Interesting Tips and Add-ons for Firefox

Throughout these years of DesdeLinux We have published endless articles related to Firefox. Tips, configurations, addons, templates ... a lot is what we have talked about, but Firefox is renewed, updated, tips, tricks or suggestions must also be kept up to date.

Coincidentally, a few days ago an acquaintance of mine told me that sometimes, when I accessed sites with multiple flash files or too many scripts, the browser seemed to stop responding as it should. Surely it has happened to several of us, it happened to me once with an online Poker site, this person happened with some online casino sites, or this could also happen sometimes with Facebook, when we scroll down excessively on the timeline 🙂

Here I will talk about several tips or tricks that we can put into practice so that our Firefox works better, and if not better ... it works exactly as we want.

Blocking flash files and only allowing the desired ones

Flashblock is an almost indispensable plugin nowadays if your internet is not one of the most, fast ... Many are the websites that discriminately incorporate any animation with flash or video, which our browser begins to load (at least the preview of it) so it consumes precious bandwidth for us.

Plugin: FlashBlock

Installing the FlashBlock add-on will block all these videos or flash animations by default, obviously allowing us to reproduce exactly the one we want and no more.

This not only saves us bandwidth, but also ... prevents our browser from 'suffering' with those sites that abuse this type of multimedia content.

Going into the about: config

Each application has its visible options, those that serve us to activate, deactivate or simply customize the application in question or its functions, well, the about: config of Firefox are those hidden options, not so visible through which we can configure Firefox even more.

To access the about: config from Firefox just put in the address bar about: config and press Enter, something like this will appear:about-config

Now the good begins ...

Select the entire URL of the page we are on with just one click

If we want to copy the URL of the page we are on, we must double click on the address bar, which will select the entire URL and then, Ctrl + C to copy. This can be changed to be with a single click instead of double click.

Once inside the about: config, in the filter bar we put browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll and we double click on it, so that it is put in True at the end on the right.

The end result will be that we will have something like:

browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll | set by user | yes / no | True

See the source code of the page in our favorite editor

How many times have we seen the source code of a page and Firefox opens it in another window? … Not always, because I want him to show me the code with Kate, my favorite text editor…. as I do?

Well, in the filter bar of the about: config we look for the following and double-click it:

view_source.editor.external

In such a way that we have a True to the right of the above.

With this we establish that our code editor / viewer will be external, now we will specify the path of the editor (kate, for example) to use:

view_source.editor.path

We double click on this that I put, a small window will appear with a box where to write ... we put / usr / bin / kate

It would look like this:

about-config1

Avoid redirection in Google search results

The times that we open Google to search for something in the day are several, each time we click on a result that shows us ... we can see in the URL that it has a large part of it related to Google. That is, instead of going directly to the site that appeared in the search results, it directs us to 'something' in Google and then to the desired page.

When you have a good bandwidth there is not much difference, but when like me, you have almost non-existent bandwidth ... those seconds of waiting because of the Google redirect are valuable.

To avoid this we must install the following Addon or Complement in Firefox: Google not tracking URLs

Disable timeout when installing an addon or add-on

When we want to install a new addon or add-on, Firefox makes us wait several seconds before we can click the Install button. By changing the following we will no longer have to wait.

security.dialog_enable_delay | 0

That said, we change 2000 (or whatever number is set) in security.dialog_enable_delay towards zero (0).

Activate "Save and close" when we close Firefox

Many times we have multiple tabs open in the browser but we need to close it. How to do to save those tabs that we have open so that later, when we open it, they open automatically?

To do this we look for the following in the about: config and put it as True

browser.showQuitWarning | true

Show PDF files instead of downloading them directly

Firefox comes with a built-in PDF viewer, but what if I always want to download PDFs and not open them with Firefox?

For this we must put True in the field pdfjs.disabled

pdfjs.disabled | true

Firefox permission settings in about: permissions

Whether or not Firefox uses our microphone? … Whether or not our geographic location shares? ... this and much more can be specified for a certain site or for all of them, we only have to open in one tab: about: permissions

It will show us something like this:

about-permissions

Firefox spell checker in Spanish

Some time ago we explained how to install the Spanish language for the spell checker of our Firefox, I think it is more prudent to leave the link to the original article, as it is not our intention to make this an extremely long post:

Addon: ImgLikeOpera

The Opera browser has many things that I honestly find excellent, one of them is the management it does of the images. In other words, it allows us to specify with quick clicks whether or not the images are shown when we browse the web, whether it will show us (the browser) only those that are already in the cache, etc.

To bring this to Firefox there is the plugin ImgLikeOpera

imglikeopera

When you have a slow bandwidth or ... well, very very very slow, this plugin is a lifesaver 🙂

Save and Open EPUB files with Firefox

I open digital book files (PDF, EPUB, FB2, etc) with Okular, but I know people who don't want to quit Firefox to read other content. It is because of them that there are extensions for Firefox that allow you to open EPUB files with the browser.

Also, although some prefer to simply save the pages in their bookmarks, others in MHT, others in HTML or PDF ... there are those who like to save a good tutorial in EPUB format, to read on the tablet or something like that, for them there is also a add-on for Firefox to save pages in this format.

Read EPUB in Firefox: EPUBReader

Save as EPUB in Firefox: Save as EPUB

Set a timeout for scripts or sites that never finish loading

Elav told us about this several months ago. There is a plugin that allows us to set a timeout in Firefox (maximum time) loading. In other words, when we are opening a site and it stays loading ... and loading ... and loading, like this until almost infinity, doesn't this bother you?

It can be due to a bad script, connection limitations, bandwidth or simply because we are working offline.

To prevent this from happening there kill spinners

How to work with Firefox only with the keyboard?

Every application has its keyboard shortcuts, Firefox is no exception. Here are the most popular keyboard shortcuts for Firefox:

End?

Obviously you can still talk ... there are hundreds of accessories that make our life simpler, Speeddial is one of them, personally I find it indispensable, but as has happened many times with our articles, the editor lays the foundations with a post that is interesting, then the users complement it, they do it much better with their comments 😉

What complement do you use that you consider essential for you?

Good compilation KZKG ^ Gaara 🙂

There are tricks for advanced users, not so advanced and basic. What I do observe is that many standard functions are unknown even to old users (without going into add-ons). I will name some functions that perhaps are not sufficiently used:

    - Smart folders. Much more practical for me than the thumbnails in the new tab. Staying in the same tab, I access the order that suits me. http://wp.me/pobUI-Cj

    - Panorama. Indispensable when I have a lot of tabs open and I also have to find some. http://mzl.la/KrLdDR

    - Make backups of the profile and then export or import them. We write about: support in the address bar–> Profile directory–> Open directory–> copy that folder. We can migrate the profile to any other operating system.

Although Firefox has many extensions, almost as many as our imagination reaches. The versatility of the browser allows many configurations, some time ago I made a compilation of those that I did myself http://wp.me/pobUI-1N5

For the basics, find help with problems etc. the SUMO section has an extensive compilation of articles. https://support.mozilla.org/es/

When I always read these types of articles, I end up wondering if loading and reloading Firefox with so many add-ons that are recommended to us on one site and on another will not be at the end achieving just the opposite, slowing down navigation ...

Quick translator, how to add to Midori or firefox ?.

in midori I don't know, but in firefox

In many cases, yes, especially in extensions that require the use of flash such as FoxTab. I have seen impossible profiles for compulsively installing add-ons. Luckily for two years there is the "Restore Firefox" button and it removes all trash.

The Post is very good! ... I think many of you like Midore, how should it be configured?

One of the essential addons in firefox, which I first met in chrome, but over time it was ported to various browsers: OneTab. Send all browser tabs to an html file on your computer, reducing the memory you need to have all the tabs open all the time.

if you change the value of
    browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll
I also recommend you change the value of
    browser.urlbar.doubleClickSelectsAll

Greetings, very good post. I am a faithful user of Firefox, I will immediately apply this; many things you say are true and I did not think that there was a solution for example for that infinite recharge.

Yes there are many things that can be done in firefox and it can always be adapted to each user or need.

Only with the add-ons you can take advantage of many things, I for example use downloadhelper to download videos and more, downthemall to download large files and take advantage of the speed of the network connection, febe to backup data, history and firefox configuration, and a long etc.

Very good tricks of the about.config that some functions did not know.

Indispensable for me is the textarea cache, if I write in a forum or blog and for whatever reason the connection drops or I change the page by accident it saves me in a cache what I write in the forms, it has saved me many times
