Top New Distros 2025 – 07: Shanios and Royal Linux
Today, July 16, 2025, as has become customary month after month, we offer you a new publication in our current series of publications called “Top New GNU/Linux Distros”, which is the seventh publication (part 07) of this year. In it, we'll cover two more innovative, interesting, and little-known alternatives to free and open source distributions (operating systems) within the vast Linux universe, the names of which are: Shanios and Royal Linux.
And remember that, many of the *Linux, *BSD Distros and other independent ones, addressed in this series of publications, They await their fair recognition within the DistroWatch website, to then be distributed as modern, complete, stable, and successful projects within it. While we sometimes mention some that are not even on the DistroWatch Waiting List, as is the case today with Royal LinuxSo, if you're interested in learning about new, free and open source alternatives to operating systems, or other lesser-known ones, we invite you to continue reading this post.

- Latest version available: Shanios 2025.07.14, released on July 14, 2025.
- Base: Arch.
- País de origen: India.
- Supported architectures: x86_64.
- Desktops (DE/WM): GNOME and KDE Plasma.
- General description: According to its developers, this Arch-based Linux distribution project is designed to Offer a modern, robust, and immutable operating system that any type of user can completely trust. That is, it should be ideal for modern computers with vast hardware resources, fail-safe during any update, no matter how large or sensitive; and offer a high level of reliability through a revolutionary immutable architecture. Another important fact about this project is related to its developer. It was created by Shrinivas Vishnu Kumbhar, who is the co-founder of Garuda Linux and an experienced DevOps engineer of Indian origin.
“Shanios is an operating system capable of Maintain two full copies of the system and switch between them atomically, thereby eliminating the possibility of broken updates and keeping the user experience simple and intuitive. For more details, It employs a blue-green deployment strategy using Btrfs subvolumes. This enables the system to deliver atomic updates via a custom deployment tool (shani-deploy), maintaining system integrity with read-only root partitions and providing enhanced security via AppArmor profiles, firewalld configurations, and full-disk encryption. Finally, it is important to note that since its first release in March 2025, Shanios has proven that unchanging reliability and ease of use are not mutually exclusive.". About Shanios

Other new distros, on and off the DistroWatch Waitlist
And as of today, when we write this publication (16/07/2025), I take this opportunity to mention and describe A noble and interesting project, which is still little known within the Linuxverse (mainly within the websites of «DistroWatch OS.Watch and FossTorrents»), and whose name is Royal Linux.
Royal Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian 12, developed to offer a lightweight, fast, and robust system. Featuring a custom LXDE environment, modern drivers, and proprietary tools, Royal Linux is ideal for developers, gamers, and free community enthusiasts looking for maximum efficiency and customization. Royal Linux: Featured Features
Among its highlights we can mention some such as the availability of ISO files for architectures I386, AMD64 y AMD64 AHS (Advanced Hardware Support), it doesn't include bloatware, it's fast and efficient from the first boot, it offers constant updates and an active community, offers a good level of privacy and full control (no telemetry)It's compatible with both older computers and those with cutting-edge hardware, and it's easy to customize. For this reason, its creator considers it ideal for productive and creative environments, and excellent for use in areas such as education, development, and gaming.
Royal Linux: Negative point
And as a strange or negative point (for me), is that It uses a custom Linux kernel from a distro project that has received a lot of negative reviews., both for the Distro itself and for its Creator. Therefore, My recommendation would be to replace said third-party custom Linux kernel, by one who does not insert into said project, any negative history or perception of this new and interesting project of the Linuxverse.
Royal Linux is designed for users who value performance, efficiency, and complete system control. Royal Linux replaces systemd with SysVinit, achieving greater transparency and lower resource consumption. Browse repository on SourceForge
