10 Reasons to Use Linux

Linux is for many people a somewhat complicated system to use, it can even be crossed out as something «strange“I think it is the environment in which we have been educated to blame, since we were young in schools they are teaching students on computers that use Windows (almost 95%) and from there we all get used to this system.

ubuntu

Some reasons why you should use a Linux distribution:

1. To be different. You are not obliged to be like everyone else, you do not have to be an ordinary person, just because half the world uses Windows you should not be one of them. So the first reason is to be able to stand out from others. Cool!

2. You can live without virus worries. Windows has always had this virus problem, and no wonder, I have had several times to format some of my computers because there was no more to do. On the other hand, linux does not exist this type of thing, there is no reason to have an antivirus, this is an advantage for us, such as less use of resources.

3. Many distributions. If we start to investigate, not only does Ubuntu exist, but there are a large number that you can test them little by little, perhaps not on your main computer, but on a secondary one, for the same reason as partitions.

4. You can try them without installing them. You can run a linux distribution without having to install it, unlike Windows, which is not possible. Running a distribution from a live cd or a USB stick is very simple.

5. You can manage the system from the command line. I know that this is not for everyone, but an advantage is that you can manage practically the entire system without having a graphical interface, you can install, uninstall programs from this mode, not only that, but you can do as many things as you have no idea .

6. The most popular browsers are available. Many of us like to synchronize our bookmarks, passwords between browsers, so for example we can install Chrome or Firefox and have all this data always available. The advantage is that it is not necessary to retype passwords, or try to remember a website, because everything will be in sync.

7. Many effects for windows. You do not have to choose between an effect or none as it is in Windows, in Linux we can find many effects for our windows, it is just a matter of doing a little research to be able to test them.

8. You don't have to buy a license. You do not have to pay 175 USD to acquire a license, you do not have to be looking for an activator if you do not have an original one. Here everything is free, at least the distributions directed for users and not for servers.

9. You can revive an old computer. If you have a computer with very few resources, it may no longer be able to run Windows 10, but instead you can find a distribution that the system requirements are very minimal, such as 512 of RAM.

10. Almost all basic use programs available. We can find almost all the programs for daily use, I mean a text editor, spreadsheets, image editing, browsers, among other tools that we usually use.

So far my post with the 10 reasons to use linuxThere are not only those that have been mentioned, there are many others. Personally, I have gotten used to using Ubuntu, every time a new version comes out I like to install it on my computer.

And although I do use Windows, when it comes to productivity I feel that I am more effective desde LinuxFor example, when I'm writing posts for my blog, I create several articles in a short time, but when I don't use it I feel like I get distracted more easily.

Yes, of course, I agree, working as a team and all that, but I do not agree that there are people from Ubuntu 15.04 who do not let me download programs, they argue (before adsl) anything. And yesterday they did not allow me to put a firewall or download or install it, they argued that my connection was bad, and yet I could go to google with firefox and put videos. Why are there linux people, who conspire and annoy others who use these distributions?
In a personal capacity, linux can be attacked and affected by viruses and malicious people.
I share the ideals of R. Stallman and also Linus Torvald, free software for everyone, voluntary contributions to promote Linux, all OK, but come on guys, there are people and people… Greetings. Yes, learning Linux costs is very diverse, but it means, GROWING… .G
    RILLO.

Well, they are not the super reasons to change the operating system, one of the problems is the compatibility with some applications of daily use such as libreoffice (or whatever) with the files of the microsoft office, or the psd files of photoshop to wanting to open in gimp or other software is obviously not the same.

Another point is that of the true games now there are more thanks to steam, but several of the titles that are there are boring or not so attractive. It is true that we can install wine but what a claw to install for a game or two just, in some cases for each game there is a version of wine. In my case, I have playOnlinux installed on my Ubuntu and with it I was able to install COD4, also Diablo III but I have that in elementaryOs. From steam I have Left4Dead and Dota.

If only these aspects could be covered, I think there will be more that would be transferred to gnu-linux.

To be productive, games are not required, and that companies design them for Windows does not mean that Windows is better, more optimal, robust and capable of supporting large loads of work or even better, supporting everything natively as Linux does. .

I think the same as the owner of the post, in Linux productivity is at another level.

About libreoffice and I relieved the thinking of many with WPS before Kingsoft Office, it is multiplatform and as I understand it (I can be wrong), Kingsoft as a company was born as a project of the government of China to have an office suite that could compete with Microsoft Office, in What is relevant here is that it works out of 10 and it really is much more beautiful than libreoffice

Each one of them has the system in which they feel comfortable, the one that makes them more productive, and the one that serves them the most. I have been with apple, with microsoft and gnu / linux and I have never felt more comfortable and more productive than with Windows. And in my humble opinion, the 10 reasons you give why we should use Linux is bullshit. I've never had a virus on windows, or any other security problems, linux is stable, but achieving it is a real nuisance and apple, well, more of the same. For me, Linux, the last two years was a real hell, I spent more time solving problems than working, with Windows these last two years has been a calm sea and Apple, well, always managed so that I could not do something . So what I said, each one of them is the system in which they feel comfortable.

11- That the system does not degrade over time, installing applications, fragmentation, etc.
12- What is the operating system that adapts to you and not the other way around.
13- That you almost forgot to restart ... not every time you install a driver, update, etc.

I'm sure I can think of quite a few more.

    1.    Gonzalo said

In the era of Windows XP there are 3 truths, today, both OS X and Microsoft comply with the 3.

Mii PC for games with Windows 10 since I installed it, I did not reinstall it, to adapt it to me I put a lot of third-party programs, as I do with Linux, or do you think that everything you install from repos is "from linux"?

      1.    Tiles said

It shows that you don't use Windows 10 much. It is not so common that it asks you to restart but now it is more annoying that the restart, it gives you at most 3 days to restart but if you only suspend the computer like me and leave it like that whole days without use, those days pass and when you want to use the equipment again you have to wait for it to finish installing. The system does degrade over time and even today, fragmentation is still a problem. If you use SSDs it does not feel and it becomes absurd to defragment.
One time I was in the middle of a Dota game and the shit was reset causing me to be counted as leaving the game and being sent to the low priority group. It really is hateful when that windows proposes it.

When I was a student one of the most important reasons was number "8", not having to pay licenses, even though where I studied Engineering I had an agreement with MS to give us Windows and MSOffice licenses, but the rest of the programs it was necessary to buy license or crack them.
But when using Linux there was no such problem, and as Daniel says, the system does not degrade, I still remember that after installing databases on computers with winXP, after a few weeks the system was slow and it was almost impossible to use , on the other hand Linux My notebook went running with Debian for about 4 years without problems.

    Reasons 1, 2, 6 and 7 who wrote them? A 12 year old boy?
"Use linux to be cool": really?
"In Linux there are no viruses": Completely false, the difference is the amount of malware that there is compared to other OS and to whom it is directed (mostly servers)
«The most popular browsers»: They are also available on MacOs and possibly Chrome Os and are definitely on Android (which in itself is Linux)
"Effects for windows" That what? There is a long way to go in the graphic section of the desktop! The effects are nice, but they don't make Linux a superior OS!

  8.   Raul diaz said

I promote the use of linux, and not everything is Ubuntu. I started with redhat and then I switched to opensuse which is very easy to use with its yast or the one-click install that solves all the dependencies that are many times why people see Linux only for geeks

  9.   Gonzalo Martinez said

1- I don't know what to say about that reason, really ...

2- Viruses are not like they were before, and many malware enter through the browser, Linux is not invulnerable to them, besides there are normal viruses, less but they exist. In addition, Windows Defender for all viruses that a reasonable person can receive (a reasonable person does not enter bajapeliculasgratisya.com)

3- The distributions over time I realized that it is a toy of the linux community, most of the serious software will work on Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian or SUSE, not on Soviet Heart Linux or Hello Kitty Linux.

4- That is not what to say, I never saw it as an advantage, also any OS can be tested in a VM.

5- In Mac OS X you can (since it is a UNIX, just like Linux), and in Windows you can also (I manage Windows servers, many things can be done from the console)

6- Popular browsers are available equally on all platforms, that's why they are popular.

7- Abusing the effects damages productivity and usability. The right measure is fine, the one with KDE by default, Windows or OS X, activating the jelly-like windows effect with 10 seconds of animation at first is good, then it bothers a lot.

8- As a Macintosh user, I have 4 OS X releases without paying anything at all.

9- My father has a Core 2 Duo PC with 2GB of Ram, it runs Windows 10 without drama. What's more, his previous PC was a P4 with 1GB of ram and Windows 7 worked perfectly for him.

10- Is this an advantage, or a necessity? Why use an OS that doesn't have basic software?

I worked in a newspaper in Uruguay as a systems administrator, and I had all the terminals with Linux. Really, what I can say is that it was the worst headache of my life. Fight with codecs, software versions that do not conflict with the graphic environment, maintain many functionalities through the console, and fight with hardware incompatibility, among other things.

Linux is a great system, for 10 years I used it as the main OS on my PCs, but it is not suitable for the basic user, nor will it ever be.

«His previous PC was a P4 with 1GB of ram and Windows 7 worked perfectly» I doubt it, windows 7 without a quad core and 4GB of ram cannot work perfectly, at most it can work like a windows xp with 128mb of ram (bad ) In the rest I coincide until Windows 8 I would have told you without a doubt linux is better but since the universal apps are, I do not change windows for anything on pc or tablet. Greetings 😉

I differ ... I have a netbook acer aspire one Atom microprocessor 1.6Ghz, 2Gb of Ram and there I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed and it works without problems and I use it with Office 2010 ..., for a while I used it together with Ubuntu and Windows 7 had better performance when watching videos in MP4 and MKV format.

We cannot say that it will never be, but positions like the one in this post make it not recognized that the usability of Linux on the desktop is broken.

As long as part of the community continues not to recognize that there is a problem, there will be no solutions.

It is appropriate for the basic user, not for everyone, but for a great majority. I have installed it for people in my environment who are basic and very happy users.

Windows 7 with a browser and 1 Gb of RAM won't budge. In fact, my girlfriend had a computer with 2gb of RAM with W7 and I ported it to lubuntu for that fact. Now your team is going much faster. Or does w7 consume 220Mb of RAM at idle?

Distributions are necessary to get your computer up and running without having to install software after installing the system: see the distros aimed at the blind, music creators, or security auditors.

You say that you have worked as a system administrator and have you never used a pendrive to start GNU / linux on a computer that cannot start windows or simply to check if it is a hardware error or to make a backup copy of a system that does not start ?

Effects to taste are a good thing. In windows or macOS you are restricted to what they offer you. And come on, the resources they consume are very low. I activated compiz on teams 12 years ago and they moved it decently.

You will have 4 macOS updates, but all computers less than 7 years old cannot be updated to the new version. In windows they still update ... But in GNU / linux you can use equipment from 15 years ago without major problems. who wins?

As you talk about viruses it seems that they have nothing to do with the intrinsic security of the OS. Or that GNU / linux has a security bug fix rate of 24 hours versus a month for Windows means nothing. Or that macOS are the first to fall in hacking contests is a coincidence ...
An antivirus does not detect even 70% of viruses. If you package a virus under another format, they won't even smell it. And do you recommend windows defender?

      1.    Gonzalo Martinez said

It is appropriate for the basic user until they say "I want to install X thing", or they buy a printer and there are no drivers.

I do not know how much Windows 7 consumes, since the 4GB barrier was passed, I stopped taking ram measurements, but without visual effects and without services to not use, for office automation, mail and some light page it works without problems.

I have used a pen drive a thousand times, as I have also used a hirens with the mini XP, it depends on what I need.

By the way, I have a macbook from 2008, which is not supported sierra, and I have it installed without any problem.

I can use linux on 15-year-old computers ... for what? What can you do with a 500mhz Pentium III today? They work but they are outdated by today's standards.

Linux a 24/7 fix rate? It is not so, there is a lot of mystique and myth in that part, if red hat, suse, or any company that works with free software finds it, yes, but if not, it is difficult for Pepe Nacho to find it at home, and it is not so fast to report it and come to light.

I recommend Windows Defender over the free ones. About packaging a virus under another format, well, I don't know how much experience you have, but antivirus doesn't look at the extension but at the content.

Using GNU / Linux to be "cool"? At least I don't feel "cool" or superior for using it, and I've had this since 1999 (with Slackware). I say that the best thing about using GNU / LInux is that it is free software, you can distribute it, copy it, improve it, and do whatever you want with it.

First time on a Linux website I see such good and honest comments, fair both towards other systems and self-critical towards Linux. Instead of the classic "herp derp linux is superior, mocosoft winbug $ e sucks, the opposite is false."

Regarding the reasons for the article, they did not seem bad, in fact they seemed honest.
It may sound silly, but this is really the reason for using Linux.
The classic "groundbreaking" reasons that paint Linux like SuperLinux and Windows as garbage are just myths, manipulation, lies, and ignorance.

Except for the reason for viruses, in which the article does not really lie, but it feels necessary to clarify (which is not that Linux is immune but that it is not yet a concern) due to how deeply rooted it is in linuxers to use that reason seasoned with such misinformation.

These 10 reasons give us the right to be Free and the way the world is it is something very important. I am a teacher and a computer scientist, on my server I have a Ubuntu server and a Debian Jessie, on the workstations a Debian Jessie, a Ubuntu Gnome, an Antix (low-resource computer) and two Laptops with Ubuntu Gnome. At school I am on the audiovisual committee and the computer committee, and I am as productive as my colleagues who work with mac and windows and all their proprietary programs.
Linux makes me feel free, strong, secure, productive ... everything I need to be good in my profession.

One of the reasons why I always recommend Linux is because everything you have of the operating system is completely legal, free and not pirated….
Someone said before that Windows Defender is not a good antivirus ... and let me say, you are absolutely right. I have seen computers with Windows 10 get infected until having to reinstall by opening an email with a .zip file. They talk about printer drivers ... I have seen a Windows 10 computer unable to install the driver for an HP printer that had the version for this operating system. Errors have all the systems, that is clear, but Linux today is more than enough for a common user and much more. What we should do is change the chip ... "Hacking does not mean that something is free." It is surprising to see people's faces when they tell you "install the latest Windows, Office and Photoshop", and you answer them ... The Windows 10 license is worth around € 150, Office 2016 is worth around € 140 in its basic version (in the one that you will not have Outlook ...) and Photoshop and I don't even say it because someone runs away .... On the other hand, I also know users who have bought a computer in I don't know what computer chain, because they are not stupid ... and it turns out that when they try to give them free after-sales support, they realize that they have been sneaked an antivirus for 50 €, when it is known that Windows 10 already has one integrated ... This is what is called pure ignorance of the user of what he is buying and as long as this does not change we will continue in the same ....

Dear Jose, I have also seen "atrocities and disasters" like the ones you explain, people from the start consent to everything to windows, they don't like Linux because they don't know it, free software the same ... In my school they don't accept open formats and free everything must be proprietary and of míster microsoft. We only have what we do at the level of our individual responsibility, it goes for 20 years that all my students learn and work with Linux and Free software; When the computer is hung from the digital board, there are many conspiratorial laughter and very sarcastic comments.

I have been a Linux user for not too long and I am relatively happy, but if there is something that I do not like about this operating system it is that many times there is no support for some modern hardware. I have had some problems such as that the RT8821ae network card has to be reset every two minutes. That is perhaps the most serious problem I have ever experienced. Lately it is also giving me some compiz problems with sales, I have to restart it and it works. But for the rest I am happy above all because Linux consumes much less resources when it comes to pulling the RAM, a problem that brought me upside down with Windows and the main reason for me to switch.

One of the things that Linux suffers from is that in your community, there are many fanboys who believe they possess the absolute truth (Linux = god, windows = poop) you have to be tolerant man, Linux does not lend itself to be learned by like windows, and this is partly due to the lack of knowledge of the system in the market despite its many benefits, in addition, proprietary software brands for windows have a greater presence in the industry for the simple fact of advertising, in I change free software, as it does not have so much publicity, it goes unnoticed, although many outperform the proprietary one.

On Window 7, I have it installed to play, my machine has a 1.1 GHz dual core processor and 2 gigabytes of Ram, and by adjusting the graphic quality I can play Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, and many more at an acceptable speed.

Linux makes everything easy and on top of it almost everything is free. It does not distract with updates every so often, you do not have to be defragmenting disk, nor cleaning ram. etc. In addition, although the internet is very low, the person who works from home is not harmed by low internet as happens with windows that consume resources like dog.
