The grinch attacks Visual Studio Code and steals Christmas

Grinch Visual Studio code

I would have liked the title to be different, since today we live in a society that is basically always alarmed and defensive, where if you attack me I attack you, where if my ideals or beliefs are not supported or respected by others, those people discriminate against me, they are retrograded and they are wrong ... But in the end I decided it was the one that has.

Being more direct, a few days ago I found a note on the net that caught my attention and What I wrote in the previous paragraph immediately came to mind. Even though this is so, I just continued my surfing the web. A few days later I saw that the note became a point of discussion and above all criticism, as it generated a great impact on the Internet users who read about it.

The note I am talking about is referring to what Microsoft was forced to apologize and modify a small change in your open source editor, "Visual Studio Code". For those who are users of this editor and always have their editor updated, they will have noticed this small change, in which Microsoft shares its Christmas spirit with others and I put a "Christmas hat" in the lower left.

Up to this point, many will think and well, this has to do, all good, everything is normal, but it was not like that ... as an annoying person (@ Christian-Schiffer) on Github opened a thread showing his discontent with the "Christmas hat" that the Visual Studio Code developers placed on the program interface.

@ Christian-Schiffer's comment was as follows:

The Santa hat for vscode experts and the push of religion is very offensive to me, moreover, Christmas has cost millions of Jews their lives over the centuries, but even if that wasn't the case, pushing religious symbols as part of a product update is completely unacceptable ...

At this point many options are generated in this regard and even many would think, that this person would simply ignore it or apply a classic automated response of "thanks for commenting, we are working on it ..."

But the thing was not like that, since this I generate something unprecedented and left many users simply amazed as Microsoft apologized and not only that since also replaced the image with a snowflake, after which a storm of outrage rose in the Visual Studio Code bug tracking system that Microsoft gave in to the demand of a troll or fanatic, despite the fact that, in the modern world, Santa Claus has nothing to do with religion.

Neither the Grinch nor Jack would think of such a thing. Well, if we were to talk about some other symbol like swastika, the thing would be different, but a simple "Christmas hat" ...

With that a heated discussion broke out in which supporters of various religious beliefs were united, as well as adherents and opponents of "Easter eggs" in the code. Complaints began to appear that taking off the Santa Claus hat and making changes due to the opinion of a social justice fighter (SJW) was perceived as an insult. Some tried to push the situation to the point of absurdity, mentioning that writing the code in English can be perceived as imposing Western imperialism and the snowflake suggests racial differences.

Since many comments clearly violated the code of conduct Microsoft, access to the system bug tracking temporarily closed and messages cleaned up.

Finally, this can impact other developments where possibly to avoid this type of problems about beliefs, religion and ideals, it would be best to remain neutral or what else do you think developers should do before this, simply ignore messages of dislike, invite them to use another option if you do not like what is done, etc.

I am glad that this happened in the name of an excessive morality that floods all media. It is time to stop and think.

The use of the English language as a universal language is imperialist and discriminatory, since there are alternatives such as Esperanto, it is totally incredible that the extortion of imposing a language is accepted that makes it necessary to spend thousands of euros in academies and courses abroad.

You have to be very careful with the unnameable.

It is completely absurd that they have given their arm to twist, letting people put the icon they want would be enough, or launching an official package that changes to a Christmas theme, the other: Santa has nothing to do with religion , perhaps its supposed origin, but it is an icon so globalized that it no longer has anything to do with it
