ZaReason: computers for GNU / Linux users

When it comes to hardware manufacturers or "resellers" that specifically focus on launching their products with GNU / Linux we think of course in System76. Even, Dell and other renowned manufacturers have dared to launch some equipment with GNU / Linux, but it is almost always with Ubuntu as the only option.

ZaReason

That is why I was very pleased to find a manufacturer called ZaReason, although rather I think that what they do is only assemble computers, but that they have a unique quality: your equipment can be ordered with GNU / Linux or no OS. The distributions that can be installed by default are:

  • Ubuntu LTS 14.04
  • Ubuntu LTS 12.02
  • Linux Mint 16
  • OpenSUSE 13.1
  • Debian 7
  • Fedora 20
  • Kubuntu 14.04LTS
  • dubuntu 14.04
  • Others (which we specify in the customer notes)
  • No SO.

We can also choose if the Super key (the one with the Windows flag) comes with a Penguin or the Ubuntu logo 😀

What does ZaReason offer?

In the case of Laptops, there are 4 models: UltraLap 440, strata 7440, Verix 540 y Height 4335. Most can be configured with processors starting from a Core i3 until a Core i7 with Intel graphics or NVidia failing that, although as you can understand, they are not cheap computers, since the minimum price starts at $699.

For the desk, the range is a little more varied, being able to choose between the models: Winter 940, limbo 5880, Media Box 5440, Zetus, Valta X79i, limbo 6250a, Fortis Extreme 2, zini 1440 y inventory 2330, some of them with AMD processors and prices that start in the $449. These models range from All-in-One even compact computers.

How could it be otherwise ZaReason offers servers, Workstation and PC accessories such as keyboards, mice, mousepad, stickers, headphones, speakers, webcams, pen drives, external disks, monitors, stuffed animals, pullovers, books, laptop batteries, extension cords, power adapters, RAM memories, and more. As you can see, its extensive catalog is capable of meeting our most basic needs.

To tell the truth, that is how I would have liked netbooks like the HP Mini to be sold so as not to have to deal with the Realtek firmware, in addition to avoiding the bad taste of the Intel Atom.

I never had a problem with an HP Mini 110.

I installed elementary OS to my mother's HP mini 110, and it runs with everything, although initially I had problems with the video driver, I suppose hardware failures since the same thing happened in W7, an image misfit

Well, in my case, since I downloaded the Debian Netinstall directly from the Debian website (and not the version with firmware included), I spent some time investigating how to install said firmware for the WiFi and I just had to write:

        apt-get install firmware-realtek

Reboot, and voila: WiFi on my netbook.

The rest of the components of my netbook (HP Mini 110-3712la), he recognized them perfectly (webcam, keyboard, monitor, USB, etc).

And to enable the Synaptics touchpad «quick touch», in LinuxQuestions I found the solution that allowed me to enable said touchpad function.

Nothing beats the solar laptops that will come with Ubuntu and 3g / 4g LTE connectivity (they are also submersible).
It is the most daring in terms of connectivity that I have seen and only 400 dollars ... (of course, in Canada and the United States ... http://solaptop.com/en/products/laptops/

No then. Do not pass. For that case, I'd better buy a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with a touch screen (you strip it to two meters and it still works, plus it has carbon fiber on its cover and the chipset is 100% Intel).

Anyway, with Debian I feel more than comfortable than with Ubuntu when it comes to installing packages (I recommend that you time the time it takes for the Ubuntu APT with the Debian one, and that way you will find out who is the fastest).

Loses all portability, weighing 3 kilos!

      1.    gallux said

It is solar .. it does not matter how much it weighs if there is no current .. It is not useful.

I don't understand these kinds of devices .. Am I supposed to sit under the SUN, or near the SUN if I need to work and it has no charge? Also, it has to have an excellent outdoor screen 😀

      1.    gallux said

According to what I read, the solar panel is removable, and has an extension, which can be placed where there is sun, while the charge takes place. Now, I don't know how many meters it is.
Therefore you need to be close, but not too close.
And I agree, you need a good outdoor screen.
Anyway, I think it takes the prize for innovation.

I love toshiba, but this one does not get along with linux, I had to change it for a dell.

I think the same. I like them a lot, but I have had problems, especially with those that have ATI.

  4.   pandev92 said

The desktop ones are fine, the laptops instead look like coffee makers, what a horrible thing XD

    1.    eliotime3000 said

      Rather, waffle makers.

I'm still looking for a good keyboard that has a blessed Penguin on the "Super" key.

      1.    Raphael Mardechai said

Sure, I like it ... only that the penguin is on the other side of normal, and practically S /. 110 Nuevos Soles ($ 39), for a keyboard? around here a good keyboard (windows) is at $ 20.

        1.    eliotime3000 said

The keyboard of my Desktop PC is a white Genius with the Windows XP logo on the Super key that cost my brother US $ 9 (S / .27), and since he now has another PC, it lasted as long as a Microsoft keyboard of US $ 30 (S / .90 approx.).

          1.    Raphael Mardechai said

I have a black Micronics for $ 25, with the windows 7 super key, the poor thing is already more than a year old and is still very good, but I already want a new one ... I think I will have to accept one with Windows key, maximum I will pay $ 20 for a keyboard.

          2.    eliotime3000 said

The Genius keyboard that I have been using in good time remains the same as when I bought it. Anyway, things that happen.

          3.    Raphael Mardechai said

So it happens, for example my mouse is a Spartan ... Soon it will be 3 years old and it is still too well. It's a $ 5 Genius.

          4.    eliotime3000 said

My PS / 2 Mouse is a Cybertel and has been in use for about 7 years, and so far, it has not broken down at all.

          5.    Raphael Mardechai said

It means that mine has his 5 years of life left. xD

Thanks for sharing, I definitely need one of these computers.

In Chile you cannot sell equipment without OS, so without windows it is almost synonymous with freedos

    1.    gallux said

And for what reason? Is there a norm that regulates the sale of equipment that explicitly says that only hardware can not be sold?
If so, indicate it to me, because it is the first time that I read about the impossibility that is mentioned.

  8.   darkar said

but why only one type of laptop in particular and not from several distributors ???

  9.   CANNON said

I do not know if someone can explain to me, since I have never understood why it is assumed that the performance of ATI / AMD graphics always (or almost always) has left a lot of insistence on including them in computers with pre-installed linux, the ideal would be with NVIDIA (for those who want to play) or only with those that Intel gives you
