Today, February 12, 2025, as has become customary month after month, we offer you a new publication in our current series of publications called “Top New GNU/Linux Distros”, which corresponds to the second publication (part 02) of this current year. And in it, we will address 3 more new and interesting alternatives of free and open distributions (operating systems). Which already appear in the DistroWatch waitlist for last January 2025 and these are the following: Bluefin, Malbian and Shebang. Although, we will also take the opportunity to mention other, equally interesting ones.

Let us remember that *Linux, *BSD Distros and other independent ones, addressed in this series of publications, They await their fair recognition within the DistroWatch website, to then be disseminated as modern, complete, stable and successful projects. Therefore, with this new contribution, we hope to continue promoting the knowledge (dissemination and promotion), development and use of these and other New and interesting free and open source GNU/Linux distribution projects.

  • General description: According to its sole developer (0xChange), Malbian is a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution intended for malware analysis and reverse engineering. It focuses on the execution of custom scripts that facilitate the display of useful information in a Tmux session. And this information goes from Internet connectivity, LAN IP address, destination IP address or domain, to VPN connection status and host connectivity status. In addition, it makes use of a lightweight and flexible desktop like XFCE, which, provides a familiar user interface, although alternatively, it also offers an ISO with the DWM window manager for greater simplicity and lightness. Y aBoth editions come with some general tools for analyzing malware samples and simple system utilities to make the system more reliable and usable.

Malbian was created as an alternative to Remnux, which is based on Ubuntu. The good thing about Malbian is that it has ISOs to run live or install to disk at any time, while Remnux has OVA files that restrict the hypervisors where you can run it..

Finally, it is important to note that, Shebang comes with the ability to play most popular media formats including but not limited to MP3, DVD playback, and Adobe Flash. And for this past January 2025, it is important to note that the only additional distribution that we have been able to find within the known Linuxverse (mainly, the DistroWatch Os.Watch and FossTorrents websites) is Melawy Linux. Which is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, but with the Calamares installer, and a custom design that includes the rEFInd bootloader, the Plymouth loading screen, the SDDM login manager, and the KDE Plasma Desktop, among many other useful and interesting additions. And whose development is stable and well active, as stated in your SourceForge website.
