The new version of antiX 17.3 arrives with new improvements

Few days ago the developers behind the antiX project, announced the availability of a new version of this distribution Linux for low-resource computers.

How will they know antiX is a custom Linux distribution based on Debian. It provides an exceptionally easy-to-use version of Linux, which is easily adapted for Windows users.

Being derived from Debian gives Antix a vast library of applications that can be installed easily using Debian's apt-get package manager statement

Antix is ​​a compact Linux distribution, which takes up little space both in memory and on disk.

This system offers users "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for older computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a lightweight, yet fully functional and flexible operating system for beginners and experienced Linux users.

It should run on most computers, ranging from 256MB PIII systems with pre-configured change to the latest and most powerful boxes.

256MB of RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. The installer requires a minimum hard disk size of 2,7 GB.

AntiX can also be used as a bootable recovery CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

New version of antiX 17.3

As mentioned at the beginning, a new version of this distribution was recently released, reaching its AntiX 17.3 version, which includes the new Linux kernel fixes.

With this new release which is primarily an anti-17.2 'Helen Keller' release update, The priority of this update is to offer users an updated Kernel to mitigate some of the main security problems that were unveiled in recent weeks, of which we can mention L1TF, Foreshadow, Meltdown and Specter.

In addition to the update, it also adds some bug fixes, updated translations and especially the update of the system packages.

The main change that can be highlighted in AntiX 17.3 is that now the system offers options for those users who want to use LUK encryption on the root, home and swap partition (SWAP) already on installation.

As mentioned the new Linux Kernel that was integrated in the distribution in order to solve the security errors L1TF, Foreshadow, Meltdown, Specter, is Linux Kernel 4.9.146 fixed for these exploits.

AntiX 17.3 is based on the Debian 9.6 branch with which all the packages of the distribution were updated on this version of Debian.

One of the applications worth mentioning is that AntiX 17.3 received version 60.4 of the Firefox browser.

Regarding application removals, we found that PulseAudio and Pavucontrol were removed in this version of the distribution.

Finally, what can be mentioned about the applications is that Newsboat replaces Newsbeute in this new release.

And not forgetting that some languages ​​have been added to the live boot F2 menu.

How to get Antix 17.3?

If you are not a user of the distribution and want to use it on your computer or test it in a virtual machine.

You can obtain the image of the system, you only have to go to the official website of the project where you can download the image in its download section.

At the end of your download you can use Etcher to save the image to a pendrive and thus boot your system from a USB.

You can perform a system update from your terminal, you just have to open one on your system and execute the following commands:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
