Windows 8: Microsoft will try to prevent dual boot with Linux

According to an article published by ITWorld, Microsoft will require that machines certified to use Windows 8 use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) for secure boot instead of using BIOS firmware.

Critics point out that Microsoft could get rid definitely from Linux in those equipment come with Windows pre-installed y UEFI enabled.

The idea of secure boot is to keep "secret keys" within the BIOS itself. These keys will be used to sign everything that is allowed to run, such as operating systems. In case the operating system we choose is not signed by an existing key, it will not be possible to start it. The same applies to drivers and other programs.

This technology is not new; Most of today's motherboards support Secure Boot, although this option is generally disabled by default. For the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft wants this option to be enabled by default on all devices that come with their operating system installed from the factory.

While the idea of secure boot is noble (avoiding the execution of malicious applications and systems), the problem comes when it comes to dealing with Linux. As we all know, there are many distributions available, and they do not necessarily have to be known, since each one can build their own distribution. Well, indeed, everything seems to indicate that Windows 8 could leave these distributions out, leaving Linux (or, in the best of cases, lesser-known distributions) and blocking their startup.

I very much doubt that they will succeed, and it seems fatal to me that they do not let the user choose, but hey, we already know how these from Microsoft are

They are going to be screwed, the ones who use Linux and had a separate partition for Linux because of games and things like that, when it comes to choosing they are going to stay with Linux ... so they are going to end up losing people who use their stinky windows.

Let's see. If it is in the BIOS we will simply have to do one more step within the configuration. Anyway, you have to enter to activate the start from cd / dvd or from a pendrive, etc. The problem would be that we do not have the option to disable startup, sure? salu2

Windows sucks, those who wish to have linux and are smart just build a computer. I'm sure that in the future a simple virtual machine will be able to mount the happy Windows 8.

The truth is not a big deal, if it is a configuration on the mother ... it is removed right? I remember before there were a series of ibm computers that you had to jumper the mother to protect the BIOS from being edited .. They are extra steps that put nothing else .. Also if it is as the article says the "lesser known" distros could reach suffer: OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, ArchLinux ... I don't think they will suffer ... nothing will happen to us ...

Why are you going to emulate an operating system that is a mosaic ???
I think the windows 8 interface is quite a joke, even if it is for tablets and all that shit, gnome 3 I think it has an advantage (and that everyone is fucking xD) and any linux window manager can be modified in a while to be much better.
I mean, we are talking about squares ... what did they do it with? with the paint ?? 😛 (yes, I know that paint is not programmed, but what do I know… maybe they put a plugin in the VB to make the graphical interface with paint: P)

And also in linux you can put one or another interface according to you have a tablet or a desktop computer, not like in linux you have to have both running at the same time and neither chicha nor lemonade

Precisely the problem would be that those manufacturers would be forced by Microsoft to not put an option to disable it, with which one would not be free to do what one wants with a computer that he paid for.
Yes, it is true that a desktop is any brave weapon, but the notebooks are assembled and with an OS pre-installed by the manufacturer, with which we would not only have to pay the "plus tax", but also we will not have the freedom to choose which software to run on OUR PCs.

First, they sell it to you as a "safe starter", for me it is another measure to strengthen their monopoly.

Second, "Critics point out that Microsoft could definitely get rid of Linux on those computers that come with Windows preinstalled and UEFI enabled.", I find it hasty ... time while it will not take long for a solution to this issue to emerge.

Third, I didn't buy myself an OEM Windows PC. (We are screwed with the notebook issue ... but refer to the second point)

Something like this ... But hopefully you only need to change an option in the bios to change it. That will depend on the hardware manufacturers.

It's hard to believe, but you'll have to be prepared. If true, it will be a good reason to recommend that the new Windows be rejected. These kinds of actions should be prohibited everywhere. I imagine that in the US this violates antitrust law.
