Xfce changes its numbering. Now it will be Xfce 4010 and not Xfce 4.10

They just announced in the Xfce blog the new release schedule for its next version and a change in its numbering, as indicated by the title of this article.

The change is due, from what I could understand, that some distributions could have conflicts with numbering and updates. In the end I do not understand why so much trouble, but let's see a practical example:

Let's say the package is released xfce4-panel-4.10 and in Debian later they release a version with corrections of said package, it would be for example: xfce4-panel-4.10-1. What is said in the post is that in general, the number that follows the decimal after the point is used for revision, so that 0 would indicate an update number, leaving then 4.1 which is less than 4.8.

Another example is the number of Kernel: 2.6.X. The X it is replaced with each new update. Thus, Xfce can't go to version 4.10, it would be like launching Xfce 4.1.0. The solution? Well then we will have Xfce 4010 (four thousand ten).. What do you think?

Final release has been delayed until after the end of the FOSDEMas new things could be added after the event discussions are over. The launch schedule is as follows:

Dates Phase / Deadline Everyone's Tasks Release Team Tasks Maintenance Tasks
2011-Feb-13 - 2012-Feb-12 development phase Support Xfce Supervise development, remind people of deadlines Hacking
2012-Feb-12 - 2012-April-01 release phase wait patiently Perform releases, remind people of deadlines Perform releases of own components if desired

Xfce 4010pre2 (String Freeze) Prepare release announcements, release Xfce 4010pre2 Make sure that strings in the latest development release or in master are good
2012-01-08
2012-March-25
Xfce 4010pre3 (Code Freeze) Prepare release announcements, release Xfce 4010pre3, create ELS branches Make sure the latest development release is in good shape, or that code is solid / finished in master
2012-01-15
2012-April-01
Xfce 4010 (Final Release) Celebrate Prepare release announcements, release Xfce 4010, branch for stable release, merge ELS branches into master Make sure to upload a new release of own components before this deadline

In short, we will have Xfce 4010 for 1 April 🙁

It seems wrong to me, why didn't you think about that before? If every version that is released has 1 decimal place, it means that 4.10 should be 5.0 which is logical. For what they are doing they should have used the nomenclature of 2 decimal places instead of 1; had it been so, version 4.1 would have been version 4.01 and so on until 4.10 or 4.99 if you want.

    regards

The problem is that they do not want to release Xfce under 5.0 because they do not want to give the impression that this version entails a significant change in its core. Example: from KDE3 to KDE4 or from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3.

They give the example of the Kernel, which was released to version 3.0 without great news.

I agree with you, for the same reason I mentioned that for what they wanted they had to use the nomenclature of two decimal places, so they can go up to 4.99 if they wanted.

What an excuse to change the number like that. I guess that keeps one from being upset because they moved the release date of the next version ONCE AGAIN.

Either way! To wait. Hopefully it's for the better. And that is not an innocent joke since it comes out on April 1st.

The delay makes sense. FOSDEM is an event where developers exchange ideas and many improvements can be included. I don't think there will be any more delays unless they implement something very necessary that needs to be tested well.

No way, we will keep waiting, these guys are becoming more and more like the GIMP team ¬¬. Hopefully it's worth the wait, the advances that have been seen show many interesting things.

It seems to me good that they do not rush to release an unfinished product (let's talk about Gnome-Shell, Unity and KDE4 at the time), and that they strive to give the best user experience, if that is the reason, I am willing to wait comfortably in XFCE 4.8. Now, regarding the numbering, it could well have been 410, at 4010 I find it a bit redundant.

Xfce is my default desktop, but it seems to me that this version is bullshit, 4.9.x should be respected, if 4.9.9 remains, go to 5, what a lot of history !. Hopefully they are not inspired by Firefox (of which I am also a fan but…), that with each little thing that is updated, +1 version is added, such as the abrupt step from version 4 to 5, from 5 to 6, etc, Coming to 10 which is in beta now. And well, programmer whims.

From other comments from Elav it seems that it is a fairly conservative team. They have to be in a very good moment, collecting many users who escape from gnome, and they will not want to lose those users with little-tested changes now. If so, and not due to lack of means or exaggerated fear, it seems to me a wise decision.
This Xfce user will wait, calmly and patiently for the launch.

I don't dislike the idea of renumbering. I agree with Elav's opinion and with the prudence that the development team is acting on. Other desktops have been wrong to rush and disappoint their users. The Xfce team does not pursue the desire to showcase new features or super features; their philosophy is to improve what they already have. And what we have, Xfce 4.8 is good, what hurry are we users for the next version to arrive? Finally, I applaud two things about the way the team acts: first, due to various circumstances, they delay the launch and take more time, no problem with that, maybe the result to be presented will be better; second, they have not neglected their audience, even with the delays, they are always showing their faces and keeping the news up to date on the blog. I am satisfied with satisfied with the Xfce I have, what about you?

I agree with you, I prefer something well polished from the beginning to patching on the way.
