Turpial: the Venezuelan Twitter client

Turpial

There are variety of Twitter clients on Linuxas Gwibber o hotot, but "Creole like arepa”Comes to us Turpial, a Twitter client programmed in the language "Python”, Made here in Venezuela. It is enough functional and lightweight. If you are interested, keep reading 😉

This is an article I wrote on my Tumblr a while ago. But, it seems to me that it does not hurt to have it around here a little more updated.

For starters, Turpial can be used in the “extended"(with multiple columns both) or in the form "normal"(a both). The tweets show us:

  • Username
  • Tweet content
  • Date and Time of publication
  • Way by which it was published (eg via Twitter for Android)

In the Right upper corner there is a button with an arrow, with which you reload tweets. In the upper zone, yeah No. have enabled the "extended mode"(Preferences> extended) they will see three buttons: Timeline, Mentions y DMs respectively. Then, in the lower zone, there are 7 buttons, I describe them below:

  1. Timeline, Mentions and Direct Messages.
  2. Profile, Favorites and Searches.
  3. Follow: enter a username to follow.
  4. Update status.
  5. Upload image.
  6. Preferences: enable extended mode, tweet update time, etc.
  7. About Turpial: credits, version ...

To Retweet, reply, open links, etc. we must give right click about some tweet, and the options will appear. Turpial shows us that "small does not have to be bad"(this applies both with the application and with the real bird xD) and surely more than one will want to try it.

Turpial is already in the version 1.6.9 stable, and it is developing the version 2.0 (is in state Alpha). According to the publication on its official page, the following are expected improvements:

  • Improved URL detection
  • Viewing profiles and images directly from the application
  • Advanced options in the preferences menu
  • Improved appearance and performance (using webkit)
  • Broadcasting of messages
  • Dialogue for sending DMs
  • Support for the undo function (Ctrl + Z)
  • Show images in real size when clicking on a Tweet or profile
  • Redesigned dialog for username autocompletion
  • Possibility of using as many columns as the user wants
  • Integration with Ubuntu (in 1.6 the integration is not so good that let's say ...)
  • Support for using a public TL in a column
  • Support for undoing ReTweets
  • Implementation of the functions to report tweets and users
  • Redesign of the function to mute users

However, currently has some bugs:

  • Notification preferences don't work yet
  • Proxy support has not been implemented
  • After creating a new account it is not immediately displayed in the menu (you must restart)
  • The function to resize columns has not been implemented
  • Main window sometimes hangs when resizing
  • Greater consumption of resources (almost 50MB more than version 1.6.9)
  • Every time you start the application you must wait for your friends to load (followers and people you follow)
  • The account authorization dialog needs a total redesign
  • To follow a user you must enter their profile and click the "Follow" button (you can't follow it from a Tweet or anything similar)

They can Download the trial versions in the Turpial repository. If you want to review the code, it is available in the Git from the Turpial team. Any comments and bug reports are welcome.

Undoubtedly the next version will give Turpial a 360 degree turn, perhaps even so it cannot be compared with other clients such as Hotot, Polly, etc. But he will definitely be my client of choice for a long time. What do you think? Is the little one good? What Twitter clients do you use? I am all ears 😉

    According!!!

I use it on my Squeeze Gnome 2.30

In my Wheezy KDE I use Choqok, in KDE it is second to none, and I would dare to say the best of Linux in general 😉

    Salu2

I explained myself wrong or you did not understand well ..

I was referring to Choqok being second to none in KDE and not Turpial

Turpial is for Gnome and XFCE 😉

Turpial it's great, I've talked about it myself several times on the blog, but compared to hotot it's very, very limited.

For those of us who don't need so many options, it's perfect ^^ Once the new version comes out, I'll have it in Debian anyway!

I liked the article you wrote, but the most that caught my attention was the visual style of your operating system, from what I see it seems Debian, although I do not recognize the theme you use on the desktop, I already have the icons, could you help me and give me the information on what theme do you use on your linux?

    1.    auroszx said

With pleasure. It's Debian Testing with Xfce, Zukitwo application theme and Greybird windows (although Zukitwo brings one for windows that looks very good muy). The same theme Zukitwo brings some images for the panel, which give it the transparent effect (you must place them in the panel settings), and I put two panels. The icons are Faenza and the screen background is one of the ones you can find in this post: https://blog.desdelinux.net/pack-de-wallpapers-relajantes-de-varias-distros/

I have had a couple of contacts with the developer of turpial, "satan" they tell him xD and in fact he wants to improve a lot in his version 2.0 and increase the pace of development but he is the only developer and he cannot give himself the death by this service.

I am reading the code and learning, I want to develop a little for turpial.

Regarding Chokok, sorry to KDE lovers but although it is good and very powerful, it is not the best; I do not consider it as such xD

      1.    auroszx said

nano: I'm glad you want to collaborate with Turpial 😀 I didn't know that santanás (Wil Álvarez) was the only developer of Turpial oo I also want to resume my learning in Python to help ... or at least help with the English translation (I don't know what it will be so good ...)

very good customer, the only drawback I see is that the font is small and in settings there is no option to increase the size, otherwise it is very good
