Ubuntu Netbook Remix: bye OO, hello Abiword & Gnumeric

While Open Office.org (OO) is a formidable office suite, it is a bit "heavy" for a netbook. This is the reason why it has been decided to remove OO from the Ubuntu netbook distribution known as Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

At first, there was talk of replacing OO with Google Docs, following the proposal made by Google when launching its ChromeOS operating system: all applications must be in the cloud. However, this brought several criticisms, not so much because of the idea of using the cloud or because Google Docs was not up to the task (whether we like it or not, it is really good software) ... deep down, many do not feel comfortable resting in the "clutches" of the new computer giant.

As an alternative, then, it was proposed to incorporate Gnumerica and Abiword to replace OO.

Ubuntu developer Rick Spencer made the following statement:

"I think we should try gnumeric and abiword and those who want to install some of the OO programs can do so if they want."

This is good news since Abiword, in addition to being a super-fast open source application, has very good compatibility with the most common formats of current word processors.
