Welcome Plasma Media Center, KDE multimedia center

The new good-news that the KDE team has for us is already circulating on the web: Plasma Media Center

Through kde.org We heard about this news, we no longer only have tablets with KDE but now we can enjoy thanks to KDE Plasma Media Center on other devices such as our TVs, Netbooks and Tablets, but the experience will be similar or 'uniform'.

Currently if we use a tablet with KDE the user experience, the way the system is shown (Active Plasma) is different from how we can see it on our computer (KDE) or how it would look on our Netbook (KDE Plasma Netbook), well… thanks to Plasma Media Center this might not be the case anymore, besides as I just said, KDE could be transferred to any device that supports it (like TVs).

Plasma Media Center it can be used to view pictures, music or videos. This multimedia content can be located locally on the computer, as well as can be accessed through the KDE's Desktop Search service. But it does not end here, the photos if they are located on Picasa or Flickr can still be displayed.

It has support for playlists (something logical and essential), and best of all, you can incorporate plugins / addons / extras that others want to program.

If you want to install it, you can see the steps that are discussed in sinny.in

Here is a sample video of Plasma Media Center in a Tablet:

In short, it is increasingly being shown that KDE is one of the most mature, serious and responsible OpenSource projects today.

It looks much better, xbmc, in terms of interface and of course this also has the advantage that it has thousands of plugins that allow you, for example, to watch anime from anime without flash, movies, etc.

I see it very poor in design, xbmc seems to me to be very more accomplished graphically.

Xbmc is a project with more time to mature, obviously it is now a more complete alternative 🙂

Yes, I know he's older, but it's like going out to compete on a smart TV with a 20-year-old TV… it's like it came out late, and ugly…
Maybe with a lot of work or a better community, but now as a «new» I don't see anything «tempting»

Well, this and the active plasma seem horrible to me ... and that I use KDE ...

Thanks for the information, it is always good to try alternatives .. likewise, as I installed it, I uninstalled it at the moment, it lacks a lot, the interface in grotesta 🙁

The lack of graphic designers is noticeable. Some time ago I proposed several icon themes (in my opinion this is a weak point in KDE), because the truth is that the default ones are a bit uncomfortable to look at, but I never got an answer.
I am one of those who believe that appearance plays a fundamental role on the desktop and / or any application interface

Did you send them to Kde-look.org?

    2.    pandev92 said

Well yes, they need designers or at least to be able to apply skins, because it looks horrible ahahha, it looks like a gnome-style program xd

The project is very nice but the interface needs to be improved

Well this is the first step, but I see it really well. Sure, it can't be compared to XBMC yet, but KDE has better and more tools every day ...

It looks like a copy-paste of Gwenview's full screen mode, lol. I haven't used KDE in a while, but I love the homogenization of the user experience with K applications.
