UTUTO is reborn from its ashes

Possibly some of you remember the UTUTO distribution, which sadly was discontinued in December 2013. It is not just another distribution, one of many that was born and disappeared shortly after due to the lack of users; UTUTO has an importance that other distributions lack, since it was the first to be recognized as totally free by the GNU Project. On the other hand, it had the privilege of being one of the first Live distributions, capable of being executed directly from a CD. Back in the early years of the millennium this was truly an advanced feature, happily possessed by almost all Linux distributions today.

We were surprised a few days ago when a message from the user community was published on the official UTUTO website informing about the initiative to "revive" this distribution, which seemed doomed to be forgotten. The message says the following:

Dear users, the UTUTO Project who developed the first worldwide distribution produced only with free software, after having announced the discontinuity of the maintenance of its distribution UTUTO XS Project; There was a movement of users who offered to continue with the project and take over the maintenance of the distribution. What fills us with pride; having created a small community but strong in its conviction to maintain a 100% free project.

The idea seems to be to make several changes in order to get:

  • a production model more in line with distributed knowledge.
  • a better communication channel.
  • greater openness to the community.
  • complete projects that were born in our last stage.
  • a friendlier interface.
  • better support.

We invite all of our readers to give UTUTO XS a try and to collaborate with the small but vibrant community of this distro.

On a personal note, I would love for UTUTO to finally be a lighter distribution (if I remember correctly the last UTUTO XS weighed more than 2GB) and with a more attractive and polished aesthetic, in line with what other similar projects have done, such as triskele.

How good! I always wanted to try it, but every time I downloaded it the .ISO image was corrupted; I'll try now to see what happens. Thanks for the info.

Something similar happened to me. See if I can prove it….

Yes, I always wanted to try it too, but the image is too large and my internet connection is very slow. Too bad there is no torrent copy.

look for what was in a torrent.

The problem is that there is no official torrent and the origin of it is not known (being a little paranoid in terms of security). The only way to check it I think is with the MD5 hash.

It is also very old and there are no seeds anymore; (

You could try aria2; It allows downloading from multiple servers (if the site supports it), parallel downloads etc, and if it is cut you can resume it without losing the download, in short it is a good alternative.

            Greetings.

    Hi, Pablo,
You got the post out of my hand !!!
For some time the UtutoXS mailing lists have been moving and it was agreed to launch the call. Let's hope that in the short time we can have a UtutoXS 2014.
As for what you propose to be lighter and more polished is what is about to begin to be implemented.
In a while we will have more news!
Greetings and those who can and want to join, we are waiting for you!

I'm going to download and test it. But that weighs so much to be a live, it throws me a little back

What good news, from my point of view it is one of the best distros that I have tried

Well, now only gnu is missing for the device and if ututo does it (or I, 10 years of programming later) there will be nothing left to say ñuuuuu!

One more proof that quantity is not quality, and the UTUTO community is proof of that.

    Congratulations, Ututo.

To be honest, the UI looked horrible, but I could never get to download it because the servers were going to 50 kb / s

How many memories, UTUTO was my first distro. The pride that gave me to use an OS, totally free and that it was made in my country. I hope this project continues and that more people join.
