Why do we use Linux?

We tell people that we use Linux because it is safe. Or because it's free, because it's customizable, because it's free, because it has excellent community support ...

But this is all just bullshit marketing. We say that to non-Linuxers because they wouldn't understand the real reason. And because by saying those false reasons enough times, we start to convince ourselves.

But deep within us, the real reason remains.

We use Linux because it is fun.

It's fun to fix the system. It's fun to edit all the settings, break the system, then go into recovery mode to repair it. It's fun having over a hundred distros to choose from. It's fun to use the command line.

Let me say it again. It's fun to use the command line.

It's no wonder non-Linuxers don't get it.

The point of Linux users is that we use it for our own good. Sure, we like to get the job done.

Sure, we like to be safe from viruses. Sure, we like to save money.

But those are just side effects. What we really like is playing with the system, poking around it and discovering fascinating things about the software that lie beneath it.
