Update Pack3 for LMDE available

Optimizing LMDE

For some time now, the developers of LMDE decided to maintain their own repositories based on Debian, in order to have greater control of the packages and launch a series of updates as they entered the official repositories of Debian Testing.

We talk about this topic in this post, and when the version of LMDE 201109 this came with it Update Pack 2 (Second Upgrade Package). Well, on the blog of Linux Mint the availability of the Update Pack 3, only for users of LMDE like is logic.

The changes that this update brings are:

  • A new branch of kernel 3.0.
  • The repositories of Security y Multimedia are now part of the repos of LMDE.

In order to enjoy this update we must put in our file: /etc/apt/sources.list the lines:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

And update using the Update Manager. As they say on the blog, if you see an update for the package mintupdate-debian must accept it and wait for the Update Manager restart automatically. This happens because the Update Manager it is updated before the other applications.

In addition, Update Manager has received some changes. I quote verbatim:

At the time of writing this blog post, the latest version of mintUpdate-debian was 1.0.4. From this version onwards, the update manager is able to see your APT sources and will tell you if they have been configured correctly.

In addition, about the update they tell us:

During the update you will be prompted for a couple of things. One of them is very important .. the new kernel will ask you where to install Grub. Response with the location of your current Grub menu (which on most systems is "/ dev / sda").

So you know, great news for users of LMDE. You can see the full entry in English at this link.

Hi. With the "latest" is it okay? Until now I was with incoming.
A quick question. When will gnome-shell start incoming?

    All the best

Well, if they say in the official announcement that these repositories work, then yes, Latest should be enough. I still don't know when Gnome-Shell will enter, but it seems to me that in Debian Testing (which are the repos that LMDE uses) these packages have not yet entered.

If the latest ones are the most updated but without being unstable I would put those

One question: I have the wezzy repos, but in these repos they say testing is the same? Should I leave the wezzy repos as they are or, on the contrary, remove them and place those of pack 3?

    Thanks for the timely reply.

Wheezy is now the current Testing branch, that is, they are the same. When Wheezy goes to Stable, then Testing will be the next version. It is recommended that you use the LMDE repositories from Update Pack 3 if you don't want to have bad experiences.

Thank you very much, this info must be considered by all LMDE users, it was already missing.

I've been using this distro for months now and it's going great, it's really good.

Agree it is clear that you have to add these repositories and update through the update manager but. . . What do we do with the repositories that come by default in the sources.list? Will we have to remove them previously, right?

      Welcome Kikilovem:
Obviously .. You just have to add the new LMDE Repositories.
