A couple of weeks ago, here on the blog we shared with you the news about the new version of PlayOnLinux 5 (a version that had been awaited for many years) since this software had remained at version 4.2 for a long time.
With that, many of us thought that this application had been forgotten and the only support that could be found was in its forum , since nothing more was known about new versions.
Now a little over 2 months of such news, a new one arrives and it is that apparently its developers have not decided to jump to version 5 for now.
Well, they have just announced that the launch of the PlayOnLinux 4.3 project is now available.
With which they let us know a new version of this software which was already necessary to have the update.
New version of PlayOnLinux 4.3
Regarding the features implemented in this new release, we can highlight that the Wine plugin is being developed to organize the launch of popular Windows games.
With this the developers intend to provide a graphical interface that automates the configuration of the Wine environment and simplifies the installation of the games.
The project's code is written in bash and Python, and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. The 5.0 test branch was rewritten in Java and is being developed as part of the Phoenicis project.
Phoenicis is a completely rewritten piece of software that aims to present all the resources of PlayOnLinux 3 and 4 (also known as Arietis).
This new platform is decentralized, based on Git, and improves the POL scripting mechanism. The current version of PlayOnLinux 5.0 Alpha supports around 135 different games.
PlayOnLinux 4.3 improves compatibility with high pixel density (HiDPI) displays and ensures compatibility with Wine's automatic build infrastructure (winebuild) developed for the Phoenicis project (PlayOnLinux 5).
The new Winebuild uses Docker, is written in Python, and is not tied to specific operating systems. The Wine build service used in PlayOnLinux 4 has been deprecated.
For those who are interested in being able to install this new version of PlayOnLinux, they should follow the steps that we share below.
How to install PlayOnLinux 4.3 on different Linux distributions?
If they are users of Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint or any system derived from these, we can obtain the application with the help of a deb package.
Before starting the installation process, we must enable an architecture and download some necessary packages for this.
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
The packages that must be installed are those of the latest stable version of Wine, which can be installed directly by typing:
sudo apt-get install wine
Now you'll need to go to the project's official website and download this package. Or, if you prefer, you can do it from the terminal with the following command:
wget https://www.playonlinux.com/script_files/PlayOnLinux/4.3.3/PlayOnLinux_4.3.3.deb -O pol.deb
Once the download is done, you can install the package with your preferred package manager or from the terminal with the following command:
sudo dpkg -i pol.deb
Now, for those who are users of Arch Linux, Manjaro Linux, Antergos, or any Arch Linux derivative system, we can install the application directly from the Arch Linux repositories with the following command:
sudo pacman -Syu playonlinux
For those who are users of distributions that support RPM packages, such as RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, openSUSE, and other distributions, the new version has not yet been packaged in RPM format.
Therefore, you will have to wait for this to be completed . You can check the following link , and as soon as it is available, download and install it with the following command.
sudo rpm -i playonlinux*.rpm
For the rest of the Linux distributions, you should look for the package in your distribution software repositories and verify if the package corresponds to the new version.
Otherwise, they will have to wait or compile the package by downloading the following.
They must unzip the downloaded file and inside the folder they must open a terminal positioned there and type:
./playonlinux
