue Within destruction, the only song that I like about metalcore, although it is more trashy.

I don't consider metalcore metal because it's more related to hardcore punk than metal, apart from the fact that it uses crying voices. The genre is pure image and commercial music, made solely and exclusively to sell.

Let's move on to hard-rock:

Steve Vai

Steve Vai is a guitarist from the USA, his style would define it as a technical hard rock.

He is the inventor of the Floyd Rose technique contrary to the dive bomb, that is to say, instead of loosening the strings we tighten them (I don't remember the name of the technique).

He was a student of Joe Satriani

Van Halen

Van Halen is a group of hard rock of the USA founded by Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen.

At first they were called Mammoth and because another group was using it it was changed to Van Halen.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen is the inventor of the dive bomb, thumb harmonics, and tapping.

Talk about something else

Japanese music

Japanese music is characterized by the use of pentatonic scales and by its enigmatic sound.

Instruments used in Japanese music are the shamisen, the koto, the shakuhachi, and the taiko.

Many of these instruments were imported from China but have undergone modifications to become something more typical

Chinese music

Like the Japanese, it uses the pentantonic scales but it is not the same

Instruments used are the gong, the pipe, the xiao and the sanxian.

I leave many groups in the pipeline like our partner Tina but if not the post would be very long and boring

I am left with the image that opens the post and a couple of bands that I had not heard oO
Haven't you heard Pain of Salvation or Riverside?
Although the first one I think is a bit heavier to listen to, and the second one is a bit more prog rock, both seem very good bands to me.
I also recommend listening to a band that has long since disintegrated: Dreams of Sanity

    1.    Courage said

Riverside I don't know but Pain Of Salvation I don't like

    2.    Courage said

    1.    Courage said

Thanks for the lists because many may be interested.

The AC / DC thing, well I don't like it because I don't like rock and less AC / DC

  6.   yukiteru said

I would add Tristania, Ozzy Osborurne, POD, KISS, Creed, Korn, AC / DC, Avenged Sevenfold, White Snake, Riverside, Elane, Arkona (the Russians), Origa, Ilaria Graziano, Elfonia, Eluvietie, Galneryus, Drowning Pool, Foo Fighters, Killswitch Engage ... in short, a very long list to continue writing.

    1.    Courage said

      No, no, let's see.

I clearly say in the post that I don't like nu metal and metalcore. Then the gothic does not suit me much, just a little something.

And AC / DC, I don't like, I don't like rock and less AC / DC

      1.    yukiteru said

Well, in the list there is everything.

Arkona for example is Folk Metal, Ozzy is heavy metal, Origa is a Russian vocalist who sings in Russian, Japanese, English and Latin, so you have to choose.

        1.    Courage said

No, but about nu and metalcore I only like one song, that doesn't mean that I like the group or the genre.

Ozzy I haven't heard it, I've heard more of Black Sabbath, which I also like, but I like Dio better.

Japanese and Chinese music I prefer instrumental music, more than that with a voice

    2.    VaryHeavy said

And the Power Metal section has remained ultra short for me, and we are left with bands of the stature of Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Rhapsody or Dragonland in the inkwell ... and in the Death section I have also noticed the absence of Amon Amarth, as well as Kreator's in Thrash, or White Rata and Scorpions in Hard Rock… unforgivable xD

      1.    Courage said

I just don't like power metal except for Dark Moor.

What I have put are groups that I like and groups in which we can save something.

Amon Amarth barely know them and Scorpions I do, but I have not fallen into putting them

  7.   proper said

Epica and Tarja Turunen rlz !!

    1.    Courage said

Well, the truth is I have put the photo of Tarja Turunen because I think it is cute, because I am not into power metal.

Then they say that I do not like girls and others, you had to take advantage hahaha

      1.    proper said

hehehe, in that case Simone Simons is cuter 😉

        1.    Courage said

          1.    Ozzar said

Simone is cute but she is not to my taste, she makes me very artificial.

The one that I do love is Cristina Scabbia, the vocalist of Lacuna Coil. That Italian is a beauty ...

      2.    VaryHeavy said

But… Nightwish is more Symphonic Metal than Power Metal…

        1.    Courage said

          Symphonic Power Metal

      3.    Gabriel said

To say that Nightwish / Tarja, Tarja / Tarja is Power Metal, is to say that only Ubuntu is Linux.

        1.    Courage said

Well, it does make me power metal, listen to The Kinslayer or Wishmaster to see if it's power metal or not.

The drums and melodies are power metal, symphonic, but power metal

          1.    VaryHeavy said

I still disagree, that there are some faster songs does not mean that their style is Power Metal. There are not many double bass drums, nor fast guitar riffs, nor vertiginous solos ... compare it with Rhapsody, with Dragonland, or with Helloween, and tell me how Nightwish's style is similar to theirs.

          2.    Courage said

Fuck is not a very pure power not even within the symphonic, but a little power has

    2.    Ozzar said

Van Halen and Motley Crue alongside Immortal and Dimmu? What a strange combination!… XD

Of the bands you mention I go to Lacuna Coil, Kamelot, Theater of Tragedy; and something, Sirenia and Epica. The others neither go nor come to me, and in the case of Dream, I cannot bear his excessive virtuosity and unnecessary brilliance ...

On the other hand, I didn't think you were going to DJ listing nu metal bands - which are not "metal" for you -, or single songs of that genre, especially when you seemed to be so "true Taliban", but hey, this is the " I was admitted ”, so nothing happens.

    Greetings.

    1.    Courage said

I just like Before I Forget of all nu metal, because I don't like that subgenre at all, it's rap with guitars.

Go to put a dj in a group supposedly made of metal ... ¬¬

    2.    Courage said

And from Dimmu only that album, because otherwise they seem posers to me

  10.   Ozzar said

Man, you only like a song of a whole genre and an album by a band, it is better not to include them and list other groups that you really like more ... I mean, right?

    1.    Courage said

Well… Yes, but I wanted to include a lot, since I did it I made it complete (and I got a little bit with the posers of elav and KZKG ^ Gaara haha). Some did not want to put it to avoid flames between two bands.

  11.   Marco said

In symphonic rock, which is my favorite, you didn't mention Within Temptation

Well from what you have put we coincide in some bands, for example:
    - Dream Theater
    - Sympony X
    - Panther
    - Death
    - Epic
    - Steve Vai

Before I listened to black metal, things like:
Immortal and Dimmu borgir, It no longer seems very boring to me, now I'm more involved with progressive insductrial, technical rock, NeoProg, progressive psychedelic rock and things like that.

Courage I recommend Meshuggah, Cynic, Aghora, Altera Enigma (they are Chinese that make instrumental progressivo), Blotted Science (you are going to hit hard with these), Exivios, Kiko laureiro, Porcupine Three, Ocenazice, Riverside .. ufff now is what There are good bands .. I always like to look for new things and see what I get with.

    Well give him regards 😉

    1.    Courage said

Agora I have them listed in a list out there. Meshuggah… They are talked about for 8-string guitars. And Kiko Loureiro ... it's power, that doesn't suit me

    1.    elav <° Linux said

I like him Rock & roll in general, but I am sorry to say that there are few groups that I know or have heard from those mentioned above. First, it is true that I am not a fan of this type of genre to the point of listening to anything. I can listen to a Pantera song or two, but by the third time I already have a headache. That constant sound of guitar and drum comes at a time when it upsets me. Also, what the heck do your lyrics convey?

I prefer music where the instruments come together in harmony with the singer's voice (if there is a vowel). I like the wave of Nirvana, AC DC, Weezer, Remy Zero, VonRay, LifeHouse, Audioslave, to give more current examples, but I prefer (and by far) groups or singers of yesteryear such as: Elvis, Supertramp, The Beatles, Aerosmith , Chicago, Chevelle, Dire Straits, REM, Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra, Guns N 'Roses, Alice Copper, Foreigner, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and a long etcetera, music heard only by carcamales like me. 😛

Among my favorite musical genres are:
      - Blues & Soul
      - jazz
      - New Age
      - Chill Out
      - Ambient
      - Lounge
      - Trip hop

Even other more Caribbean genres such as Reggae (Bob Marley), La Trova (many Cuban groups), Alternative Fusion (X Alfonso) .. But I listen to everything, as long as for my personal taste it has rhythm, harmony and transmits some kind of sensation either the music or the lyrics of the song.

      1.    Courage said

What the heck do your lyrics convey?

Come on, don't screw me with this, especially being reggaeton like you are.

Look at Cementery Gates' translation to see if it conveys something or not:

        http://www.musica.com/letras.asp?letra=879874

If you are going to say something like that, at least present evidence, and also ask what do the reggaeton lyrics convey?

        But I listen to everything

LOL seriously? Do you want me to take out the chat in which you only named me nu metal groups?

  16.   william_oops said

Courage, good post. According to you, Nu metal and metal core metal have nothing. Neither does glam metal (here I disagree with you)

An appreciation: RJ Dio already had a solo career before joining Sabbath and originally comes from a band called Rainbow.
Regarding the heavy-metal subgenre, I mention for those who do not understand this, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as the main exponents.

I understand that it was not your intention to make an extensive list of sub-genres since you did not mention sub-genres such as industrial-metal (Ministry, White Zombie, Fear Factory, etc) or Doom-Metal my favorite sub-genre (I suggest studying to My Dying Bride, the old stages of Paradise Lost and Anathema, Candlemass, Esoteric, Thergothon) that incredibly contains about 4 or 5 well distinguishable sub-genres within it (proto, drone, death-doom, funeral, etc)
Many consider Black Sabbath to be the first doom band (proto-doom to be more precise) and once the genre is known it is not difficult to understand why. I recommend a new proto-doom band called Iron Man.

There are bands within metal that are difficult to classify as is the excellent Opeth that mixes things of death, progressive and emotive.
Similar happens with Katatonia. Bands that start with one sound, go through another, go back to their origins and then release an album that has all the sounds of their career in the same album ...

Well, I'm not boring anymore ... Greetings.

    1.    VaryHeavy said

Well of course!! Maiden and Judas !! How could you leave them out? :OR

      1.    Courage said

I don't like Maiden and Judas seem harder rock to me

    2.    Courage said

I thought after Rainbow he went to Black Sabbath.

I don't consider industrial metal metal and I don't like it at all, it seems more like electronic with guitars.

Industrial metal is metal with techno, like ramstein, deathstars, gothminister etc. I think you have to listen to everything, against more different music you listen to more ideas you will come up with, but it happens to you like many people who always compose the same, ahem ac dc for example.

I've heard Rammstein and they seem to me electro with guitars.

You can't listen to everything due to the fact that it is impossible for me to like all genres.

And yes, you must always compose the same, a group cannot be sold, like In Flames or want to cover all genres because:

          1: It's impossible
2: It is from having no personality

    The greats of La Guiarra
    Michael Angelo Batio
    John 5
    Yngwie malmsteen
    Paul gilbert

Paul Gilbert has not heard almost anything although the guy is the host, MAB is even better but I have hardly heard anything

Eric Johnson, I don't like that kind of music, just like John 5, Yngwie should be investigated

Jimmy Page seems like a very overrated package to me, besides, if there is a group that I cannot stand it is Led Zeppelin

Hello, Courage. Honestly, I haven't read your article; I've only looked at it because I don't like metal. However, it doesn't bother me either, much less that he's here.

The problem is that now, other authors might want to do a third part talking about "reggaeton" and other genres of music (if you can call it that) that, unlike metal, do bother and repel me.

Well, no way, if that happens, you will be the only one to blame. Heh heh heh.

After reading all the comments, I want to tell you one thing.

The list is of groups that I like, not the exponents of each subgenre of metal or rock.

It is that I see the same comments repeated and I was not going to put groups that I do not like.

To taste the colors, the music and the women.

Why do you argue about tastes? If that belongs to each?

    Relax !!!

It just annoys me that they say that metal letters don't make sense. You can say that you do not like them, but from there to that they do not make sense there is an abyss

Of course for women tastes, I think that the music most similar to the one you have named that I have heard is Pink Floyd
      since I have other tastes
