WPS Office Beta for LINUX.

WPS Office also know as KingSoft Office is a Chinese company that develops an office suite with an environment similar to that of MS Office. WPS Office is free but closed source. The Chinese company has decided to venture into GNU / Linux with their office suite.

So far the company provides a BETA version for GNU / Linux with 32-bit architecture, which can also be run on GNU / Linux With 64-bit architecture, it is available in Chinese and English.

I personally out of curiosity installed it to see what the environment of this suite was like on Linux Mint 14 with 64-bit architecture. Here is a video that I uploaded to Youtube, so you can see the environment of the BETA WPS Office.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewnO77fwxy4

Download WPS Office

Install WPS Office on Ubuntu or Linux Mint with 64-bit architecture

Once the WPS Office package is downloaded, we open the terminal and place.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

these libraries will allow us to run WPS Office in Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora y OpenSuse with 64-bit architecture. Then we install the program with GDebi manually.

Change the language from Chinese to English

We open the WPS Office and close it. Then we open the terminal and write:

cd / opt / kingsoft / wps-office / office6 / 2052
Then the following sentence:
sudo rm qt.qm wps.qm wpp.qm et.qm

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think it's good to know that GNU / Linux is going strong in Asia. WPS Office is closed source, but it is yet another future-oriented alternative for GNU / Linux users.

It is also good to see a competition to improve office suites in GNU / Linux. Of course my feeling will always be with free software, that is, LibreOffice, Calligra, AbiWord, etc. Well they can give their constructive opinions.

Well, I'm not sure if it could become a competition for the existing office suites in Gnu / linux, since for that it would have to be popular among users, but it is interesting to see that companies want to venture into Gnu / linux.

Well, I do not know if that of the popularity of the talk is worth for the comment of use ... If it is used in China, a few million who will use it ...

I tried it on windows and I must say that after the language trauma, it is a true clone of office 2010 (but you can put the buttons in 2003 style), and it works amazing, compatibility with docx, xlsx, and pptx very good

If only it were in Spanish ...

This software is "famous" on Android, so this can be your gateway.
I don't think it will eat the market, but maybe it will push it enough that LibreOffice does not rest on its laurels

I'll stick with the LibreOffice interface 😀

Looks great! If one day they release a language pack for Linux, in Spanish, I install it 🙂 and remove the libreoffice

I agree with you. What's more, I hope LibreOffice improves its compatibility with Office documents.

What do you mean by using LO dictionaries, that is, is it possible to download a dictionary to correct the Spanish texts ??

I use it on Android and it's tremendous, but I leave it there, I don't think I will install it on PC 🙂

it is one of the best alternatives on android, even better than my beloved quick office

  5.   Jesus Ballesteros said

In Archlinux you can find it in AUR as wpsforlinux, at least it seems to be an office 2007 clone, it will be time to test it in format compatibility to see how it is.

  6.   kennatj said

Oh it looks good to me I have never liked the way it looks openoffice / libreoffice although I don't think I will change it for google docs which is my favorite right now>.

  7.   KZKG ^ Gaara said

I really like that yes, but… closed source and Chinese software? WTF !! , no joke I use that.

    1.    Jesus Ballesteros said

I already made a little closer and I can assure you that Libreoffice is better than this, especially when it comes to format compatibility, it cannot even open OOXML formats, something Libreoffice does. What I do agree with is that Libreoffice will have to change its appearance, because it is good software.

Corel WordPerfect is the grandfather of Microsoft Word. WordPerfect became popular in the second half of the 80's, and in the early 90's, Microsoft Word outperformed it in compatibility with the primitive Windows desktop back then. From that moment on, Word and the rest of the Office suite were consolidated thanks to their then well-built interface compared to the old adequacy that the WordPerfect GUI meant.

        End of legend.

@Fenix, I don't know if you find out, but what Ubuntu plugins do is do a search in Amazon in a faster way than if you open the browser in a traditional way, and with the HUGE difference of a Spyware, these CAN BE DECIDED If you want to install it or not, that is, if you don't want anyone on Amazon to find "your terrible plan O to defeat the world" because you don't know where it is on your PC, then you just uninstall the happy lens and voila, the magic was done ...

In any case, I DO NOT USE CLOSED CODE SOFTWARE (of any kind), but if I were given a choice between one made in the USA and another in China (and I had no option) I would choose the one from the USA.

Are you going to say you don't use closed source software? I will mention some of basic use. MP3, RAR, FLASH PLAYER sound you or you don't use them?

About the software it is a great alternative for those who migrate from Windows to Ubuntu or want a free alternative in Windows, they will adapt quickly, I already like it and I will recommend it!

If we are going to talk about spyware, Google Chrome is the king and it is so popular, but since it is used, there is nothing to say.

The compatibility with .odt as it takes it? I say this because I had installed it on android and nothing.
By the way, does anyone know of any office automation application for android compatible with .odt etc.? the only thing I have found has been a reader, but without the possibility of editing

  19.   Ignacio said

It looks good, but for those of us who are used to working with the Libreoffice it will not be so comfortable. Although it is good news that the interface similarity may attract more people to the world of free software and eventually free. The bad thing that I see with WPS is that it does not support .odt or .odp 🙁

  20.   merlin the debianite said

Well, does anyone know how much ram it consumes? Because if it goes over 300 mb or even if it goes over 200 mb, it does have spyware, but if it isn't just a little program that does what it says and if it's not in Spanish I won't install it .

    Policies of my Vaio XD.

Although I think its interface is very cheeky, almost a clone of office 2007 and 2010.
Maybe if the interface were the same but more gtk type or simpler but always respecting the chip system, I would install it, and it is not because it is Chinese; in fact I have more distrust of the USA than the United States.

Yesterday a profile went to the LibreOffice wall on Google +, and I published this video.
A quilombo broke out on the wall. The guy was asking to change the user interface to LibreOffice.
    LibreOffice users called it TROLL.
I think they deleted their post.

For me it is good to see the opinions of the users of the GNU / Linux community.

Damn, what's the use of accepting an offimatic system if one cannot improve it, even when we will accept that they spy on us and make a system that they later sell at the expense of the voluntary codes that a hundred people made.

XDo not fall for it, Office beta for GNU / LINUX is nothing more than a hook to continue spying on what we do in the free world and then do something better in the private world.

Chinese application to make documents that mysteriously connects to the internet without being asked, 'white and bottled'

  25.   Diego said

It is very good, I say it because by installing the proprietary sources of MS the WPS could open all my word and powerpoint documents, since the latter never looked good in libreoffice. It reproduced all the effects, and having a familiar interface, in fact the same, I was able to create a very easy pptx that looked completely good in MS office, perfect to be able to use linux and send the work to a university colleague who hopefully knows that there is windows XP and 7
Regarding the origin, if we say that it is Chinese, we think that it is of poor quality, because in this case I have used it looking for the fault and I have not had problems or freezes or crashes of the program. I don't think the program spies, and even if it did, the pure fact of browsing with any other program on the internet does.
It remains to be polished for the West, since it shows that it is made for that culture, no more seeing its website and the home page that connects to the internet than if it can be deactivated, or even use a firewall in case of feeling watched.
We take out the format compatibility and the known (and editable) appearance as an advantage, and the language limitation as a disadvantage that I hope will be solved soon.

I just installed it on my PC but I have already been using it on android, as far as I am concerned it is a good option since as we all know, although we have free office suite in GNU / Linux, they do not present the same compatibility with documents created by Microsoft Office, and in my case that I have completely switched to using Ubuntu, I have difficulties when using some .docx and .pptx documents with LibreOffice.
I am not saying that this Program is perfect and that it can replace Microsoft, but evaluating its performance and time in this Operating System, I think it is the one that is closest.
I'm not an expert Ubuntu user so don't be insulted by this.

The sequel to Chavez left much more ignorance than what already existed in the third world, reading comments where they segment a product by its origin makes me ashamed. Point 1, KingSoft is not a Chinese government company. Point 2, MSOficce was developed by many people (including Chinese). Point 3, whether we have this software in Spanish will depend on how much we want to contribute as a community. (http://wps-community.org/download/)
