Twitter, new member of the Linux family

A pleasant news is circulating today on the network.

Twitter (that it is not necessary to explain who he is or what he does) has decided to join the Linux Foundation. The Twitter OpenSource Director (chris aniszczyk) said:

Linux and its ability to be modified is fundamental to our technological infrastructure. By joining the Linux Foundation we can support an organization that is important to us, and collaborate with a community that advances Linux as fast as we do with Twitter.

Aniszczyk could give us more details in the next LinuxCon, although personally I am much more motivated about what Twitter can contribute to Linux in technical matters, than the legal or other details about its incorporation (I mean, I look forward to seeing the contributions from Twitter, I am not very curious as to why they joined now hehe).

Beside Twitter there are MANY other greats that belong to the Linux Foundation.

Here the most important members:

These are the Gold members:

And then a really large number make up the Silver Members, among which is Twitter:

And I clarify, in this list of silver members are included greats such as:

  • Adobe
  • ARM
  • Canonical
  • Dell
  • DreamWorks (yes, CIA animation movies)
  • Epson
  • LG
  • Nvidia
  • RedHat
  • Siemens
  • Toshiba
  • VMWare
  • Yahoo!

Anyway, that is good news 😀

Twitter enters the Linux Foundation, but it is closing its API to everyone, isn't it contradictory?

no, it is not contradictory, twitter is a company, and like all companies it seeks its own benefit, what a mania to demand for something that is free like twitter.

        Totally agree.

Well, I can still access your API.
Anyway, it is not the same to support Linux as freedoms, if you do not notice that Oracle (which is nowhere from closing MySQL) and Nvidia are.
By the way, I can still access the Twitter API, if they close API accounts in a way it will be because there are those who use it for little 'good' purposes

As they said around there, it is not contradictory, but coincidentally I thought that when I found out ...

JOJO aobe is on the linux foundation haha. And RedHat is a silver member. I don't quite understand what is the location of the silver, gold or platinum, donations, contributions to the linux foundation based on?

    1.    Azazel said

I understand that it depends on the economic contribution that this makes to the foundation and maybe some improvements that they add. A, by the way I think that a few months ago Samsung joined the platinum list.

The one who donates the most money goes up the ranking 😉

    Just like Vicky says !!!

In other words, what does Oracle do as platinum and OpenSUSE and RedHat are not there (of which I'm not a big fan, I clarify) ... and well, I don't know if there should be a Debian and Arch organization, which are only the ones that come to me to mind, some of those that contribute a lot and not a peep in this ... clarify for me: Who decides who is mentioned and what position does he have? And tell me, if it really only matters the money you have in the Linux Foundation?

Interesting to analyze who is involved in the development ... BSD, Indiana, one day I may have to migrate to you ...

    Great note Gaara !!

This encourages the use of linux for companies in the end there will be many more that are added, but the ideal would be that they will start to launch some other free code like nvidia that has 2 types of drivers: the free noveau and the closed code nvidia
