Who uses GNU / Linux?

Unique Wallpaper

Interesting article that I find in humans where a series of information is collected that tells us in which corners of the world it is used GNU / Linux. I confess that some cases I did not know about.

I am also surprised that Cuba is one of the main countries interested in GNU / Linux distributions. o_O

Let's see just a small but significant sample of the scope Linux has today with some examples of its use:

  1. Control systems de traffic: More and more cities in the world rely on GNU / Linux to manage their urban traffic control services. New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles are some of them.
  2. The submarine fleets nuclear power of the US Navy: America's nuclear submarines, some of the most advanced and deadly in the world, use a Red Hat-based distro to control all onboard systems. Can you imagine a BSOD at a depth of 500 meters? I too would have decided on Linux ...
  3. CERN: The largest and most expensive machine ever built by man, the Large Hadron Collider, uses GNU / Linux, as does all the dependencies of CERN. The results of the experiments are shared with the scientific community using a distributed network that is also based on GNU / Linux. CERN is the birthplace and primary use of Scientific Linux, a Red Hat-based distribution for the men and women of science.
  4. The Japanese bullet train: The most punctual railway system in the world relies on GNU / Linux to always arrive on time. Between Tokyo and Osaka, the two largest cities in Japan, a train runs every 3 minutes in each direction. Every year, the Shinkansen (Japanese name for the bullet train) carries more than 151 million passengers per year, at a maximum speed of 320 km / h.
  5. The New York and London Stock Exchanges: The NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) is the most active exchange on the planet, where more than 150 billion dollars in stocks and bonds are bought and sold every day. Its computing infrastructure runs under Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The LSE (London Stock Exchange) followed in the footsteps of the NYSE using Novell SUSE Enterprise Linux after its previous system based on Windows Server 2003 and .Net began to continuously collapse as it could not support the huge number of simultaneous transactions that were carried out on it. . The results of the migration were a stable system and much faster than all its competitors.
  6. The US Federal Aviation Administration: The FAA, for its acronym in English, is in charge of monitoring not only US air traffic, but also all other aeronautical support and administration activities. In 2006, they performed a full migration to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  7. Amazon: The world's largest online store not only uses GNU / Linux to manage its operations, but they have developed their own distro, Amazon Linux, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Amazon has also become a world leader in the field of cloud computing, with its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) platform that uses Linux-based Xen virtualization underneath.
  8. Google: Another network giant that has developed its own distro, Goobuntu, which is more than anything a skin that is applied on the latest LTS version of Ubuntu. Google uses GNU / Linux both on its terminals and on its servers. The latter run a specially modified and optimized version for your search engine and the rest of the services offered by the company.
  9. Facebook: Facebook entrusts the data of its more than 1.000 billion users to servers running on a modified version of CentOS 5.2. The (not so) strange thing is that all its hardware (Open Compute Platform) certifies it under Red Hat standards.
  10. Twitter: Twitter is a member of the Linux Foundation, its tens of thousands of servers run Linux and many other free technologies that they appreciate for the ability to modify them at will to better adapt them to their needs.
  11. Virgin America: North America's most popular low-cost airline uses an adapted version of Red Hat and Fedora for its inflight entertainment systems.
  12. Toyota: Toyota has been one of the last companies to become Gold Members of the Linux Foundation, showing all its support for the free and open software community. The new Toyota models use GNU / Linux to manage their entertainment and information systems. Administrative systems and corporate networks also rely on GNU / Linux to function.
  13. Drones: The United States Army has equipped a number of UAVs like the MQ - 1 Predator with GNU / Linux. The reason: The system they originally had (Windows XP) failed due to a virus in an MQ-9 Reaper, which is why the migration of several of these drones began. The Predator is used by the United States Air Force, the Royal Air Force of England and the Military Aeronautics of Italy. Although it is to fly over strategic points, it is possible to incorporate two Hellfire missiles, making this drone a lethal weapon.
  14. Mobile devices: We may carry it on our phone or tablets. For these there is a clear dominator in this area: Android. Based on the Linux kernel, created by Android Inc. and then bought in 2005 by Google, it has become one of the most important mobile operating systems today. Devices of all ranges such as Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia, HTC, Coby Kyros and many more use the operating system developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance, resulting in a wide range of devices and gadgets.
  15. The fbi: The FBI migrated to Linux in 2002 because it is a more secure system with the capacity to handle large amounts of data, it also uses Linux because it is easier to spy on other computers from this operating system and manage networks of confidential information.
  16. Wikipedia: The Wikimedia Foundation has always had its servers running Gnu / Linux-based operating systems, but in 2008 its servers went from being managed by RedHat and Fedora, to being managed by Ubuntu Server systems.
  17. 91% of the world's supercomputers: Of the 500 most powerful computers in the world 455 use operating systems of the GNU / Linux family.
  18. The White HouseAfter an attack attempt in 2012 by computers infected around the world with the Code Red worm, the White House website was moved to a host with better protection against DDoS attacks and they took the opportunity to migrate from their older Solaris OS to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  19. Bing (from Microsoft): It's weird, but it's true, the Bing browser has its servers running on Linux. Convince yourself: http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.bing.com
  20. Several countries use GNU / Linux in public administration and in the business sector: Worldwide, interest in Linux is greatest in India, Cuba and Russia, the Czech Republic and Indonesia. The first Western country to come out in this poll is Germany in 8th place. In the United States, the highest level of popularity is in the state of California and this is understandable, considering that it is the home of Silicon Valley, where the great Internet emporiums and the software industry in general are located. Let's see in which countries the XNUMX most common distributions are most popular:

Belen I imagine that they will refer to Belén Esteban, considered the princess of the town, and her only merit is to have gotten involved with a bullfighter and become pregnant… ..

          2.    eliotime3000 said

            @thanatos:

You already reminded me of that Belén, since in Peru she is known more than anything because the story was believed that a host of a show business program named Sofía Franco was messing with her husband and as a result she was very badly faced to the viewers in the face of such a scandal and at least here the fanaticism of the celebrity characters has already dropped a lot for this reason.

PS: If someone else who is Peruvian and is reading this, please do not confuse Belén Esteban with Belén Estévez who are completely two different women.

I do not know how they have made the list of countries but the interest is not very clarifying. In Spain GNU / Linux is used a lot (you just have to look at the traffic we generate).

It is so true and now there are many more things missing that use linux or some linux and certainly Cuba and Venezuela appear as the countries that most promote the use of free software in Latin America. for example Linux on mobile devices http://is.gd/qKJc9q

A very important sector is missing and where Linux is a veteran: the film industry.
Already in Titanic (1998) Linux computers were used to render the special effects (not to mention Avatar). Pixar and all the major production companies use Linux servers to process all the productions.
Interestingly, the only Autodesk program that is supported on Linux is Maya, which is for animation.

In the case of bing, it depends on how one looks for it, it goes to linux or windows server
If you search http://www.bing.com, use linux
    http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.bing.com
But if you search for bing.com, you magically go to Windows server
    http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=bing.com

    Does anyone know why?

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Because Microsoft uses Akamai precisely to speed up the loading of its Internet pages that are using Windows Server. What's more, the odd server has at least CentOS 6.4 to give its servers a hand.

  11.   ianpocks said

It is peculiar to me that Russia appears in all or almost all the lists of the top 5. It is understandable since it is a paid with many inhabitants, which I do not see China anywhere. WINDOWS supporting linux, hahaha.normal gates daughter uses it :)

    1.    thorzan said

That "countries with greater interest" will be by percentages, I do not think that the number of population has much to do with it. If it were by population, China with a "national" Ubuntu would be high on the charts.

  12.   Footnotes said

Take a good look at the Netcraft report. Microsoft does not use Linux on Bing. It is used by Akamai, which is a CDN that they have contracted. In fact, Microsoft is not the owner of the servers.

    A greeting.

    1.    thorzan said

Yes, but they "enjoy" using it, at least by default.

    2.    eliotime3000 said

But Microsoft also uses virtual machines (which is not exactly Xen, VMWare or Parallels) within those servers that, many times, when using Netcraft, it appears that it uses Windows Server 2003.

Anyway, if you use Linux, you use it (and also Apple on their servers).

    1.    José Miguel said

I think "need" and "intelligence" are the keys.

      Greetings.

      1.    DanielC said

I don't know what you mean by those adjectives.

Germany is the country where the most important Linux distros, and KDE, have been created. In addition, many government agencies and entire city councils have moved to Linux.

And in the case of the US, if you look at the list they put up, many of them from that country, their most important institutions (defense, intelligence, aerospace) are on Linux.

        1.    José Miguel said

In general, there are two reasons to use GNULinux.

The first is "need." The fact of being free influences in countries where the purchasing power is not good.

The second is "intelligence." GNU / Linux is a modern, current system that works very well. Therefore, it doesn't make much sense to pay for a proprietary system, having an option like GNU / Linux.

I hope the clarification is sufficient.

          Greetings.

    2.    vicky said

Do you consider the percentage of inhabitants with internet access there?

  16.   windowsero said

But all those examples are server side.

And what about the desktop in linux, ahh?
    LINUX PROBLEM?

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Ubuntu is one of the cases, in addition that the 1% of desktop users according to the "surveys" turns out to be a fraud, since the actual users themselves are not counted, but the PCs that come pre-installed with an operating system. Proof of this is in this article >> https://blog.desdelinux.net/debunking-the-1-percent-myth-traducido-al-espanol/

However, Linux has improved a lot on desktops since Ubuntu came to this world.

      1.    pandev92 said

Just remember that for mathematical reasons, 1% of the year 2004! = 1% of the year 2013, linux increases, the problem is that world computer users also increase.

        1.    eliotime3000 said

Yes, but in terms of mobile devices and / or PC's of marked obsolescence, many would already be with a Linux distro like Slackware, Debian with Xfce / Lxde and / or Arch with the previously mentioned GUI's.

there you. I suppose that since they will be less than two more years in power, they will not have time to put everything back on from the dictatorship, but if not, you already have it in education, compulsory religious education.

Yes, the rulers are facades, it is still not a fascist state but that does not mean that the majority are, and also of the opus.

I don't know willy toledo but if so much corrosive saliva makes reason and abc drool then something positive will have to be.

Cuba is not a leftist government either.

          1.    Alberto said

I do not understand you. Any repressive government by definition is not on the left. I know Cubans and they have no freedom. There are things that are very good in Cuba but others are not.
Those who rule are an economic and military caste, as anywhere else.

Obviously it would be necessary to verify to what extent the USA is better or worse than Cuba, but that is another question.

My point is that no dictatorship is really left.

            1.    msx said

Exactly, like the current government of Argentna, where there is a demagogic dictatorship disguised as the left - when in practice they are just as facos as the military with anyone who does not blindly and absolutely agree with their discourse.

    Hello linuxeros:
How strange, Venezuela and Argentina are not on the map ... why is it? Venezuela has a distro that distributes Canaima for PCs and netbooks (based on Debian) and a free software page from where you can download soft.
Argentina has a national plan of 3.500.000 Netbooks and almost 2.800.000 netbooks have already been delivered in schools. Argentina's distro is called Huayra (Based on Debian) which in Quechua language means "wind", in addition to a forum, and at Like Canaima a page on Facebook. You can also see the interest in installing Huayra on private PCs.

    1.    pedro said

I am Argentine, and I tell you that of the two distro you mention, I prefer canaima, it takes more time to develop. Ours huayra has a long way to go and also still has many bugs. 🙂 As for the netbook, it is a political move, the children in the schools of my country, they go around fooling around with the netbook and they don't learn anything, first you have to teach them to use their heads then they will see how to apply the knowledge in the machines. VERY BAD EDUCATIONAL POLICY IN ARGENTINA.

    2.    JUAN said

The national plan you are referring to is a shit, in Argentina we are making "donkeys" instead of people, that netbook plan is only to win votes, it is not used to educate.

      1.    juancuyo said

Well, PEDRO and JUAN, don't kill me che… .the issue is that if there are millions of Netbooks distributed, if the base is Debian, if we add to this that in Argentina since 2000 the Ututo distro has been developing, that the Via Libre Foundation is coming doing school and the Argentine Pirate Party is also involved in promoting GNU / Linux. It is sad to see that Argentina does not appear. I agree with you regarding the use of netbooks, on weekends even the square of my town where there is free wifi is full of netbooks… .. chatting. Are we Argentines lazy for the Linux learning curve….?

When migrating to a new version, dependencies may be corrupted, but it is expected that RHEL / CentOS will correct that tremendous bug they have.

  26.   alberto said

One thing is interest and then reality. The percentage in Cuba is lower than in other countries, although due to political ideology they should be more akin to GNU / Linux

  27.   pedro said

I gave up inux after a year looking for a distro and desktop according to what I needed, I never fulfilled my expectations, especially when it came to users and network printers. The best Debian distro, but like all the others, you always have to install complementary files so that everything works as you want, it is very tedious. I stay in windows 8, everything easy to configure. Hopefully, from now on someone makes a Linux distro with everything a user needs, without going around so much.

    1.    Mr Black said

It is not understood what you mean by "I never fulfill my expectations, especially with regard to users and network printers", user management? Network printers? SAMBA?
"Hopefully, from now on someone makes a linux distro with everything a user needs, without going around so much." It shows that you have not tried the easier distros like Ubuntu or Linux Mint, in windows you do not install codecs? Flash player? Java ?, You don't understand, seriously.

    2.    juancuyo said

I use a Dyne live CD: bolic a distro that has no more than 2 gigs and everything works, IceCat as a browser, Gimp, Inkspace, Cinelerra, I have problems with the audio because it uses JACK WHICH IS COMPLICATED AND MEDIUM PROFESSIONAL, it brings PGP, Tor, I'm learning little by little how to use it but it can't be installed, I'm going to opt for Debian or Open Suse. But the software is great and it doesn't give problems and I'm a total neophyte.

    3.    catuu said

Of course, in windows it is not tedious to have to install all those programs that are necessary for everything to work well, if the winzip, the daemon tools, the winamp, download the codecs, install adobe, java, the antivirus, the firewall , antispyware, new card drivers, .NET, and the myriad of malware out there for windows that forces you to reinstall at least once a year.

I stay in linux, all easy to configure with an apt-get. Hopefully, from here on someone make a windows distro with everything a user needs, without going around so much.

For this I recommend Mageia3 (it came out a couple of weeks ago), easy to install, easy to use, they emphasize stability and the end user, just like Mandrake / Mandriva did. Mageia is a fork of Mandrake / Mandriva and is 100% community. There will be other distros for end users, I recommend this one that is excellent.

I have another place where they occupy Linux and I saw it personally. I am from Concepción - Chile, and here there is a bus and parcel transport company called "buses Bio-bío", they still use Fedora with gnome 2.30 !!!! When I went to buy a ticket, I noticed that they used Fedora, and the sales and dispatch program was running from the terminal !!! and I couldn't bear to ask why they had that xd operating system ... the saleswoman told me that windows kept crashing all the time, and that they decided on a fedora because of cost and quality. I told her, I imagine that the computer system is working very well, to which she responded, it was a sudden change, they trained all the staff, but it was worth it because we knew another world, totally new, and the company is more that I agree with this program ... .. well, that would be my contribution .. xd

Well, at present several countries already use any Linux distro ... too bad here in Mexico, we are in the scourge ** regarding that issue, wherever you go you will find Windows, at school, on cyber, etc ... and no I know why, but sometimes the monotony is annoying, I for example every time I go to a cyber, I start a Live USB session with wifislax or backtrack ... and I take care of removing the keys from the cyber and incidentally killing the computer, on its mere Achilles heel. But hey, some will realize that Linux is 999 times better than M $ or even OS X, because Linux is the only system where you have at least 99.9% certainty that the system does what you really want it to do.

    Long live linux !!!

It's not for nothing, but CERN is FALSE! (Partly)

At CERN the staff mostly use windows (an overwhelming majority). It is true that the servers of different control, access and scientific calculation systems are linux. But windows are used on a daily basis, the most used and essential products are the complete office suite (including project) and sharepoint, if you bother to browse a little you will see that a large number of pages are made by users in sharepoint. I put aside the entire list of design software, CATIA, ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.

I say this knowingly, I work at CERN.

«Bing (from Microsoft): It's weird, but it's true, the Bing browser has its servers running on Linux. Convince yourself: http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.bing.com»

Please, Akamai is an external company, which has many clients because it has its servers distributed globally and that facilitates the protection of DDoS, since it uses Round Robin DNS on its servers, making attacks difficult.

Saying that Microsoft uses GNU / Linux is a sign that this is not the case, since you may have a GNU / Linux in front of your Microsoft Servers.

Saying that comment I find it difficult to believe many others for example:

"The FBI: The FBI migrated to Linux in 2002 because it is a more secure system with the capacity to handle large amounts of data, it also uses Linux because it is easier to spy on other computers from this operating system and manage networks of confidential information."

Another thing, using GNU / Linux to spy on other computers, amazing. The person who wrote the news has seen many hacker movies and I love GNU / Linux and UNIX, but it is to piss and not drop.

TO THE AUTHOR: Why should I be surprised that Cuba is in favor of Free Software in general and GNU / Linux in particular?

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Because we both live in Cuba and we are almost at the head of the national SWL community, we are aware that the Government does not do everything it can to support the SWL, even though, curiously, it affirms otherwise in many meetings or boards of directors.

It is not correct to say that Bing uses linux based on the page: http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.bing.com.

There the information comes from the servers of Akamai, which is the largest content distribution network (CDN). Bing uses Akamai, but the actual Bing servers are hidden behind that CDN. From what I've seen on the internet, the frontends are based on ASP.Net, probably on Windows.

But you can say that Akamai uses Linux, and therefore almost 20% of Internet traffic.

In Argentina, the PCs that the government gives to secondary school students bring a Linux distro that unfortunately most do not enter and the teachers have little or no knowledge of this system. If the pcs came only with linux it would save millions and the students would learn more.

That Cuba surprised by its high use of Gnu / Linux?
Well, it should not be surprising, since if they use proprietary programs or operating systems, how can they be sure that they do not contain a Trojan, backdoor or other type of computer bug to spy, steal information, destroy information, include information, etc and that they are made to antivirus and other security products do not detect them.
That is one of the many reasons why I use Gnu / Linux.

Gnu / Linux is also present in the Carrefour cash registers, I have also seen it in the AirBus A300-200 aircraft of the Avianca company, in the monitors that are found on the back of the passenger seats. I use Mageia3 on my laptop, I also have it installed on 2 more computers in the house, ah !!! also on an Android tablet, waiting for the FirefoxOS version to come out on tablets and / or Plasma Active (KDE) for tablets.

Regards. Here in Venezuela it is law that the public administration uses free software. In addition, the government equips children from first to seventh grade with a netbook called here "canaimita", which runs on a Debian-based GNU / Linux distribution called "Canaima GNU / Linux". Now, I don't know why Venezuela is not on those lists.

I would prefer that Ubuntu or Mint be implemented in Venezuela, because Debian is giving users many problems, both educational and advanced users, most of Debian dependencies are always obsolete so much so that the case is being presented that they are Formatting them and putting Windows 7 in them, if they knew everything new that Ubuntu brings, this change would not have so much impact, I am a programmer and I have been using Canaima 3.0 to 5.0 and I see a lot of decline with saying that version 3.1 is better than 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0, why? good because in versions 4.0 and 4.1 there is a serious bug that when you open many programs the panel menu and the window panels disappear every now and then to have to run "gnome-session" to restart everything! It is a Debian bug as such, now with version 5.0 it is the same Debian with the Cinnamon desktop and it is very heavy! it is not feasible to use such a desk to work it is annoying! unless they change it to Mate and really recommended! using Mint or Ubuntu itself.
