New Distros 2024 – 12: Bazzite, Sleeper OS and AlterOS
Again, and to catch up on our current series of posts called “Top of new GNU/Linux Distros”, this month of August 2024 We offer you this twelfth publication (Part 12) where we will address more innovative and interesting alternatives for free and open operating systems based on Linux and BSD. And this time, the 3 selected are: Bazzite, Sleeper OS and AlterOS.

Bazzite

- Primary use: According to its developers, it is ideal for users who are passionate about games and modern, robust operating systems with a solid and striking visual interface.
- Actual state: It is an operating system in full development, but at the same time, with great solidity and support because, currently, it is based on the recent Fedora 38 Distro, and more specifically on Universal Blue, an OCI base image of Fedora. Therefore, it has very good compatibility with modern and varied hardware, such as Microsoft Surface devices. And thanks to having a good variety of pre-installed key drivers.
- brief description: It is an operating system that offers a custom image built on Fedora Atomic Desktops with the goal of bringing the best of Linux gaming to all possible device types, including handheld computers such as the Steam Deck and others like it.
Sleeper OS

- Desktops (DE/WM): Trinity, KDE Plasma and GNOME.
- Primary use: According to its developers, it is ideal for all types of Linux users, mainly those who have computers with few HW resources (CPU, RAM and Disk) or who are very old.
- Actual state: It is a very recent operating system, since it has been created for just over a year and has barely reached its first stable version (1.0).
- brief description: It is an operating system that offers an optimized antiX experience, along with a convenient set of essential pre-installed software tools. In addition, other fundamentals of multimedia design (Inkscape and Krita), and others such as the Firefox web browser as the default. Therefore, it focuses on Minimize bloatware and focus on the quality of the included SW over its quantity.
AlterOS

- Base: Independent.

- Latest released versions: Version number unknown, but updated during 2024.
- Desktops (DE/WM): XFCE, XFCE Mini, KDE Plasma, GNOME, Txt Tech (own desktop) and Xall (Mix of XFCE/GNOME and Mate).
- Primary use: According to its developers, it is a state-of-the-art Russian operating system based on Linux, which is developed by the ALMI Partner company in order to be used by anyone on any computer anywhere. Both using well-known free and open software tools and other proprietary ones, such as the AlterOffice office suite.
- Actual state: It is a robust, non-free and well-commercially supported operating system, designed for user workplaces, especially in Russia. Since, it takes into account the specific aspects of the work of commercial and government organizations in that country.
- brief description: It is a server operating system with minimum consumption requirements (64-bit CPU, 512 MB of RAM, 3 GB of free disk space and a screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels). Which allows you to run the operating system on even less powerful and not so modern devices, such as home computers, desktops and laptops.
