XBMC changes its name, it is now Kodi

Not to worry, the famous XBMC project is not dead, but it will no longer bear that name. The developers have opted for "Kodi Entertainment Center", which will begin to be used from version 14, which will be renamed Kodi 14, and not XBMC 14. There will be no further changes from the user's perspective, and the code will continue under GPL 2.0 license, but the name and logo will be a registered trademark, something similar to the policy applied by Mozilla.

The reasons for the change

Initially, the project was called Xbox Media Player, and then it changed to Xbox Media Center, as it was more than just a media player. Eventually, the name was shortened to XBMC, as it could run on a variety of hardware, not just Xbox anymore. However, today XBMC is barely compatible with Xbox, as it does not run on Xbox 360 or Xbox One at all. Additionally, developers could be subject to potential legal assault as they do not own the Xbox trademark. This explains why they decided to change the name. However, the developers did not explain where the new name comes from.

The details are still being polished, and the logo shown above may not be the final one, but the truth is that XBMC 13 will be the last version with that name.

The name change is interesting, since with the previous one they were exposed to a lawsuit for copyright.

That's right ... it is anecdotal news but it is relevant to know since it is one of the most important free software projects.

Actually the problem I think was that it made no sense to keep the name because initially this application was for the XBox.
