More than 2 months ago we launched our last publication (seventh) of the series “Top new GNU/Linux Distros”, where we presented some of the most innovative and interesting alternatives for free and open operating systems based on Linux. Therefore, today we will address 3 new calls: Minki's Crappy Linux, Ubix Linux and NethSecurity. In order to complete the known ones during the month of March of this year 2024, within the waiting list of the well-known DistroWatch website. Which await their fair recognition within said website, to then be disseminated as modern, complete and stable projects.

And so, with this «Top of new GNU/Linux Distros to be recognized in 2024 – Part 8 », we hope to continue promoting knowledge (dissemination and promotion) of the multiple free and open projects of GNU / Linux distributions. Which continue to be created and developed constantly throughout the Linuxverse.

  • Primary use: Ideal for daily use on very old 32-bit computers (hard drives and USB drives) with very little RAM memory.
  • Actual state: It is a fairly recent project that offers a fully operational Linux-based operating system capable of performing multiple basic and essential tasks on computers as old as one with a 486 MHz Intel 66 processor with 4 MB of RAM.
  • brief description: It is a lightweight, compact and functional operating system, which includes a web browser, an email client, a chat client, a simple office suite, a Unix-compatible development suite, and a multimedia player. But also, some graphic and terminal games, plus some Amiga emulators and for ZX Spectrum, Apple II, Gameboy, NES and Master System. It also includes a CPM emulator.

  • Primary use: Ideal for daily use on modern work computers with vast hardware resources, and for use by computer science students and IT professionals in the field of data analysis.
  • Actual state: It is a quite interesting project, which is reflected in the very meaning of its name (Ubix). Which means Ubix means Universal Business Intelligence Computer System. And whose objective is the acquisition, transformation, analysis and presentation of data.
  • brief description: It is a stable and highly functional operating system, which offers a small and portable data laboratory, but at the same time very complete and versatile. Additionally, it is ideal for portability on a USB storage drive for live operation under efficient resource management. What makes it an ideal operating system with an ideal set of tools for learning the basics of data analysis and artificial intelligence on small and medium-sized data sets.

NethSecurity

NethSecurity

  • Base: OpenWrt.

  • Latest released versions: NethSecurity 8-23.05.3-ns.0.0.5-rc2 dated April 2024.
  • Desktops (DE/WM): Web.
  • Primary use: It is an operating system Designed to be easy to install and configure, making it a good option for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). And also, for business organizations that need a good suite of security services quickly and easily.
  • Actual state: This new and interesting project is an ideal successor to the old NethServer 7 operating system (Firewall Suite) and is also a subsequent reconstruction based on OpenWrt.
  • brief description: It is a stable and highly functional operating system, which offers a unified threat management (UTM) solution. Which, in turn, provides a complete set of security features, including firewall, content filtering, and deep packet inspection (DPI) using Netifyd. And it also includes the Dedalo hotspot, OpenVPN, and an optional remote controller.

Other future Distros

For this month of March 2024, within DistroWatch only known in this category or status to the NixBSD Distro. Which is basically an unofficial Fork of NixOS, but with a FreeBSD kernel.

NixBSD is an attempt to create a reproducible and declarable BSD, based on NixOS. Although much of this work could theoretically be copied to build other BSDs, so far all work has focused on building a FreeBSD distribution. About NixBSD on GitHub
