The next generation of cybercriminals

Very good to everyone, a title more than suggestive, and I want to start with this little video that I saw a long time ago, one of those gems that make you distrust technology and give you goose bumps.

Despite its harmless appearance, this video is certainly something that all of us as IT related people must fear and know about. But let's review a few details first.

Mario

The author of the video tells us the story of the player who has managed to beat that level of the well-known Super Mario World game. In the process he explains that said player is not human, rather a computer program that has learn the game process on your own.

Neuroevolution

This is the process that Mar.io has followed from knowing absolutely nothing about the game to successfully completing the level. This process emulates human brains and generates a neural network. This network can be seen in the upper right part of Mar.io and is the one that is generated after a long sequence of attempts and errors.

Result

After 24 hours of neural evolution, Mar.io has been able to successfully complete the level, this due to a series of generations that have learned that the way forward is to the right, that there are things that can hurt Mar.io and You can avoid them with commands like jump and so on.

It's all in the numbers

If you have seen the entire video you will know that there is a diagram in which a blue line is shown (4:06). This chart shows the fitness achieved in each generation. Fitness is a result obtained from a function that takes, among other things, the distance and time it takes for Mar.io to die. As you can see, there are points where it stalls in its evolution, but eventually it finds the solution and continues to evolve. After 32 generations of Mar.ios the goal of completing the level is achieved.

What does it have to do with security?

Many will be asking by now, but I think the answer is more than obvious, let's change a bit of context to Mar.io, let's suppose that instead of playing its harmless game, we give it a computer with mmm ... Kali Linux?

Kali Linux

Every good IT professional should know this name, just as Ubuntu stands for desktop computers and the names Red Hat and SUSE big companies that revolve around Linux. The first thing that often comes to mind when it comes to computer security is Kali Linux.

Simplify pentesting

For those of us who have played with the distro a bit, we know that Kali greatly simplifies the pentesting steps, since it gives us a complete suite of tools that we can start using both from its live environment and by installing on a hard drive. Some of these tools are installed manually, they will tell me more than one, but if we look at it a bit simplistically, with what we have pre-installed we are more than prepared for a «normal» pentesting.

Pentesting

This is the process that a security analyst performs, some defensively, but if you are in Kali, probably offensively. Throughout a pentesting, the analyst makes a recognition of the target, finds possible attack vectors, carries out targeted attacks in environments that are as "controlled" as possible, and after a long effort generates a detailed report of the entire process and points out possible failures which can have a system / software / team / person.

mario pentester

Suppose for a second that Mar.io decides to dedicate his life to security analysis, he does not sleep, he does not eat, he does not play, he only requires time to process things and numbers to analyze his results. Let's imagine what will happen after a few months of studying Kali Linux. With a little time you will learn to use nmap, maybe later you will be interested in trying metasploit, and who knows, maybe over time it will generate its own program to make things more efficient. This reminds me a lot of the Facebook AI program that decided to create its own negotiating language because English was not very "efficient" (and no, it wasn't Esperanto either in case you're wondering 😛).

The future of security

Let's imagine now for a moment that later there will only be Mar.ios working in security, some attacking, others defending, but that would no longer matter. Why? Well, because if we have both sides fighting at that level, without sleeping, without eating, without anything ... what could a human do to be at their height? Let's remember Google's AI who was able to beat the best Go player in what is supposed to be the most complicated game on the planet for a machine :).

This brings us to the corporate world, in which pentesters will no longer be needed, neither to audit nor to defend, and large companies will have servers dedicated to the continuous analysis of their programs and networks.

Should I continue my career in security?

Well, this is something a bit complicated to answer 🙂 if we follow the same premise for any field, we are going to see that 90% of future jobs will be or could be done by little Mar.ios, from psychology, through law and medicine, until we finally get to software, I say finally because the point at which a program is able to modify itself, that will be the end point of our control over the programs, they will improve themselves and then they will be uncontrollable. It sounds scary I know 🙂 but let me dream a bit 😛

Focusing on the subject again, whether or not it is worth learning how to do this, I think so and not. It is worth it if you are really going to get fully into the subject, and you are going to investigate and learn things that go beyond the mere fact of repeating a process a thousand times hoping to obtain the same result.

This applies to both pentesters and developers, and system administrators. Anyone who only knows how to use one tool will be easily replaced by a Mar.io in the future. Those who, on the other hand, can design tools (true hackers: P) will be the ones who train and improve the little Mar.ios, they will not have the future assured, but as long as they are better than the programs, they will be able to bring bread to the table 🙂

Reflection

Well, until now it will be for today, thanks for reading and I would like to ask you a favor. I know that many read without commenting on it, and it is true that I already owe them several topics to write or continue, but it never hurts a little feedback to know if there are doubts or not, if you can comment on something else or not, yes you have a substantial contribution to the text, or whatever comes to mind 🙂 This way you motivate me to keep writing and at the same time give me new ideas for other articles. Regards.

    Apocalyptic future ...
    Hello Chris!
There are many technologies that are coming, surprising and / or scary. Right now many people are crazy about getting cryptocurrencies.
Chris, from your sysadmin perspective, what potential does the blockchain have beyond cryptocurrencies? I have read comments that this technology will reduce the use of servers. Would this mainly affect the use of Linux on servers?
    Good post, thanks!

    1.    ChrisADR said

      Hi Mart, thanks for sharing.

Well, I don't handle cryptocurrencies, essentially because I don't handle a lot of money today either 😛 But from what I know the blockchain has tremendous potential for society. First of all there is the irrefutable nature of the transactions, in a global environment where everyone knows EVERYTHING that is transferred or transmitted, it is extremely difficult to do "hidden" things, and the irreversible record makes the event history able to show many events.

I also understand that they eliminate the annoying third-party system to which we are sadly enslaved. Let's just think for a moment, if I didn't have to depend on each entity to do what they want with my stuff, it would be amazing! The biggest concern, however, that arises from this is that not everyone is prepared for such responsibility, and much could be the damage that arises from a "hack" to people who cannot control a cell phone efficiently.

This seems to me like one of those waves of popularity, you can catch it before it explodes, or you can catch it when it is falling, but I believe that this will continue to grow for a long time, it will unleash its full potential in the following years, and at that time we will see if financial institutions are going to be able to cope with it with their so "new" fintech. This is undoubtedly a hot topic for the following years 🙂

As for the servers, quite the opposite! The beauty of servers is that we can all access one, with our simple computers we can start working this chain and mining system, it is vital that the servers keep up with the flow of information that would run if only cryptocurrencies were used. Ultimately, only GNU / Linux and UNIX would rise to the challenge (sorry for windows server lovers).

Definitely the one who can get a powerful server to generate cryptocurrencies, or who can have a large number of nodes in the future will be capable of many things, I am thinking of getting many Raspberries to start using them as a mining network 😛 but I have to wait still to get a job and money for that 😛

Thank you very much for bringing it to the table, regards

        Hello
On the blockchain, I think the idea is very good: a distributed database that cannot be altered, unless you have the majority of nodes on the network.

But I don't think he has much of a future beyond serving as a "notary."

It is an ultra-inefficient system with regard to capacity, flexibility and speed, and therefore I only see a future for it in very specific environments, such as for interbank money transfer.

The money that the banks exchange between them does not need instant transfers, being able to wait several minutes for the confirmation of each transaction, but it gives the system the confidence and security that a service like this requires.
The bad thing too is that a system like this one, for internal use among banks, would necessarily have few nodes (a few thousand at most), making it possible, if you have the best mathematical, statistical and computer experts on your payroll, and with an immense fortune, one of the big banks will be able to manipulate the network, introducing a few thousand nodes.

Total, on the one hand, a blockchain needs to be gigantic to be secure, and when it is gigantic it becomes extremely slow (and we are talking about the treatment of a few bytes, which is what each transaction occupies!).

Regarding what you said about not depending on entities… at this moment we are free to send the money we want wherever we want… paying a commission.
But in the blockchain we also have to pay commission.
Perhaps the revolution in this aspect will come the day that a global blockchain network is created, widely supported by thousands of nodes, BUT that does not suffer from the distortion of currency speculation. A network in which the cryptocurrency used has a value with respect to the uro, or the fixed dollar. At this moment I would not dare to send 1 million EUROS per bitcoin, because between buying bitcons, making the transfer and the recipient sells, 100.000 euros can be lost along the way due to market fluctuation.

        All the best

Hello Jordi, just a note to your comment 🙂

Color displays were also ultra-inefficient in capacity, flexibility, and speed no more than 20 years ago, however look at us today 🙂 4k 8k, 16k, 32k… 😛

It is more with this of quantum processors, we are about to enter a new level of information processing speed, who knows, perhaps in about 10 years the large infrastructures of national banks around the world will be equal to the power of a cell phone of the future, as happens today with our smartphones and the supercomputers that Kennedy had in his government 🙂 Then the blockchain would be one node per person, which would become something quite interesting without a doubt 🙂

do you want to see some uses of the blockchain? storj.io, sia.tech or golem.network

    3.    KRA said

According to ChrisADR, regarding the fact that the servers will disappear, to complement ChrisADR I will say that due to the greater lack of the blockchain they will not disappear, rather they will multiply because with each transaction the blockchain grows more and therefore requires of more space, currently the Bitcoin blockchain weighs 166 / Gb using Bitcoin-Core (bitcoin-qt) as a wallet.

Regarding what ChrisADR says about servers and Raspberries to mine cryptocurrencies, let me tell you that this is a waste of time and money, currently you will not be able to obtain an amount of BTC, ETH that is profitable because currently dedicated solutions are used ( ASIC miners), I currently have an AntMiner S9 and I don't earn a big deal (0.00140114 (BTC)) per month being in a pool with hundreds of miners.

If you mine little-known cryptocurrencies like Monero, you may have a chance, but these are almost worthless.

      1.    ChrisADR said

Hello Kra 🙂 always with accurate comments. Maybe I should have been a little more explicit about my network of raspberries for mining 😛 the desire is not expressly mining cryptocurrencies, the desire is to break the algorithms that work in mining 🙂 as I read somewhere

The only 100% secure code is the one that has not been written

And as a good user of technology, I am 90% sure that it has bugs, and finding them is vital, but since I cannot do it in a real network, then to create my own work mini-network 🙂 a mere intellectual entertainment for me 🙂 such Maybe this clears up the doubts.

Your article reminded me of only one thing. TRON at its finest as long as the shows end up serving the users, which would be very welcome and also terrifying if it becomes something like the Terminator movie. Remember that the movie Skynet is a program that reached consciousness and became an AI. What I would like is to learn a little about cyber security and if you have used firejail, I would love for you to do a small tutorial to do a good sandboxing that would be excellent for the security issue and avoid an escalation of privileges if your space has been committed. From what I have read, spying and data theft by internet services is infuriating

    1.    ChrisADR said

Hello Jolst2botl, because it certainly has an air to that type of movies, the real question would be how a quasi-perfect logical system (AI) would find a logical reason to serve a being as chaotic as man 🙂 I consider that under simple logic, a computer would consider it absurd, since they do not understand the factor of free will. But who knows 🙂 maybe something out there allows us to experiment without taking such great risks. Thank you very much for commenting, happy holidays.

PS: as for firejail, I have not yet fully entered the subject, a resource that I find quite interesting is the Gentoo hardening handbook, where among other things you can learn tricks to sandbox a server that allows mitigating the maximum the risks of privilege escalation, as it is in English I would have to translate the content, but I will try to give myself some time since it is something that we also apply to the process of installing programs in Gentoo, it is necessary to perform a proper sandboxing to avoid risks with the programs to be installed.

    Hello,
Well, I'm excited about the new era of artificial intelligence ...

Because as you say, there may come a time when an AI does practically all the work. And what does that mean? Well, like 80 or 90% of the jobs will be lost.

At first it may seem scary, and in fact I think we are going to have a time of incredible poverty and inequality, since this will come gradually, only carried out by large corporations that will have the AI and the necessary infrastructure to execute them, but in the long run it is clear that humanity cannot survive with only 10% of people working and getting paid, and the rest not.

There will be an ultra-profound change, in which property and money will lose meaning, since those who will work will be machines, and humans will dedicate ourselves to doing nothing, or doing everything ...
In other words, humans can stop working to survive. The machines will provide us with the items and services we need, and we will all charge a universal income to live as we want.

Of course, as has always happened, there will be many people who will want to continue doing things, striving, studying, researching ... making us go further, like the wealthy people of the Renaissance (or of any era), who could dedicate their lives to banal things like astronomy, mathematics, physics, painting, music. Centuries ago it was normal for people to survive in a bad way so as not to die of hunger, and only the wealthy could dedicate themselves to the arts and sciences.

I think the end will be a world close to Star Treck, where humans do things not to survive, but to want to form a team, to do things that stimulate us. And if you don't want to, then you don't have to do anything. Instruct your AI to always have your food ready for you and dedicate yourself to playing sports, meeting friends, traveling ...

I believe that universal income will be the beginning of this world, but that we will have no choice (unless we ban AI, of course ...)

    1.    ChrisADR said

Hello Jordi, thank you very much for sharing, it is certainly a very promising future if it is fulfilled as you say, it is also true that in a world where machines do everything, man will have to find new meanings to his existence (such as wall -e or matrix 😛) but certainly a big change is approaching, probably in schools the "virtual" identity will begin to deepen more than the "real" one, and many other possibilities.

Certainly there will also be a time when large companies can and will have to move the world forward, since obtaining the equipment will be extremely expensive, but as with all technology, with the passage of time and new discoveries, the material and the processes are becoming more efficient and therefore less expensive. Otherwise we would not have the facility of having 1,2 or 5 laptops in a house, something that some 30 years ago would have been unthinkable.

And perhaps the rent also loses meaning, since why would we need money if everything is already available to everyone? well, curious ideas without a doubt, but I think we will have to wait a bit to know how they develop

      Happy Holidays 🙂

Well, it seems that we should reflect a little more on the subject.

Hello maRc, it is true that capitalism destroys us to some extent, but more than corporations as such, they are the people who run them, and this is something that will have to be dealt with for a long time (probably as long as there are human beings on this planet).

The interesting thing for me would be to see what will happen when an AI is able to understand concepts such as corruption, lies, selfishness ... will it adopt them for itself? Or in your correct logic will you try to eliminate them? both sides of the coin look peculiarly complex if you ask me, which makes it even more interesting 🙂

Very good post, the people who get involved in technology because we are aware of this type of technology, but what happens with the people who use the Internet in a leisure and / or entertainment way. Inadvertently they send a large amount of information to the servers of Google or Facebook. Many think that the fact that we use two-step security is crazy but the truth is that the information that is published today will be forever on the Internet and they can track people's habits. In my opinion we are already living in the times of Skynet without people noticing and it is in the hands of many people dedicated to technology to control this and see that the knowledge used is not used for bad purposes.

Hello, the article is very current, but in my opinion the answer to the question Should I continue my career in security? Without a doubt, it must be: Of course, learning is fundamental and must be a desirable and precious asset of the human being, in addition, as professionals, it is our duty to learn and continue investigating not only in security matters but in all areas of human endeavor We must also generate new approaches if we want to be at the forefront as a race in the coming years and not simply be part of the ELOI (The Time Machine by HG Wells).
We have to bear in mind that AI by 24-7-365 processing capacity is totally superior to human capacity, but humans can always contribute ideas that lead to disruptive movements, paradigm shifts, philosophies and revolutions; events before which we can use the same AI for our own benefit, it seems to me that the great achievement here is the advances in biotechnologies, such as hot DNA modification with CRISPR or implantation of direct knowledge in the brain in the best style of the movie DEMOLITION MAN that is to say, use the speed that AI has and apply it to our being, ...
As for the phobia of AI, I must say that it is too late, there is no going back this is our reality, it is the vehicle in which humanity has taken a new journey, therefore it remains to compete for superiority

    1.    ChrisADR said

Certainly Javier, it is necessary to always keep in constant study, research and updating. Sadly, there are sectors and / or people who don't see it that way, and they get used to doing "minimal" jobs to keep things running. This reminds me of an IT manager I knew who worked in the police force and was in charge of a huge network. Unfortunately he thought that working 2 hours a week remotely without really improving things was enough to earn his x000.00 soles per month, sad reality, but there are people like that, and thanks to those people we have big problems on a social level.

AI is definitely a good thing, and it is showing it, but it pushes us to make a deep reflection not only on our ways of proceeding and this reflection should be carried out soon, since the moment in which technology will begin to be made is not far off. more independent of man.

Thank you very much for your comment, greetings 🙂

What would happen if the software was improved for a task but was filled with a bug, how can it improve itself after that?
It's a weird question but could it happen?

Hi HO2Gi, thank you for such an interesting question. The process of evolution is based on genes and generations, practically what has happened to all living species on the planet. An atypical genome develops, in the beginning it could be considered as a "bug" in the normal system, but with time the same evolution will accept or discard this singularity. As an example we have the horses, they used to have 5 fingers instead of hooves, eventually a few began to be born with atrophied fingers and these survived longer than their counterparts without "bugs", evolution accepted the change and now they are as they are. Another example, giraffes and their necks, well, many examples exist.

Returning to the question, a "bug" can be productive or destructive, that is why many developers say: "You can see it as a bug or as a feature". The center is in the results, if said "bug" generates better results than the lack of it, evolution will probably be in charge of improving it over time, if not it will discard it. That's the beauty of evolution 🙂

I hope I have been able to answer your question, greetings and happy new year.

Suuuper interesting! My purpose for this year 2018 that begins shortly, is to get into the world of programming. Being very young, almost like a mistake, I was an assistant in a course on Basic programming for the TI 99 / A… prehistory !!!!
Very in a dream, I remember some things that, for my young age, caught my attention. This year I will look at this 44 year old HD!
My interesting is your approach to the subject.

this makes me think of a skynet like the terminator, where the AI thinks that humans are no longer worthy of using them and we are condemned to a new stone age, I think I'm being a bit evil.
In summary, good article, greetings from Venezuela
