The phones smart based on Ubuntu will be available to customers in October 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal, quoting Mark shuttleworth, Canonical's founder, in a presentation given in New York last Tuesday. |
The Wall Street Journal reports that Shuttleworth has said the new phone operating system will be available in "two major geographic markets in October" but declined to say where those markets were and declined to identify phone companies or partner companies at the launch.
The article, which mentions Shuttleworth as Canonical's CEO - he stepped down from the CEO position in December 2009 - provides a schedule for the launch of the phone, which is much more advanced than the Shuttleworth originally gave the January 2 of this year, when he put the launch of an Ubuntu-based phone on the 2014 agenda.
However, at the time Shuttleworth was referring to a device launch in the last quarter of 2013, but this was a reference to the launch of Ubuntu for Android, the Android extension that was announced in February 2012 and that grants phones Android a Unity-based desktop interface when the phone is docked with a screen, mouse, and keyboard. The truth is that at the moment there is no device that works with Ubuntu for Android.
The only thing that is known for sure is that the Ubuntu Phone OS source code will be available at the end of February or March, along with an installation image for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
