Why won't Adobe open the Flash code?

Adobe has been receiving harsh criticism lately, notably also that of Steve Jobs himself, because of its Flash platform. As part of your defense, on your blog Open at Adobe it is published an article where they try to explain why they can't open the Flash player code. And apparently the culprit would be an old acquaintance:

“The main reason we cannot Flash Player as Open Source is because there is technology in the player that is not ours, such as the industry standard high definition video codec, H.264. Adobe pays for that codec to make the video reliably play across the world, across multiple browsers and operating systems. So we make it as open as we can - releasing the specs. "

The Flash (SWF) file format specifications yes they are open, and theoretically anyone can make their own player, including Apple. Thanks to these specifications, there are free players, such as Gnash and swfdec.
